Rock Band > Guitar Hero
Last year Activision, the evil, soul stealing, franchise ruining company that it is, released so many Guitar Hero games that I lost count. Metallica, Van Halen, GH 5, World Tour, Smash Hits, Band Hero, and the list goes on. EA, a slightly less evil publisher, released Beatles Rock Band which was amazing, and Green Day Rock Band, which was, well, meh. But bottom line, Rock Band is better than Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero will always have a special place in my heart. It came first and started this crazy wave of rhythm games. However first doesn’t always mean best, just look at the Batman movie franchise, the Uncharted game franchise, or the Spears family (okay one is just as bad as the other so bad example). In my eyes Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock will always be the best. Maybe because it was the first one for the next gen consoles, or maybe its just because it was the first one I bought on my own dime, but it was without a doubt the best of the series. Legends of Rock had almost perfect game play and an awesome list of tracks. I literally would sit up till 3 a.m. saying, “just one more, just one more”. I still start to sweat when I hear the intro to Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia” or “Through the Fire and the Flames”.
My friends and I were GH crazed, but then in my senior year something miraculous happened: Rock Band came out. I went to about ten different stores to find it but with no luck. After a week I finally found the last one at Costco and brought my $300 baby home. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. Drums, guitar, singing (which I suck at), and bass. Yeah so the RB guitar wasn’t great, I had about ten Guitar Hero ones lying around anyway, so who cares?
Other than Halo 2 and The Two Towers, I probably spent more time playing Rock Band than any other game I have ever owned. And every week there were new songs to download, some were admittedly questionable, but for the most part they were awesome additions. I knew I was addicted when I realized I could Medium sing and Expert guitar Coheed and Cambria’s “Welcome Home” at the same time and still five star it.
And you know the best part about it? I kind of suck at music games. I was always the worst of my friends, but I really didn’t care and I got better and better as I played.
When I got to college Rock Band 2 came out and my suite mates and I bonded around it, and got in trouble over it. Drunken Rock Band should be a collegiate sport.
Now this year Rock Band 3, in addition to 50+ new songs, better graphics, and more customization, is adding a keyboard and a more true to life guitar. Plus Pro mode which teaches you the basics of the REAL instruments.
I feel like this has turned to a Rock Band praise-fest so let me make a few comments about Guitar Hero. It had its time, but now the newer, better, stronger generation has moved past it. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (the only one to be released this year by some miracle) sucks. Just don’t even bother playing it, save the money and get Rock Band 3. The bastardization of one of my favorite franchises can only end with Guitar Hero going away. Far, far away. That’s just my opinion, take it or leave it, or better yet leave yours in a comment below.
What's your favorite rhythm game?

Guitar Hero & Rock Band RULE!!! I had Sony design my own guitar for me. I wish I could post a pic
I love me some Rock Band. <3 I've never owned GH, but my friend has it and I love it too. Rock Band is better, though. I love the drums. x] I'm good at singing a select few songs... haha.
RB3 sounds amazing.
as a guitar player I have to say rock band has taken it to the next level.
How about neither? DDR!
I prefer Rock Band over GH any day, yet i still buy all the Guitar Hero games, though 2 of my favorite bands are The Beatles and Green Day.
My favorite rhythm game would have to be the one that lets me play my favorite song, and then lets me jam along with my actual guitar... so I'm guessing... Winamp...? :P
ooooh, drunken rock band.
i could get behind that.
:/ Alright time for a heads up
Guitar Hero came first, yeah. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 was made by... the people who are now making the Rock Band series! Maybe that's why you can notice the huge decline with 4, 5 and 6. 3 WAS made by activision, but it was definately the closest to emulating GH1 and 2, and it was really good at that. But for some reason... Guitar Hero games ALWAYS feel... sloppy. Like they aren't ever properly calibrated. The game is uglier too. I dunno, if you just said one game over the other, and people would be like, "Aren't they the same game?" only people who actually play the game can say, "Well, no, they aren't." Guitar Hero actually has worse gameplay, which is hard to believe.
Rock Band has better DLC, better production, a lot better character customization, and just a group of people behind it who seem to genuinely LOVE music, as their tracks better emulate how songs are actually, "Played," even if it's on a fake guitar. Which of course, as mentioned, is going to change in Rock Band 3 when, "Real guitars," essentially come into play. But I'm more excited about pro-mode keyboard.
Even taking into account that both entries tried to create a kid friendly title; Band Hero and Lego Rock Band, Lego Rock Band has surprisingly great production value, as opposed to Band Hero.
So yeah. I love Rock Band.
EDIT: So since I had in my introductory paragraph talking about Guitar Hero 1 and 2 being made by the people who made Rock Band, whenever I talk about Guitar Hero as a whole, I really just mean 4 5 and 6. Which is cool since when I talk about Rock Band, I am talking about 1, 2 and 3, and not really Lego [except when SPEFICIALLY talking about Lego XD], Beatles or Green Day.
I think RockBand is more fun, yes.
