LOST: Should I Netflix It?

Okay everyone. Should I do it? I am debating whether or not to begin watching LOST on Netflix. Keep in mind, I have never seen a single episode and continue to hear some pretty amazing things about it. I also hear that as the show progresses it becomes mildly absurd and stupid (kind of like Heroes, which started strong but ended poorly). I NEED HELP!People tell me I would love this show. They say that my love of The Twilight Zone, Ray Bradbury, and Man v Wild make this show perfect for me specifically. They liken the program to a page turner suspense story, one where you can't pry the book from your engrossed fingers. My girlfriend told me that she and her sister were so entrenched in it that they watched LOST for close to 12 hours on Netflix.
The question is, do I really need that kind of a commitment?
Sure, the show may be great but what happens when it starts sucking? Will I get mad? Will watching hours and hours of episodes lead me to a dead end, a confusing and upsetting conclusion, a poorly written and oddly assembled gaggle of plot lines?
Furthermore, LOST was kind of a big deal. I never hopped on the bandwagon when it was popular, why should I do it now? I never watched Entourage or True Blood, but dammit did I love Dexter. Perhaps this will be my next Dexter. I remember watching Arrested Development on Hulu and kicking myself in the ass for not watching it while it was on TV. Perhaps this will be my Arrested Development.
For some reason I feel that I am being pulled towards this program. A strange intergalactic force wants me to dim the lights and watch this Gilligan's Island on crack cocaine. To be honest I am at a fork in the road. That is why I am leaving it up to you, the readers, to sway me in one direction or the other. Based on your comments I will or will not watch this show.
Ground Rules: Don't be a dick and spoil anything. I will hate you and your username will remain visible for everyone to make fun of and attack incessantly. Please, lets have some class.
Let the games begin: Should I watch LOST or not?

Lost is one of my favorite shows mostly because of the characters and how they developed throughout the show. Yeah, the mysteries and what not does get a lot of attention and that's good, but the journey these characters go through is what made me stick with it.
I just started watching the office yesterday on Netflix after never seeing an episode before. Once I am caught all the way up, lost is next on my list.
A friend of mine bought the first season on DVD and he made a drinking game out of it; basically you drink whenever:
- there's a flashback
- someone seemingly emerges out of nowhere
- someone seemingly disappears
- that black smoke thing appears
etc. etc.
There's more, but if you haven't seen the show I don't want to spoil it for you....! Needless to say, we got very drunk off that first disc and had to watch it multiple times. (so we could remember what happened)
I'm actually doing the exact same thing. Weird coincidence!@mccanarie@xanga -
Once you watch the first episode, you will end up watching all 6 seasons!!! That's what I did in June and could not sleep until all the episodes were complete. It's a great, great, FANTASTIC show -- with a few so-so episodes where you might be like "wtf just happened" but honestly, do it. What a great show. Sigh, I miss it.
I would definitely recommend it. I consider Lost to be one of the best shows of the past few years. There are many elements to it: the mystery of the island, the dynamics between the characters, and the inner demons that each character is dealing with. Even if you don't like one aspect, you can still enjoy the others.
I definitely disagree about the show becoming more absurd as time went on. It may have started dipping into absurdity in season 2 and did go a little overboard in season 3, but season 4 brought it out of it, and it consistently improved through the end. Comparing it to Heroes (which went downhill very soon and very quickly) is an exaggeration.
Many people complained that the show didn't answer enough questions or that it took too long to do so. Again, I disagree. The mystery is what keeps the show going, and if you reveal too much, you have no show. Some answers were revealed more subtlely than people expected. For example, the reason for the polar bears being on the island was revealed in season 3, but I heard a lot of people complaining about that mystery not being answered at the end of season 6. You have to pay attention to things and think about how they fit together. The show doesn't always just come out and say, "This is the answer," and even when answers are revealed, they're sometimes left up to interpretation.
Also, be aware that this show is a combination of science fiction and fantasy, and it has some spiritual undertones in addition to that. As a result, not everything has an explanation. I'm fine with that because I don't think that a show has to reveal everything about its mythology. I can accept that some fantasy aspects of a show are better left unexplained. I even know some people who think that it revealed too much!
