Over the past weekend, Aaron Ramsey, a teenage soccer player at Arsenal sustained a broken tibia and fibula at the hands of an aggressive tackle by Ryan Shawcross. As you can see in the video, Shawcross, plunges into the challenge as Ramsey collapses like a rag doll and the players close enough to see the injury frantically wave over the paramedics. Some of the Arsenal players have their face in their hands as they see Ramsey's leg dangling at a very unnatural angle. If you look at the player's right leg, you can see that the leg bends, not at the usual points of the knee or ankle, but somewhere between.
The ensuing scene is a mess. Ryan Shawcross is sent off. Before he leaves the field he sees the outcome of his reckless tackle and is reduced to tears and he takes his captain's armband off. Between the pain of the injured player, the concern on behalf of his teammates and remorse of the aggressor, it's a very moving scene that illustrates the level of emotion these guys commit to every game for our entertainment and their massive pay checks. We can only hope that young Ramsey can recover from this injury.
Despite the horror injury, it made me think: If I worked in an environment where there was a chance something like that could accidentally happen to me, but in return, I earned a professional football player's salary, I would probably take it. I mean imagine if you just had this horribly sadistic boss who loved setting bear traps in shady corners of the office. One day you're making copies and you step back a few paces while yawning and SNAP you've got a shattered leg. Still, you're going home and collecting weekly unemployment checks that are more than most people's yearly salary. Pain is only temporary, money lasts a little longer. But I digress....
What's the worst sports injury you've ever endured? and yes, chess counts.
You forget though that this injury potentially will finish off his career. If he can't get himself through physio well enough then that's it. He will have been a tiny blip on the global stage, and the money will dwindle. He will forever be a hasbeen
That's rough, for the both of them. That injury is bad, and Ryan Shawcross will most likely be haunted by that for a good while.
@adamcieslicki@xanga - I was just thinking that. There are players that are taken out of the game, for good, from injuries less than that.
Soccer is barely a contact sport. It's for pussies.
I love people who say that with little to know personal experience to back it up. A ruined ankle and a concussion of mine say otherwise.
I'm lucky to have never broken anything. A few years ago while I still played, I saw a guy get his collarbone snapped after being flipped over one of my teammates and landing on it.
Not to mention the number of toes I've seen ruined. One guys foot legitimately looks like it got caught in a meat grinder. Nastiest thing ever.
hmmm, i didn't see any of the things you pointed out in that video. just a lot of shawcross. i think i agree with you though, the money is probably worth the risk. plus you could afford to drug yourself up until you're completely healed anyway.
playing tennis didn't leave me with many injuries. a girl served a ball straight into my crotch once though. not going to lie, that was pretty awful.
Soccer and rugby injuries are often brutal and takes a lot time to heal.
I've seen a playmate in soccer broke her arm (she's just a feet away from me). It was horrible! Her bones luterally... Eek! The thought of it makes me dizzy!
@mcmeister89 - wait... was that a joke? soccer is barely a contact sport?? i beg to differ
@tykazowsky@xanga - It was a joke. The next line was "I love people who say that..."
I was bringing up the common attack on soccer.
@mcmeister89 - lol ok good... haha, reading back now it makes sense, i misread your comment, i thot the "people" was referring to those who thought it was a contact sport... gotcha.
lol, ive seen things youve written before and they are usually quite intelligible, and for a second i was like... no, cmon this guy is smart, why is he saying this? but im glad to know that your credibility is still in tact
The injury was horrific... Maybe we can claim consolation in the fact that almost the same thing happened to Ramsey's team mate Eduardo 2 years ago and now he's back on the pitch and better than ever.
Once in a triathlon, just a while into the bike leg, I was on my aerobars and made a stupid mistake which resulted in me losing my balance on my bike, falling and getting hurled across the road for about 5 metres, superman style. I got abrasions (bare freakin flesh) all over my body and I was out of the pool for a month. It was horrible. Fortunately it was all superficial so there was no lasting damage to my body, but damn the pain was unbelievable. Anyway I'm not sure if I'd agree with earning a fat paycheck with such a high risk factor. I mean if your body actually gets busted for life, where're you gonna spend all that money?
