Logic vs. Emotion: A Live Psychological Experiment

Up until December 3rd, 2010, I was operating under the belief that for the most part, the blindly angry gun-toting yahoo was all but extinct. As of that date I have been proven wrong.The individual in question is a middle aged former Marine that frequents my friend's Vintage Clothing shop. I had on occasion heard this man rant, but I never once believed his rap was legit. But, upon engaging this man in an attempt to probe what makes him so much the bad militant right wing stereotype, I found that the most simple conclusion was so obviously and sadly true: He is clearly just imbalanced and the military was his outlet to kill and quell his hatred justifiably.
Within 10 minutes of a two-hour battle of wits, he proceeded to speak of a deep-seeded desire to kill all Muslims. Why? because he was angry... Great outlet huh? Well this was to backwards a rhetoric for me to let pass, I had to probe. He made subtle illusions to a troubled past, but never quite got to what happened to make him hate so blindly. Simply that, after being in the "War on Terror" he only came out with a more strengthened resolve, but that wasn't the catalysis.
So now I'm left to push buttons to test for a reaction. So I begin a game of Devil's Advocate with him involving a hot button issue: The truth behind the official stance on the events of September 11th, 2001. Instantly, he became obstinate, upset, and angry. I had to see if he was one of those "old guard patriots" that just got all up-in-arms after the events of that day. At this point, he clearly lost any limited diplomatic skill he possessed and went behind the classic buzz line for all lemmings : "Do your research!". I then informed him that while he was so gleefully killing pedestrians in Baghdad, I was studying current events as part of my Social Science degree free of government sanctions. And that one that fails to question is truly blind.
At this point the conversation dissipated, but I came away with this as a general hypothesis:
1.) Ignorance favors the blind
2.) Hatred with free range to kill only breeds a worse kind of monster
3.) The best way to test conviction is a monotone voice (I maintained my cool thru-out, for several reason and chiefly because I didn't want to show to which end I was leaning in)
4.) That some people really are just pre-disposed to be a wort on the ass of any chance we as a society have to function in mutual understanding.Now, I know some of you might find this post a bit strange, but It did serve a purpose. I felt the need to debate this man because I wanted to see just how screwed up he was and how intelligent he was that he might actually have an intellect worth saving. This was partially morbid curiousity, but also a stand of sorts. I want every backward Conservative I come across to know that their agendas will always have opposition and that all the old money and ill-gotten gains won't always win them acceptance or elections. But as long as their are people like this fellow in the world, they will always have a support system as well. Also, I am by know means a pacifist, I just don't believe in needless violence. The amount of energy expended to attack someone should only be done if it is justified and anger is almost a commitment, so if one is prone to anger it should be about something worth getting angry over. Sad as that is to say, this is the world we live in. Until man casts off such mental bondage fools like this must be suffered.
Have you ever had a completely frustrating argument with a person like this?

There was a guy who I graduated high school with who had major anger issues & he ended up in the Marines.
I think our presidents/prime ministers should be required to be commanders in chief like kings of old (Hell, like Washington); we go to war, he/she goes to war, riding/walking at the front of his troops to lead them.
I wonder how many of these "wars" they wouldn't be so quick to start, knowing it would be their neck on the line?
EDIT: Anyway, more on topic... I don't like subjecting the direction of my country to someone's feelings... which is why when someone tells me "I feel that X should be this way", I tune them out, unless they have facts to back up their "feelings".
I think the biggest thing to note here is that feelings are fickle- one day you may like pickles, but does that mean that you should buy 100 jars of pickles, because you like them today? Logic by itself is subject to no such 'fickleness'.
@of_such_a_prodigious_paradox@xanga - Excellent Point Sir!
Very interesting. I would have loved to hear this conversation in full, lol. Too bad you didn't record it! :D
I absolutely love this post, and the way you write is addicting. I also concur.
I usually have completely frustrating argument with women.
I experience something similar every damn day, as a liberal/atheist/feminist living in rural Western Pennsylvania.
@Kelsicus@xanga - I think his writing sounds haughty and pretentious; it kind of sickens me.
His views on other people only seem to further propagate the stereotype that all liberals think they are the educated superior class and that conservatives are backwards-thinking retrogrades and conservatives think they are the only people who love and support the U.S. while liberals are godless atheists.
It really doesn't do much to promote mutual understanding.
Yes, I've had this argument. Made me ashamed to share DNA with the turd.
I've never had that argument, but I've had similar. Conspiracy theorists debating with out any true point that the government is a corporation. It was this same man that thought that tornadoes happened frequently with in the US because Canada and Mexico drive on the opposite side of the road, which some how creates some sort of cortex of energy. I couldn't help but let out a chuckle at that though.
Dude was either on drugs or a schizophrenic.
@Delmege@xanga - Exactly.
@Delmege@xanga - Well Lemme just address all your points outright homeboy:
1.) I m not pretentious, I'm simply stating my viewpoints and I have no preconception of myself as anything special...Jesus I work at an Airport for crying out loud, how can I be the least bit pompous.
2.) I am educated and I am not ashamed in the least of that fact.
3.) If Conservatives want to stop being viewed as backwards, perhaps they should stop presenting themselves as such..Hell they elected a man that might very well not have known he WAS the president until about 2003, good thing daddy stole the election for him in the first place.
