  • Who Would Play Solid Snake?

This is a part of a post I submitted to the Couch, but a comment about it got me thinking. A few people think Metal Gear Solid would make a great movie, something I totally agree with. That said, which actor do you think would be good enough to play Solid Snake?

A footnote: Doing these posts has me thinking about playing MGS4.

    Game On!

Mancouch Gaming Says: The real shame here is that David Hayter, who does the voice for Snake in the English versions of the Metal Gear series, probably wouldn't be the one to portray him on the big screen. Hayter even looks a bit like Snake, but unfortunately, Hollywood wouldn't allow such a huge franchise to go without a big name actor. That said, there are a few bigger actors that often come up in MGS movie conversation:

He's been great as Batman, not so great as John Connor, but has basically proven that he can play the part of the grizzled hero effectively. My only problem with him is that he's already played the main character in so many other big franchises that it's almost gotten to the point of over-saturation. I say we pass on Bale for this role.

Hugh Jackman: He's certainly got the physical presence for the role, and his experience playing Wolverine (though some outings were better than others) has proven him capable of playing sneaky military types. This is another case, however, where I think over-saturation could impact how well received he would be as Solid Snake.

Eric Bana: Now we're slipping into territory that might be more feasible. Bana's had plenty of roles that prove his depth as an actor, as long as we don't count his stint as the Hulk. But for some reason I can't picture him sneaking around Shadow Moses Island, duking it out with the likes of Revolver Ocelot and Vulcan Raven. He's just not the type of guy who would hide in a box, frankly.

Obviously, nobody would be perfect. Snake's previous 3D portrayals have been so spectacular, it's hard not to want to have him come right out of the game and play himself. Personally, if I were to choose someone, I'd pick Viggo Mortensen. We've seen him in action in the Lord of the Rings films, but he's not quite the household name that either Bale or Jackman are. Could he tap the circle button furiously to prevent Meryl from dying? I'm not sure. But there's something slightly young-Kurt-Russel-ish about him, and considering Snake is based loosely on Snake Plissken from Russel's 'Escape from New York', I think Mortensen's got the right stuff.

Who do you think should play Solid Snake?
