  • Brutal Legend: Revolutionizing The Way We Play Games?

Brutal Legend is leaps and bounds ahead of every other game on the market right now in a variety of ways and I think that everyone in the gaming world should look to it to make a few changes. In short, Brutal Legend should revolutionize gaming (even though it probably won't).

Brutal Legend is bar none, the best written game I have ever played. There is always some one saying something new and hilarious. It is utterly fantastic. It had me and my friends in stitches.

There are video games with better, more involving game-play, but there is no game with a more fun storyline or better written dialogue. I can't even think of a game that comes close.

It also has the best soundtrack of any game I've ever played. It's easy to point out that that is a matter of taste and that if you aren't a fan of metal then the soundtrack isn't really for you (then again, the game probably isn't either), but the songs themselves are not my point.

My point is that for years we've seen an overwhelming change in the soundtracks for video games. It used to be just some simple extremely repetitive theme song. But in modern games it's all about playing pop songs (or some sort of score). It started off with a few pop songs and eventually the list grew, but it still got repetitive and the songs selected weren't always the best or most appropriate because they were chosen for promotional purposes.

Brutal Legend sets itself apart by having such a long playlist so that it never feels as if you've heard the same song 50 times, but also by having songs selected by some one clearly connected to the creative team as opposed to a marketing team. The songs were selected with care by some one who knew what they were doing. Not just slapping on the latest single from the next big thing.

Finally, what makes Brutal Legend such a leap forward from other games is the voice work. Starring Jack Black and various metal legends such as Ozzy and Lemmy it does have some star power, but more important is the talent. Video games sometime rope in names to play roles that they really just mail in. Here every actor seems to truly care and delivers a terrific effort. Never seeming stale or stilted. All the performances feel natural and real and fun.

Now, of course, the most important part of a game is the gameplay and ultimately Brutal Legend succeeds because it's so fun to play, but all these other elements add into that and are often forgotten or ignored in other games. Brutal Legend represents a huge leap forward for the gaming industry in all these areas and hopefully they'll inspire other companies to produce games that also care about these aspects that greatly improve the overall game-playing experience.

Do you think Brutal Legend should pave the way for a new era of gaming?

I dunno about the whole "if you aren't a fan of metal then the soundtrack isn't really for you (then again, the game probably isn't either)" because I like video games but I've never really gotten into metal. I don't mind it in small doses, but I am definitely not a big fan of metal.

This sounds like a pretty epic game. I don't play a lot of the manlier games (due to my serious lack of  getting the controls down). However, if I were good with the controller I would probably give this game a try. I'll probably go convince my boyfriend to play it so I can watch.

It does look and sound amazing... Damn. Just one more game that's bugging the hell out of me to finally nut up and buy a 360. Son of a.......

@foreverxnickyxlove@xanga - Well it's fun even if you aren't into metal, but all the ideas are sort of based on metal. If you like Metalocalypse, you'll love the game.

Wow, I'll definitely have to check it out. I haven't played a game that's kept me constantly laughing.

No. I hope it's a one or two time only thing. You can't overdo something this awesome... it would take away the awesomeness.

    Such a great game

This game was great and I'm disappointed it didn't sell better.  I'm a big metalhead and the soundtrack was awesome.  It was missing out on death metal but it had  a nice mix of Black, Thrash, Heavy, Glam, Power and Metalcore.

Oh yea, the game was also a lot of fun and was quite entertaining.

Huh. Looks interesting, but I don't have either of the two consoles it's been produced for, so I won't be buying it.

Yeah this game was pretty much one of the best games I've ever played. Definitely the most fun  game of them all though. I just couldn't stop playing it, and when I was doing other shit, I would have the game on and listen to the soundtrack. lol.

Brutal Legend was an amazing game, then i found out that Manowar was included in the soundtrack...Now I Can't Put It Down!

Fucking love this game. The soundtrack, gameplay, overall story, awesome. I hate when games craft up a shitty story so it seems like whatever it is you're doing has a purpose. the developers went into great detail with this game. Highly recommended.

More people should've played Psychonauts. It never got a fair shake.

That game was a metal overkill..it would be like the emo worlds road being made of razor blades and had rivers of blood with a hot topic on block AND My chem playing 24/7

  • raon_pureheart@xanga

@RedZeppelin6@xanga - or the goth worlds road made of a spinal chord, rivers of venom, cathedrals every new level, towns with an old victorian appearance (sweeney todd-esque), a casket carrier for a car, bridges made of thick ice, gates made of spider webs, your main character having a 'brendon lee crow-esque' look and a lot of Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Gothminister, Feilds of Nephilim, Anathema, Type O Negative, Moonspell and Evanescence playing in a constant loop. There are various different ways to tell the game from the other rockaholic lifestyle points of views. Still if he says this game is so good that it makes world of warcraft look like a huge joke then I'll play it! I played BioWare games and though it may not be your cup of good stuff, I like how they push the envelope of the psuedo suit in gaming.

@raon_pureheart@xanga -  I didn't enjoy it. I do hate WoW and all, but thr game was just kinda lacking something. Jack Blacks look at metal, or so it seems is stuck in a stereotype. Like an emo world with blood rivers. Not all metal is just skulls, fire and 8-ball shifters. not all emo is crying and bloody. I like metal and I like Jack Black, but I don't like his game. I can't rally say I see him as a metal artist, but he can be funny. I do like BioWare too btw =]
