  • The One-Upper

You know him, there’s one of them in every crew. He’s the guy that sensationalizes his life so he can be a step ahead of you.  If you’re unfamiliar with the One-Upper, chances are you may be him.

Ah, the One-Upper...yep, he’s “that guy”. A person could be simply telling the story of how their day went and the tactical One-Upper will figure some way to include himself into the story.  Everyone notices it but they just continue on. Eventually he one-ups you so many times that you can’t continue with your story and allow him to take over.

The One-Upper will do anything to be the center of attention including, but not limited to saying the same exact thing you just finished saying and making it sound like your own thought. Kind of like Zach Galifianakis’ “Alan” character did in The Hangover

There are many types of One-Uppers but the worst one has to be the sports One-Upper. That is a brutal guy. He is the guy that knows it all. He will pound you with sports facts until you find a reason to leave. Women One-Uppers do exist but every woman tries to one up each other so that cancels that argument out.

Are you familiar with a one-upper in your group of friends?

I think I'm an unintentional, benevolent one-downer, and rarely a one-upper.  I have had so many different experiences -- especially absolutely horrible, depressing experiences -- in my life that I can usually "one-down" anyone's complaint.  But my life has been so diverse that I can relate to the majority of other people's lives, positive or negative.  I like to share my similar experiences, but I worry that people think I'm trying to out-stage them when I'm really not.  So now I keep much of it to myself.

I tend to stay away from and not socialize with the one uppers that happen upon my life as much as possible. The one upper likes drama and I hate drama. The one upper always has to be better and I can't stand it. I'll admit, there are times where I like to be the center of attention for something I'm passionate about, we all do now and then. But the one upper has to be better than you in every way and it starts to put you down after the 50th thing you do that the one upper has to be better in too. I don't choose to surround myself in that type of company.

Try dating a few of these guys.  So annoying and so much drama!  After a while, I just get up and leave b/c these people have to always be the better person in every conversation and every situation.  I value my free time and when I spend it socializing with people, I want it to be drama-free and relaxing, not a competition.  Competition is best saved for work.

@methodElevated@xanga - I know what you mean! Not that I've had bad experiences in life but that I share similar experiences and thoughts in order to show I can relate... but I feel like I do it so often that people might think I want to make everything about me, and so I try to shut up more now.

I'm a girl though! I think there are plenty of women one-uppers.

I knew a guy who didn't necessarily 'one-up' in the sense that he was trying to come off as 'better'... Just more interesting. I remember this person telling stories to other people about something we did together... And he'd always exagerrate the hell out of it to make it seem really extravagant and awesome. Sometimes he'd flat out lie about things in order to make it seem interesting. He was in fact a pathological liar and ended up lying about having a wife and kid.

One-uppers seem to have lots of issues, that's for sure.

Riding out from this publish I passed covering the Missouri River where by it joins
the Yellowstone near the Montana north face store. I recalled camping out together this confluence 1 year, only to awaken subsequent to an overnight rainstorm to get myself stuck in the quagmire of river bottom part gumbo.

my brother in law is a major one upper. everytime i say anything about sports or anything for that matter (especially video games) he has to put his 2 cents in and say he has done much better things than i have. sometimes when he gets going, just to piss him off i say "yeah well i knocked up your sister so its all good!!!" he then will usually storm off and stfu.
