While trying to come up with lists for the best of various media for the decade we covered movies and teevee. For those noticing, music was clearly missing (the final piece of the ultimate pop cultural trifecta). This is because an insane amount of music is released every year, let alone over the course of the decade. Not to mention how hard it is to pin down exactly what decade artists belong to (for example The Strokes and The White Stripes were both formed in the 90s, but neither was culturally relevant until the 00s) and how unbelievably contentious the topic of music is.
So it was believed to be impossible to create any sort of order or lists or comments on music for the decade, but that doesn't mean we stopped thinking about it. And as we thought about it, it became clear that one band truly captured the decade in a way no other recording artist did. That band was the Gorillaz.
The world's first animated band brought something new to the table that became the understated soundtrack to the decade. Claiming the Gorillaz as the band of the decade probably took you a little by surprise. You no doubt like them, but they probably aren't your favorite band. In fact, I don't know anyone who's favorite band is the Gorillaz and you probably don't either. But I don't know anyone who doesn't like the Gorillaz a whole lot. This cuts across all genres and tastes. Regardless of what type of music you like, you probably like the Gorillaz. The only other band that can compete for this level of near universal love is Sublime.
But let's take a look at some of they're credentials.
First of all, they are wholly a creation of the 00s. Sure there was an early incarnation in 98-99, but they didn't go by the Gorillaz and didn't release music and didn't fully form the characters until 00s.
Secondly, they have longevity. They were around throughout the course of the decade. From their introduction to most of the world in 2001 to today their music has been present. Many bands that you can think of as possibly deserving of this title probably got big for a few years, but they aren't really a presence anymore. Or in the case of bands like MGMT weren't around at the early part of the decade. My point is that at any point during this decade you could have turned on the radio and heard a Gorillaz song and you wouldn't be surprised.
Their musical style is one that fuses together a variety of influences from all over the musical spectrum. That has been a theme in pop music over the course of the entire decade. From the rap-rock and nu-metal of the earlier days of the decade to mash-ups to internet remixes to Girl Talk to the electronic indie rock bands of the latter part of the decade fusion of genres has been a staple throughout this decade. There are very few lines anymore. Can you even name what genre the Gorillaz are? We've seen a breakdown of genre over the course of this decade and the Gorillaz epitomize that.
Another trend of the 00s they represent is the explosion of animation. Sure, there's always been animation, but it's largely been viewed as a children's format. The past decade saw the expansion of animation into more adult realms. People are clamoring for Pixar to get oscars. You have the animation comedy explosion with family guy, futurama, adult swim, etc. that now we're used to comedies being animated. It's not weird to want to throw in some cartoons to watch with your friends on a Friday night. Speaking of adult swim, in many ways the Gorillaz paved the way for Dethklok which puts out successful albums and tours. We interact with animation differently than we did in 1999 and The Gorillaz are a large part of that.
They're music is just damn good. If you want to be a DJ, you will sample their music at some point. I've never heard a DJ who hasn't. If you go to a concert, you will probably hear their music during intermission. Almost any concert regardless of genre. Not to mention the level of talent and intelligence that is evident in every song.
They didn't just provide incredible and universally pleasing aural stimulation either. Visually the band itself and especially their videos are all very appealing. They created characters with back stories.
The Gorillaz are one of the few bands I can say that I've listened to and enjoyed every year of the decade. They are not only among the most talented and stimulating bands of the decade, but they are also among the most innovative. They've had a strong pop cultural resonance throughout the globe over the course of the entire decade and, in fact, epitomize many of the aspects that characterize the past ten years. Their sound itself simmers with an intellectual bend delivered in a very pop friendly format. There is an element of darkness, while at the same time it is endlessly fun. It is perfect to listen to through your headphones just to chill out/to admire or to play at parties.
ok, but ten years is longevity? try telling the stones that. heh.
Um yeah, about that longetivity... they still only have 2 albums. Granted, it's not a real band, but still.
The thing that bugs me the most about the Gorillaz is that their two most famous songs (before Feel Good) were more Del tha Funkee Homosapien creations. Awesome songs, but... gotta give Deltron some love for making those songs what they were.
disagree!!! dare and feel good are like their only good songs, that song clint eastwood SUCKS!!!! im soo sorry, i hate haters and try not to hate but i do not like this band..sorry again.
@raiderjester@xanga - Not true. The production of those songs was largely handled by Damon Albarn and Dan the Automator (who both did work on Deltron 3030) who were members of the band. Del was also a member early on.
And yes, only two albums, but that was enough to keep they're songs playing throughout the decade. Nine Inch Nails had been around for 20 years by the time he got to their 4th album, same for the beastie boys to get to their 6th, same for michael jackson to get to his 5th. Quality over quantity, my friends. Songs with legs rather than one that get big and flame out.
You got to like a band who has the talent and the ear to mix different amount of genres, and have it not sound like a mess.
@mancouch - I have nothing against the Gorillaz. I agree with your argument on quality over quantity, but when I think of longetivity, the Gorillaz don't exactly pop into my head. Their songs weren't all that popular except for Clint Eastwood for the longest time. It's not like Boston who waited so many years after the 2nd album yet still had all their hits from the first two albums cranking on every rock station. I was actually surprised when I heard they were doing a 2nd album because they had been quiet for so long (after the dvd).
I love that album to death, however. I remember the first time I heard in like 02? Good stuff.
@raiderjester@xanga - Their collaboration with Space Monkeyz (Laika Come Home) definitely were.
@mancouch - I've never heard their music played at a concert during intermission.
I can see a good point to all your reasons, but I still can't agree that they're the band of the decade. Sorry.
This band, when they were new, were refreshing. Although this decade wasn't known for the best music, and this is an ok band; they are not the band of the decade.
@complicatedlight@xanga - ten years is definitely considered that in an industry where turnover happens in a matter of months. Need I mention Coheed and Cambria, Avenged Sevenfold, and Los Lonely Boys? They were there, then gone.
<3 Gorillaz. Love love love Damon Albarn. They helped me learn about Blur, which I kinda like better! lol I was a big fan during "Phase 2". But they remind me of darker years of my life and I cant listen to it without remembering them so I just don't listen to them anymore. :/
I was only 6 in 2000, so I can't honestly say I've listened to them and enjoyed them every year of the decade. I do remember hearing them for the first time in 2002 when I was 8 and falling head over heels for them. And I've loved them ever since, so that's like 8 years there?
Gorillaz probably influenced the music I listen to now the most, if we're talking about music made in my era. Embarrassed to say this, but while most eight-year-olds were in love with the Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC and Prince Charming, I was into 2D :D Still one of my favorite animated crushes, wheee <3
i wouldn't call them the band of the decade, but i love them and I definitely think they're innovative and talented. :)
The Gorillaz is the band of the decade!. The lyrics are awesome and theyve got catchy tunes.
I'm not sure if ill call them the band of the decade, but for sure they were original and good, the music, well was pretty cool and better in the techical area than many others.
Maybe thats why i love more blur than oasis, you cant go wrong with damon ;)

Gorilla who?
Thanks for the suggestion but I cannot agree.
@complicatedlight@xanga - The stones started sucking in the early 70s

@raiderjester@xanga - Four albums if you count their B-side albums.
the gorillaz are okay, but your constant use of "they're" in place of "their" bothers me to no end.
@mynameisblueskye@xanga - Good point! I thought the one was just a bunch of remixes though?

You make some valid points.
@mancouch - anyway. you get what i'm saying.

@Gerald_Washington@xanga - oh go ahead and mention them. you want to. i can tell.
