  • Sound Exposure: Scandal and Strange Videos

I've never really understood 80's music videos. Obviously, they were a new form of entertainment at the time, so there was a whole lot of experimentation going on. In some cases, we ended up with videos like Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', which was really quite cinematic and very memorable. Choreographed dances also became a staple at this time. Music videos now are essentially the same, if not more overdone than they were in the 80's. The only things that have changed are the music and the methods of filming. There's still just as much cheese to be found in every single one.

Nowhere is there more cheese than in the video for Scandal's 1984 hit 'The Warrior'. We're presented with a slew of people dressed like villains from a particularly bad episode of Star Trek, all engaged in some kind of dirty, synchronized dance. Meanwhile Patty Smyth belts out a love song that overuses analogies to guns and battle, and the cheese melts and makes a mess on the screen. The worst part of it all, though, is that you can't help but grin at this video. Maybe it's because of how ridiculous it is, or maybe it's because the song is actually catchy. Hopefully the former.

But then again, that's the 80's for you: bravado and pizazz all rolled into one giant decade the just oozed machismo and leg warmers. Thankfully, current pop culture hasn't let us forget groups like Scandal. The Warrior was even featured in Stewie Griffin's infamous iPod commercial, as seen below.

What's your favorite cheesy music video?
