  • "I Am Sam" Brief Movie Review

    I AM SAM
is a good drama about a mentally-retarded man fighting to regain custody of his 7-year-old daughter.

The film had great performances by Oscar winner ("Mystic River","Milk") Sean Penn, Dakota Fanning [who was adorable and intelligent], Michelle Pfeiffer, Laura Dern, Dianne West, and Richard Schiff. This movie did what very few films manage to do - it made me cry. It was through the performances and not the writing that drove this film, and it was definitely designed to appeal to the overly-sentimental. I liked the powerful message of love and a connection that was the theme that was at the core of parenthood, and not just intelligence. Director/writer Jessie Nelson did a solid job. It's a good film despite some flaws, and it's worth a watch.

    Rating: 3.5 out of 5
