  • Monopoly Gets A High-Tech Face Lift

I’m totally upset that my favorite board game of all time has been taken over by technology.  I feel that some things should be left alone, and Monopoly is one of them.  At the annual Toy Fair in New York City this week, a new version of the game called “Monopoly Live” was showcased. I’m sure you wondering why the heck it’s called Monopoly Live.  Well its because there is no cash, no cards, no dice. Instead you have a damn computer that issues orders out and keep track of the money for you.

Really? Is this really what the world is coming to? I definitely don’t want to play a game where the dice are rolled for me.  That’s one of the most enjoyable parts of the game, and I love reading the Community Chest and Chance cards. Technology is taking out all the fun! Thanks a lot Parker Brothers and Hasbro!

So to move ahead on the board you have to put your hands over your game piece and “Big Brother” (dubbed the nickname for the computer) will tell you how many spaces to move.  Oh, and if you move too many or not enough spaces on purpose or accident “Big Brother” will let you know.  Also there will be no side deals on the fly anymore because the freaking computer can detect that crap as well.  I guess I won’t be able to play with my house rule of putting money under the Free Parking space anymore. Players will buy and sell property by putting their hands over special decals, and will check how much money they have by inserting their ATM cards in the gaming tower.  Now that’s what I call FUN. NOT!

The new version of Monopoly is supposed to appeal to younger players who are used to the fast pace of the technological world that we live in, but I feel that this will hinder the youth. I remember when I was little and playing board games taught me how to count and add.  All that this new Monopoly is doing is teaching kids how to rely on some dumb computer, and not think for themselves.

The game will hit stores this fall for $50, and according to the New York Times the game Battleship will also be getting a high-tech makeover as well.

What do you think of this new Monopoly-Would you buy it?  Do you think Technology is going too far, and sucking the fun out of certain things?