4.) Mutual understanding is a 2-way street, and unfortunately, It's not on everyone's agenda, so why appeal to a non-existent conscious?
5.) You really didn't make a comment pertaining to anything I was talking about in this post, or say anything to discredit my views. More over, you probably only commented because you fit this stereotype I was describing....If you don't like it don't read it...
@SuperEvilPopTart64@xanga - The trifecta! Very nice! lol
@Bushy_Tailed@xanga - In truth, all the Truth Movement is really trying to do is get straight answers from the government, and with the flimsy attempts of the 9/11 commission aside, were left to draw most of these conclusions because nothing was put forth by the Bush Criminal Organization to discredit them. If the government stopped acting like it had something to hide, then these Conspiracy theories probably wouldn't exist.
This guy obviously has issues. Just try to keep in mind that not all conservatives are like him.
I live in the south, so yes. I encountered a man once, that my sister tried to set me up on a date with, and I noticed that he had a swastika tattoo on his arm. I tried not to pay attention. At some point that night he started spewing racist shit, and my sister "helpfully" tried to tell him to shut up because I had lots of friends of other races. I got called a lot of names, most of them along the lines of whore. I almost castrated him.
I've said this so many times. Emotions are entirely optional... nobody ever believes me, of course. Personally, I allow happiness, excitement and awe whilst prohibiting anger, sorrow, fear and love. It works just fine for me.
This is coming from an ex self-harmer, so I was a very woeful creature, but philosophy lifted me out of the human condition (To some extent, anyway) and poetry gave me an aspiration in life.
Xx
@Delmege@xanga - I completely understand how writing like these can be taken that way, but I'm too much of a realist to care I suppose. All he's doing is stating opinions based off of what he's observed. Not to mention that he attains his writer's voice throughout the entire thing, and it's really strong. Stuff like this is exactly what I do, I love observing people, it's so insanely interesting. I love analyzing things. That's exactly what he's doing. I could be wrong though, I don't know the author of this forum. Even still, it takes a lot to stop and actually consider more than one point of view. Not only for you, but for the writer as well. Not saying that either of you don't. And you might think of me as trying to be really light-footed and not hurt anybody's feelings or some stupid crap, but I'm just trying to make valid statements.
Besides that: it's really hard not to place a person under a stereotype if that person deliberately puts themselves in such a position. Don't blame one who's honest just because he places a stereotype to a person that acts like a stereotypical ignorant.
All. The. Time. With LoBornlyte, of course...
@mich_punk@xanga - umad
I'm one of thsoe people, but I bless everyone else with the same treatment. It's kind'of like when Manson just started gibberish during an interview. See, the thing is that logic is so easy, but it doesn't work in a lateral world. And, btw, emotions are extremely useful. This is coming from someone who has the wrong ones with a memory. Some people aren't tuned properly. And that's what happened to this poor fellow. He has a condition known as retard rage. His Hell is his heaven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnD4WZRn7aE
I like to set them off myself. I managed to get a bunch of military annonymous people crazy. I just said that the military will destroy your life. I was lying. My life has always been toast. Instead of attacking my character to make me Jesus, they should say that they have better things to do than listen to someone who left and obviously couldn't handle it. They need better lines.
I've been demoralized so many times in my life that I was very close to the human condition in its most basic form, which is what makes us all "strong" or abusive -- you take your pick. I hate it. In fact, this has happened so many times that nobody can expect morals from me, so stop trying. I will help hide the bodies, and I'm lying because I have no truth of mine. It gets really complicated and it's caste dependent, call it class. I also have no pride. As well as, most of the time, I fluff and puff to avoid social situations because I know them all. That's all I've been doing for 23 years. Dont' call me autistic. It's why I hate fiction because it isn't real. I want to recover enough from the last savior to write a book. I'm going to make everyone explode.
a lot of military people are demons under Satan. That was one of my delusions, and I believe it. The corrupted innocent, who are left bodies, who take form as children.
and besides, you are just claiming worth from his state. Most of the time, you have to agree with difficult people after giving them a line to throw back at you. Then you're like fake friends. Everyone has to love them after all. Otherwise, your not pleased face with cause them to harm of them and themselves.
Just say something like, "people are crazy, think all sorts of shit that isn't so." This might cause him to develop a little understanding.
And you're just another fat, white American worker. Now you'll try to prove that it's him when he's clearly incompetent. People try that shit with me, but I'm like trapped 12. I'm a fairly competent 12 year old though.
I'm sure that the guy you were arguing with was extreme, but way to come off as a pretentious pr*ck. Maybe you should get off your high horse - just because you were lucky enough to be able to pursue a degree does not make you some kind of logic-god. Get a life.
@Kelsicus@xanga - There is absolutely nothing wrong with being light-footed and trying not to hurt peoples' feelings. I think its an incredible trait to have. I really appreciated your view and your opinion. Based on his reaction to my comment, however, I would have to entirely disagree with your assessment of his motivation. I respect your perspective, not his approach.
@mich_punk@xanga - No, you truly are pretentious. Also, I did, in fact, comment on your post. No, I did not "attempt" to discredit it, agreed; please notice I never once said I disagreed. However, there is a wrong way to express your opinions if you're going for "mutual understanding".
If you're not going for "mutual understanding" because its a "two-way street" and you feel no one's reciprocating, then shut the fuck up about mutual understanding and don't use it in your argument against other people.
