Every so often we come across certain things, books, articles, keepsakes, even YouTube videos, that remind us just why it is we fell in love with something in the first place. It's a beautiful and exciting feeling, and for me, this is one of those things.
Liquid Tension Experiment is a sort of side project of Dream Theater, with only two albums released since 1997. Despite their relative inactivity, their instrumentals are so strong that I keep coming back to those two records, and manage to find something new every time. And there is just no greater joy than watching these incredibly talented musicians in action. Turn up your speakers for this one, it's worth it.
I really like Liquid Tension Experiment, I think the lead singer is quite detrimental to Dream Theater. I've been digging on The Mars Volta since they came out. And I really need to find more prog bands.
that was sick
You could argue this is progressive metal because of the drums and guitar parts. Anyways I heard a lot of dream theater themes and riffs going on there. Some very cool stuff for sure. All their instrumentals were sick. You can find more info about the band here: http://metalstorm.ee/bands/band.php?band_id=2772&bandname=Liquid%2BTension%2BExperiment
Patti Smith tops MY list
On the second tier would be Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd and Zappa as well as pre-Flashlight Funkadelic: PUMP IT UP for this
It's a shame that Dream Theaters songs are 12 minutes long. Such talent.
That bass is absolutely sick. I'd give both my arms to be able to play that... but then what would I play it with?
Nice track. Ever jam to Cynic? 2 albums in 15 years and theyre PHENOMENAL.
Progressive anything tends to pique my interest. I love music that keeps my ears busy, turns a record into an experience, and even does something new with the music everytime. One of the key thing that I want a progressive record to do in that list is to turn a record into an experience. After all, it is easy to get bored of a record, if you aren't always following.
Dream Theater is a beast of a band. Glad to see something up here on Mancouch.
As for prog rock favorites, I'd say Fall of Troy ranking top of my list right now. Coheed and Cambria was amazing on their In Keeping Secrets album (2113 was the shit), and it seemed as if their prog rock peaked on Good Apollo I. Their album after that however didn't sound up to par as the previous :|
first time i am hearing it. loving it!!!!
Favorite progressive rock/metal bands:
Dream Theater Liquid Tension Experiment Scar Symmetry Pagan's Mind Porcupine Tree Opeth Coheed and Cambria (yes, they are progressive) 3 Muse (I consider them progressive)
There's also one album in particular you must pick up: "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess". They did a one night gig where it's just the 2 of them playing. About 70% of it is supposedly improv. They went in with basic song ideas, and then just made stuff up. It's phenomenal.
There are some obvious classic rockers, but I don't listen to them enough: Rush Yes
I must disagree. I consider "No World for Tomorrow" very much on par with Good Apollo; at points I consider it better.
@icantbelieveitsnotreal@xanga - NWFT definitely had some good tracks on it. In fact, the first half of it was pretty good for the most part. After that there were just tiny parts or tracks (ahem, I'm talking to you, "Fall of House Atlantic!") that kept the album from surpassing GA I. That's just for me though.
You ready for the new album? >:D
@icantbelieveitsnotreal@xanga - I also have the evening with Petrucci and Rudess album. Every second of audio on it is worth its weight in gold...or, well, whatever the digital equivalent of gold is.
@NoHeroesForTomorrow@xanga - I don't see a problem with The Fall of House Atlantic. Since when do songs have length requirements? :P
But yes, I'm looking forward to the new album. I haven't listened to anything off of it yet, but I think I just want to buy it and be surprised.
I'm glad someone else on here has experienced it. It's absolutely brilliant right? haha
co&ca is the only prog that matters to me. i want music with a story and all that i can find is pink floyd, co&ca, and rush.
i dun hv one.
You should check out the band "RX Bandits" if you haven't already. One of my favorite bands that molds progressive rock into their sound. Being a musician, their side project "The Sound Of Animals Fighting" never fails to impress me every listen.
TOOL? Does anyone remember Tool anymore?
@punkofzombie@xanga - Tooooooooooooool! I listen to them most days. Saw them a few years back (think it was) totally mind blowing.
upsilon acrux
Awesome.
You should check out Solstice Coil. It's a progressive rock/metal band from Israel with influence of alternative rock such as Radiohead, Muse, Oceansize, Porcupine Tree and the Mars Volta.
We They have a new album coming out soon! And there are previews on the site http://www.solstice.co.il/music

Thanks for introducing something new to me.