Overall, I'd say its worth it. At least watch the first season. If you love it, you'll probably like the rest of the show. If you're ambivalent, it might not be worth your time. I think you'll probably get a lot out of it though.
Lost was a fun show. I liked how everything was written with a master plan, and how each season was like a new show because the focus changed. They had some great characters. Yeah, Jack and Kate grow old about ten minutes into the pilot, but Sawyer is great, and you'll get a kick out of how pathetic Locke is, from beginning to end. And Hurley. I swear, they could have written everyone else out and had the show be about just him, alone on the island, and it would have been great. Jorge Garcia FTW!
@Roadlesstaken@xanga - Yeah I just started watching it, the characters have me hooked. So far I think Sawyer/James is the man, I'm only up to season 2 though.
*Xanga's Batman Out*
Yes, you should totally watch it! I don't think you'd have anything to lose! Granted, I never finished the ENTIRE series...but when I watched the first couple seasons I'd be up until 2 in the morning so enthralled by it...and hey, you can quit watching at any time, too! The first few seasons are definitely worth it.
I liked it. To me it was like Prison Break in the sense that once you watch one episode, the way they leave you at the end of each episodes makes you HAVE TO watch the next one. It sucked for us who actually watched it cuz we'd HAVE TO wait a week before we could see what happened next. The only thing I didn't like about the series is that the ending left me feeling like I didn't get definite answers to all the questions that I wanted answered. That title was perfect for this show because every episode left you with questions that you needed to keep watching to have answered. Loved it. Definitely kept you coming back.
May lovely serial ! Waiting for new season !
I suggest going to a better series and there are better ones. I suggest Dexter to you, as a better recommendation. Or else you'll have to deal with many many more seasons of lost. Apparently, it gets repetitive and it doesn't have a good plot. Seriously. Some of the stuff is outlandish and made me laugh at it. And the ending of the show was fucking ridiculous. Some of the most bullshit finale writing I've ever seen. And I've seen some really bad some, but it's up to you. I wouldn't waste my time on this show. Especially knowing what happens at the ending of the show.
Do it.
OMG YOU HAVE TO! If you don't, you're definitely missing out on one of the greatest shows ever made. nuff said. :)
You should watch it, or atleast give season one a try. The cool part watching it now is that you wont have to wait a week between shows..
I think it was one the best shows of all time (6 feet under being a other noteworthy watch) the writers will suck you in with the complex world that is LOST. All I can say is watch the first two seasons close, there were more easter eggs hidden in thowes eppesodes than any other season's.
Also I 100% agree with Crono09@xanga Don't let other people tell you want to exspect abotu the show, watch it for yourself and if you enjoy the first season. Stock up the DVD's get ready to call in sick enjoy the Lost-a-thon.
I can't wait to hear what you think, I hope you share it with us.
john locke and time travel is the shit
Dexter is awesome and by far my most favorite show! As for Lost, I think you should watch it. I had absolutely no interest in it whatsoever and had heard people talk about it randomly, but then one day someone made a comment about wondering what the big secret with the island is and they can't wait for the season finale and right then I just had to watch it so I would be in on the secret. I watched seasons 1-5 on Netflix because I got into it a few months before the season 6 finale. Then I watched what had already been aired of season 6 on hulu and then finally got all the way caught up to the finale where I was able to watch on t.v.
YES!!
The earlier seasons are definitely better than the later ones, but overall it was a great series. The show is so full of mystery and the character journeys are incredible to watch.
Just be sure you have lots of time because this show does get addicting. Especially since you have the opportunity to watch episodes one right after another.
yesss! it's a really amazing show.
they did a great job ending the series - it's definitely worth it to watch it
Yes. You will have such an emotional attachment to it.
I watched lost then got into dexter! do it!
It's the only show I've ever fully committed to. It's worth it. I love that show.
Netflix the hell outa that!
I loved it, yeah it's super long, and some episodes can just go on forever.
But hey, it's good.
And if your someone like me, whos got a lot of time on my hands, and likes to watch movies, or t.v. series.
then lost is your show! :D
It really does have that feel of the Twilight Zone sometimes. It feels like a classic show in that respect.
