The World's Tallest Building Has Been Completed In Dubai
The new tallest building in the world has opened in the desert-oasis city of Dubai.
I never even heard of this apparently splendid Middle Eastern city until a few years ago, likely in a news story about the construction of this super-tall building.
Interestingly, the building has been named "Burj Khalifa" in honor of the country of Abu Dhabi, which bailed out Dubai last year with a $35 billion loan. Perhaps General Motors should also do some renaming in honor of the United States government?
This graphic demonstrates a little better than my own words how tall this building actually is:
I bet King Kong would look like a flea on this thing, as the Empire State Building isn't even on the list of the world's tallest buildings anymore.
Here's the view of the top of the Empire State Building (with Kong!):
In regards to both buildings, I think I'd prefer to stay on the ground (I hate heights) . . .

Yay! I work for an airline in Dubai. I'll going up the building, y'all.
think i just wet my pants
I'll be there
Coolness.
'Twas a dark day for Malaysia when the Petronas Towers were eclipsed in height by Taipei 101. :(
But this is pretty cool, nonetheless :P
omg.
I'm terrified of heights... but that just brought on a whole new meaning.
Omg, so pointy.
that is SO breathtaking. I am difinetly going to put this on my list of "must go" places.
This is just Dubai trying to get another fifteen minutes of fame on Yahoo! News, it's kinda sad.
Wow! A plane won't be able to slice through it like it did through the steel columns of the World Trade Center. Splendid!
The thing pretty much bankrupted the whole country, and I hear there's nothing around it. So yeah, great planning.
It wasn't a big deal when I was asked to invest in it, and it's not a big deal now. The Emirati government needs to stop thinking "BIG" or "TALLEST!" and start thinking of recovering all the money they lost. Funny thing is, none of the Arabs were hit by the massive losses in economy, only the working class immigrants were.
I love the pictures of it with all the fireworks going off around it! :D
I think that's a stupid achievement imo.
@Starlite@datingish - Take a pic & post it on your blog! I can't afford to travel right now so I live vicariously through the exploits of others
lol
A new landmark for us to travel there...
So dubai thinks they're better than us eh?
The UAE is definitely making themselves a world leader in contemporary architecture. This is just another example of it.
I've always wanted to go to Dubai. My friend went this past summer, I wonder if she got to see it while it was still under construction, I didn't see a picture of it.
It's really nice looking.
I'm just proud of Malaysia
(Though the government is crazy stupid!)
Pretty crazy!
damn that makes all the other buildings look like pansies D:
Seeing as how most of the tower's 3.5 million square feet will sit empty and there's virtually no need for commercial office space in Dubai for the foreseeable future, Burj Khalifa seems to have been built more to stroke the egos of Dubai's ruling family and to suck up energy from our planet’s ever diminishing supply of hydrocarbons while serving no real purpose. Thanks...but this is a perfect example of the mindset we need to discard if we want to have a sustainable and productive future.
wow, it's amazing what slave labor can build. Not to mention the city is bankrupt.
Unfortunately, that building's just begging for a terrorist attack.
