  • The New American Dream...

    Is THIS.

Apparently, rappers Gucci Mane and Wacka Flocka Flame are trying to prep a reality show. My disdain for both rappers put aside, I have OFFICIALLY given up on TV.

MTV and VH1 used to be music-based.  Now, they only play music videos from 1AM-5AM or during a countdown show like "Best of" or something.  All of the basic channels like Fox and NBC have also followed on the reality TV show train.  I understand the concept and intention of reality shows: to show reality.  However, they're not really as "real" as people think.  Most of the people on reality TV shows are recruited from modeling/acting websites!  A lot of people are shocked that a couple doesn't last when they were on a dating show, but guess what?  The competitors probably had no intention of romance - they just wanted exposure.  Behind the scenes, producers are instigating fights and spreading rumors because in REALITY, when you stick a whole bunch of regular people in a house together, 90% of the time they are doing absolutely nothing worth being on TV - dishes, cleaning, reading a book, sleeping. Real reality is kind of boring, huh?  I mean, would Snooki be as "interesting" if she didn't have her gimmick?  Think about it.

Quite frankly, I can list on one had the number of reality shows that I watch loyally:  America's Next Top Model, Cupcake Wars, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and So You Think You Can Dance. That's pretty much it.  Oh wait, I lied: Every now and then I will try to catch Undercover Boss.  Every so often I might catch a different show.

For example, I love to watch the auditions to American Idol's auditions.  They just want to make their own reality show.  Funny thing is, I was joking with a friend and he said, "Hell, I think I am going to put a camera in my house and make one. But once it gets to the competition stage, I don't bother.  I watched a couple episodes of 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, but the girls got on my nerves so I had to turn it off.  I don't care what Chilli wants, the real housewives of any city damn sure don't look like the real housewives that I know, and since when do sports groupies get the title of "wife"?  I saw one episode of "Basketball Wives" and I realized that only ONE of the women was actually a current wife, and ONE was a former wife...

I guess nowadays, everyone and anyone can make a reality show.  In the end, they're making more money than me, so kudos to them for getting their money!  But what happened to TALENT? I mean, it seems like people don't even want to become traditional actors/actresses any more!  I miss the days of television when they would come out with a TV show based on someone's imagination, or a collaboration of different imaginations, and have different concepts in each episode.  You know the whole thing about conflict resolution and plots and stuff?  I love kicking back at the end of the day and watching a TV show that makes me think or takes me to places that I couldn't ever have imagined.  They're just getting hard to find!  But I guess the whole point of TV nowadays is for people to veg out and NOT think?  I don't know.

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

I don't pay for tv anymore.  When I go to the gym and watch tv on the eliptical I remember why I don't pay for tv... it's all reality shows.

I was just talking to friends the other day about how bad TV is. As of today, I watch maybe 5 hours a month.

Off topic, we should go out for coffee sometime.
