  • E3 2010: Physically Interractive Gaming, Yay or Nay?

The month of June used to hold so many pleasures within it. There was the joy of freedom and summer, there was the warming up of the ocean and the beaches and of course, there was E3. E3 is the convention that draws all eyes in the video gaming world to it. All of the biggest and smallest names in gaming get the opportunity to show off their year's work.  This convention usually brought tons of excitement to my small world, but now that world is changing.

A big feature since the Nintendo's Wii dropped into the world has been physically interactive gaming. I never understood the appeal of the Wii and jumping around while playing. I'm a traditional gamer, which also means that I'm very lazy and enjoy sitting on my ass and not moving for hours at a time. But all of these huge companies within the gaming universe are insisting that this is the future.

I marvel at the enormous strides these companies are making with their technology. It's truly incredible and maybe is a glimpse into the future, but I don't know if this is what I want gaming to become.

I understand a large majority of our nation is overweight so there's a built-in market for games that will help you get in shape.  Gyms around the country are probably cursing these games/future consoles and I don't really blame them.  And while I understand people are scared of going to the gym and getting judged for not knowing how to operate a treadmill, I do not understand why all of these companies are investing in these physically active games. Part of the fun of gaming is not having to sweat while you curse at your TV.

I don't want to play first person shooters and actually have to squat and pretend to pull the trigger. My XBox  controller is already too comfortable. I'd rather stay lazy.

Now to prevent you all from bashing me and calling me ignorant - I know that a lot of the games with violence that they featured still utilized the controllers but it is not hard to see that motion censors are the future for everything. I hope I'm wrong.

Maybe next year they will show us a new controller that fits on my head and reads my mind.  Hopefully I'll not have to use my hands.  This will allow me to game and do all kinds of things with my hands. I can play with Legos, I can pet animals or I can even masturbate...at least I'm being honest.  But this is just me dreaming. I have a feeling all of the consoles will be requiring these motion cameras very soon. Joy!

I know I'm a grumpy and old traditionalist, but I go to the gym. I get my weekly required exercise. I don't want to have to exert energy all of the time. Sometimes I just want to come home and be a human vegetable.  Maybe I am overreacting and taking this too far but I know that a lot of people just enjoy sitting around and gaming without moving.

Do you guys think that the future of video gaming is interactive/physical gaming?
