I live near downtown Seattle, and I take the bus pretty much everywhere. Just about every time I am on the bus someone gets on with their dog. I don’t know if this happens a lot in other states, but I’ve been noticing lately that more and more people are riding public transportation with pets. I’m not talking about the people that use seeing eye dogs or other people that use animals for their physical disabilities. I have no problem with these people and their dogs, because they are trained and will not bark or bite at any given moment.
The ones I am talking about are the people that get on daily with their dogs and take up two seats on the bus or places their dog on the dirty ass floors underneath the seats. I’m sure their dog does not want to get on a stinky filthy bus with random strangers, or have to lie on the floor of the bus. Doesn’t sound like a good time to me. The last thing I want to do after a long day of work is stand because a dog is taking up an extra seat on the bus , or hear one barking on my ride home. I also don't want to be on a plane with one either.
I'm sorry but if people don't have car and can't afford to take their pet to the vet's office, then in my personal opinion I don't think you should own a pet. I suspect that most of these people that have their dogs on the bus (not in carriers mind you) are not taking their pets solely to get to vet appointments, but are taking Spot with them as they go run their daily errands. I saw this guy just the other day with groceries in one hand, and his bulldog on a leash in the other. I'm sure the bulldog would have rather walked instead of getting on the crowded bus with it's owner.
When I took a trip to Turkey a couple of years back I was on a rather smaller plane heading to the capitol from Milan, Italy and the woman sitting across from me had her dog in a carrier underneath her seat. I had read some guidelines that says if your pet is small enough that you can put your animal in it's carrier under your own seat, but I think it's horrible.
It's just another kind of public transportation where pets should not be allowed. I believe she had a Pomeranian and this thing just yapped and yapped the entire flight. I wasn't the only one annoyed on this 6am flight, and of course the damn thing finally shut up once it was time to descend into Turkey. "Thanks a lot lady!" I thought as we landed. There should be no rule that allows any pet on a plane where there are people aboard.
How do you feel about pets on public transportation, and do you live in a area where you see this often?

I think it's a pain, although I haven't seen it a lot near me so far. Plus what happens if you're allergic? I mean, they yap and make noise and then on top of all that you have an allergic reaction to them. Animals shouldn't be allowed on unless they're a trained service dog.
I don't agree. Just because I don't have a car doesn't mean I shouldn't have a pet. Not everyone who doesn't have a car can't afford one. And so what if I want to take my dog with me around town and the only way I can do that is the bus? As long as the dog is well-behaved and cleaned up after, there should be no problem.
I completely agree. My sister has severe pet allergies. For example, being in the same room as a bird will cause her to have an asthma attack on top of a full blown allergic reaction, including hives, and her throat closing up. Unless you have to travel far or need to take your pet to the vet, I see no reason why an animal needs to be on public transportation.
The only reason I have issue with people bringing their pets in public is I think it shows a lack of consideration for others who may have allergies. My bro is allergic to most animals and if there is an animal on a plane, who knows what could happen? He doesn't carry an EPI pen, his allergies aren't fatal, but it could still get really bad.
i just don't understand why someone feels the need to drag their pet around with them all day. unless you're taking it to the vet or walking it (in which case, why are you being lazy and riding the bus?), keep it at home. it's a living creature, not a stuffed animal.

@TheFifthHero@xanga - Mhm agreed.
@too_pretty_to_die@xanga - and what if they're making their way to the park? Or somebodies house for a doggie play date? Or what if they're going to drop the dog off with a friend for them to babysit for a few days while the owner goes on vacation? There are millions of reasons why somebody would bring their dog with them.
OP: I don't think its a big deal, as long as the dog is treated right and cleaned up after theres no problem. You don't like it? Tough shit.
I have a little 9 lb rat terrier. I am hoping to get him trained as a companion dog. He will wear the same vest and carry the same type trainer approved license that shows he has been trained for public work. However as much as I love the little dweeb I don't think I should inflict him on other people. We don't have a bus service here therefore it has not presented a problem when I want to take him, however, I agree that if it was ever necessary he should be trained or in a covered carrier.
I think it shouldn't be allowed more because it's a possible hazard. As you said, with a seeing eye dog (or such) you know the animal is trained and really, these people NEED them. But bringing your pets ... you don't know if those animals are friendly around people, let alone if they've had their shots or if they're clean.
@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - right. and there are a million reasons why they shouldn't. allergies, safety concerns, health and cleanliness, etc. all of those outweigh someone's desire to have a dog play date. get a taxi.
@too_pretty_to_die@xanga - Allergies....I have dog allergies but you don't see me complaining. I'm pretty sure nobody has died from sitting on a bus with a dog. Safety...well theres nothing that dog can do while its on a leash.....in a bag (if its small) under a seat....Health and cleanliness...like I said, if the owner picks up after the dog it shouldn't be a problem. Don't take the bus if you're so concerned...
I think your [collective] sense of entitlement is rather misplaced...but funny as hell! How about just issuing newborns with a "life script", so they know never to upset the sensibilities of people like you?
Get over yourselves. Smile. Live and let live. In fact - get a pet and take it on a bus (studies have shown that pet owners have lower stress levels).
You know you want to
