Tech Tuesday: Get Ready for Super Wi-fi

This is a guest post from Just A Guy Thing.
As technology continues to evolve, it's natural that people would expect more and more from it. And we sure do. We've gone from dial-up to DSL to W-fi to 3G, and we still want more. Fortunately for us, engineers and researchers keep feeding us newer and newer technology, especially when it comes to Wi-fi. Anyone with a laptop knows that Wi-fi's range restriction can put a pretty big damper on any activity you get going, but all that could change fairly soon.
Our friends at the FCC have recently reallocated a significant number of frequency bandwidths for public consumption, many of which have been repurposed and designated as "super wi-fi" bandwidths. What does this mean? It means that a single router can ride the waves to cover a neighborhood or campus, rather than just a house or apartment. It means that you will probably not have a router if you sign up for internet service 12 months from now. It also means that your phones can operate on wi-fi networks as you walk down the street. All good things.
And that might not even be the best part. Per this article in Slate, tech firms are still trying to figure out how to best use some of the frequencies that have been released. A few years back when the government did it, the newly unprotected bandwidths brought us Bluetooth and Wi-fi. Imagine what they'll be able to do on the scale of thousands of time that size. Yeah, I can't imagine anything either. Guess we'll leave it to the scientists.

yay more radiation!
Of course, most of the bandwidth will be taken up by people downloading random crap and playing bandwidth intensive games. Kinda like me? Haha...
The idea that phones can operate on wi-fi networks as you walk down the
street makes me feel really excited. Yay for super wifi!
