The Irony of the Mustache

It's a everywhere. It's on wallets, it's on coffee mugs, it's on t-shirts, and you can even buy a fake one on the internet. The omnipresence of it is simply ridiculous and can even be touted as a popular culture icon of this generation. No, it's not Lady Gaga. It's the mustache.
Why is a certain style of facial hair receiving such unwarranted adulation? Mustaches enjoyed their popularity during the Victorian period and ended its run in the Seventies as did the phenomenon of free love. When the mustache revival came about in the mid-2000s, it was an odd trend indeed. Unlike the beard, it takes great care to grow a proper mustache. Having gone relatively free of upper-lip hair in the past two decades (save for the occasional sex-offender and unfashionable uncle), the mustache is a jarring look to say the least.
But that might be the very reason for its unexpected return. I wholeheartedly believe that the young people of this generation (born between 1980 and early 1990s) lack sincerity. With the plethora of camera phones, web cams, twitter, and Facebook albums, whose sole existence is to reveal as much about us to as large of an audience as possible, it is only expected that we have grown to be more self-aware than ever. With self-awareness, sincerity is often scrutinized and the prolonged study of the self can extend to a kind of self-embarrassment. So there awaits irony in all its non-judgmental glory.
But why does the mustache triumph over all the ironic styles of yesteryear? Is it the costume-y aspect? Is it because profit can be made from the accessories associated with the mustache, namely mustache combs? Or has the mustache, unbeknownst to its many fans, finally fallen out of the inner circle of irony into the same mundane trappings of khaki pants and navy blazers?
Do you have a mustache? Is it an ironic one?

well, i think you are forgetting some crucial things. for one, the mustache trend didn't just die off between the 1700s and the mid 2000s. What about burt reynolds? frank zappa? the beatles? charlie chaplin and oliver hardy? there was a huge boom in the mustache in the 70s, and also in the twenties and thirties. Granted, hitler ruined the toothbrush(or more commonly known today as the hitler mustache), but that was a very widely popular mustache at the time.
@BlackJester37@xanga - Actually Hitler wanted his to be a big hit..(ha pun) But it didn't succeed and nazis were afraid to be caught up in imitating him and getting shot down for it so it was a fail. ..
And eww, I don't like the mustache on many people. I do like its look on tall fit guys that have it well trimmed and the guy is a handsome bald guy..
Anyways, I think it's hilarious that someone will tattoo it on their finger and put it up to their nose in times needy of laughter..
My boyfriend has a mustache. It's cute and looks good on him. I'm not going to go all anti-stache just because some people ruin it by making their facial hair look ridiculous. I'm all for mustaches when they're done correctly (like my boyfriend's). If you were to meet him you probably wouldn't even remember that he has one because it blends so seamlessly into his face. That's how men's facial hair should be: NON-obtrusive, not gaudy and ridiculous like those stupid fuckers.
:)
I prefer to be clean shaven. My hair, however, is another story.
Fuck hipsters.
(save for the occasional sex-offender and unfashionable uncle) ---> lol
@z_stands_for@xanga - hitler or not, the thing was, it was a tremendously popular mustache at the time. and i'm not trying to say whether you like it or not on people, i'm saying it was popular again in the 20s and the 70s. yes different staches, but still a mustache.
@BlackJester37@xanga - I think that it would make me laugh really hard inside if I were to see someone with one like that today. I would definitely think of Hitler the instant I would see it.
@thedommediaries@xanga - That's what I'm talking about! I hate to say that I hate staches but it's the ones that have gross stuff trapped in em that ruin it for me. The way that you describe your boyfriend's makes me imagine that I could kiss him without worrying. haha Okay, I meant without getting my ass kicked by you first! hahaha My daddy had a stache all of my years growing up. I hated it. And I didn't like the way it stuck out or how it hid his top lip.Or how when he sneezed.. Anyways, A nice,clean,soft,light one makes it.
@nickichica@xanga - exactly.
@BlackJester37@xanga - I just put my toothbrush in front of my face to see what it would look like! Ahaha!
@kungfuhampster@xanga - Truth.
I don't have an ironic mustache. I have a beard. I have a beard because my summer job doesn't require me to shave. It is not irony, but sloth which spawns this facial hair.
I have nothing against mustaches...but not many guys can pull it off..not even my bf. I rather him be clean shaven all the time..lol
@BlackJester37@xanga - the victorian age was in the late 1800s, not the 1700s. and i didn't say mustaches dropped off the face of the earth between the 1800s and the 1970s. i just said the mustache was at the peak of its popularity. the people you named were mostly outliers.
@z_stands_for@xanga - amazing :D lol, i've shaved one on to see what it looked like, and went to my friend's house forgetting to shave the rest of it. his grandpa was visiting, who happened to be a ww2 vet, lol
@BlackJester37@xanga - Priceless moments. haha
Maybe it's like Pedobear. Disturbing and then became a joke. Nah, just kidding. Mustaches are a lot more innocuous, I think. I hope.
i like stubble -- but not facial hair. of any sort. kissing a guy with a beard is like kissing a badger-hair shaving brush. not pleasant.
It hurts to make out with my boyfriend if he doesn't shave.
That guy in the picture on the left would be really hot if he would shave and lose the glasses.
I like mustaches...
@kungfuhampster@xanga - Goddamned right.
