  • Horrific Soccer Injury

Over the past weekend, Aaron Ramsey, a teenage soccer player at Arsenal sustained a broken tibia and fibula at the hands of an aggressive tackle by Ryan Shawcross.  As you can see in the video, Shawcross, plunges into the challenge as Ramsey collapses like a rag doll and the players close enough to see the injury frantically wave over the paramedics.  Some of the Arsenal players have their face in their hands as they see Ramsey's leg dangling at a very unnatural angle.  If you look at the player's right leg, you can see that the leg bends, not at the usual points of the knee or ankle, but somewhere between.

The ensuing scene is a mess. Ryan Shawcross is sent off.  Before he leaves the field he sees the outcome of his reckless tackle and is reduced to tears and he takes his captain's armband off.  Between the pain of the injured player, the concern on behalf of his teammates and remorse of the aggressor, it's a very moving scene that illustrates the level of emotion these guys commit to every game for our entertainment and their massive pay checks.  We can only hope that young Ramsey can recover from this injury.

Despite the horror injury, it made me think:  If I worked in an environment where there was a chance something like that could accidentally happen to me, but in return, I earned a professional football player's salary, I would probably take it.  I mean imagine if you just had this horribly sadistic boss who loved setting bear traps in shady corners of the office.  One day you're making copies and you step back a few paces while yawning and SNAP you've got a shattered leg.  Still, you're going home and collecting weekly unemployment checks that are more than most people's yearly salary.  Pain is only temporary, money lasts a little longer.  But I digress....

What's the worst sports injury you've ever endured? and yes, chess counts.
