  • Top 5 Most Badass Shows on Television

I was at my girlfriend’s house this weekend to spend some quality time with her. Which I’m happy to say I did. But at one point, she and her sister started talking about their favorite TV shows.

The Bachelorette, Pretty Little Liars, and The Real Housewives of New Jersey were some of the highlights.

This got me to thinking: How did we get here as men? Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind watching these kinds of shows with my girlfriend. Hell, in the past two weeks, I’ve watched The Notebook and One Tree Hill, and I’m man enough to admit I didn’t hate either of them.

But now is the time for action. We must unite as men and take back the TV! For every time we have to watch 45-year-old cougars call each other bitches, we should be allowed some time for badassery. To help us do that, I’ve put together a list of what I think are the five most badass shows of this decade.

    1) The Wire: Words cannot express how truly badass this show was. It ran for five seasons on HBO, and each episode was dripping with action, violence, sex and cursing. It was pure, unadulterated awesomeness.

But it wasn’t just gratuitous shooting and screwing. The dialogue was unbelievably well-written, the characters were deep and complex, and each scene was crucial to the overall story. If you want badass, start with The Wire.

    2) Supernatural: A cult favorite on the CW, Supernatural is a show that was made for men. The first season involves the two main characters, a pair of brothers who hunt monsters, searching for their missing father. But the show evolves from there into an apocalyptic showdown between good and evil.

And all the while, the show features a classic 1967 Chevy Impala, a badass classic rock soundtrack, and lots and lots of monsters getting shot in the face.

    3) House: While technically not “badass,” this show is just damn good. The show revolves around the title character, a doctor at a hospital in New Jersey who has a gift for diagnosing difficult cases. The real strength of the show, though, is in the characters, which are as deep and complex as any on television.

It can be formulaic (House gets case, House tries to solve case for 50 minutes, House solves case in the last five minutes), but it’s worth it to watch the miserable doctor manipulate and outsmart every person and disease in his path.

    4) Breaking Bad: This AMC gem has been running for three seasons, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The show follows Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and decides to start selling drugs to earn money to support his family.

The show leans on the performance of Bryan Cranston (also known as the dad from Malcolm in the Middle), who delivers knockout performances in every episode. This show definitely belongs on every man’s must-watch list.

    5) Dexter: This has quickly become one of the most popular original programs on the Showtime network, and rightfully so. The titular character is a serial killer with a conscience who takes the law into his own hands and ends the lives of murderers, rapists and other less honorable members of society.

The twists and turns this show takes, combined with the masterfully directed scenes in which Dexter takes his victims into his killing room and psychologically intimidates them before he delivers the final blow, make this one of the coolest shows on television.

Are these shows the peak of testosterone-fueled badassery? Or are there others you think are worthy of making the list?
