I have a question for all you Couchians. I want to buy a Nintendo DS and have seen both the DS lite and the newer DSi for sale.
I have done a little bit of research and have found that the DSi has a slightly bigger screen, 2 cameras, SD card capabilities, allows you to download DSiware games, and lets you browse the internet with the Opera browser. But it's also more expensive and doesn't allow you to play Game Boy Advance games (though that doesn't matter much because I only have 2-3 GBA games).
Is it worth it to buy the DSi over the lite? Is the camera as gimmicky as it sounds, are the DSIware games any good, and is it worth the more expensive price (especially if I can get the DS lite used)?

since you're at it, you should just go for the newer one cuz technology
is always upgrading and there're only a 50 or 60 $ difference. I'm
pretty sure that there will be another one coming out soon enough .
About
downloading games, you don't necessarily NEED to get the DSi. I myself
have the original DS and I just bought another card to play with
downloaded games ( cost me 190$ in total , DS + card + bunch of useless
accessories )
So really , there's no BIG difference between the two if you're just using it to play games
if money is a big issue, i'd say the dsi is not worth it. i faced this debate myself last spring. i wanted a ds for gaming, not for taking pictures, browsing the internet, or watching media, so the ds lite was right for me.
for me, the ds lite backwards compatibility with the gba was pretty important. i skipped out on the gba sp, so i'd been coveting the backlight and rechargable battery for about 6 years. if you happen to be a pokemon player, you can upload pokemon from the gba generation to the ds pokemon games. this feature is not possible with the dsi.
even if you don't want to browse the internet, the nice thing about the dsi is that it uses up to date wireless technology. the ds lite only uses WEP, an outdated wireless internet setting. whenever i want to use wi-fi connect for a download i have to switch my home's wireless internet settings which is always a nuisance.
whichever you pick, definitely get some kind of card to download ROMs. i got a cycloDS with a 4gb sd card for about $60 online and have downloaded over 30 fully functioning games so far.
no point. i have all of them & you get bored quickly ):
they need better games!
The DS light is amazing!
I have the DS lite... I almost got the DSi but I don't see the point in getting it unless you're going to use like the camera and whatever else. I just wanted to get it for the games- if I want to use a camera or browse the internet I use my computer or my camera.
I like my DS lite. If all you want it for is the games, you might as well just get it. The screen size is perfectly fine on the lite anyway, and it's not like caveman technology or anything. And besides, if the game's good enough you don't really care about the screen size anyway, in my experience xD
DSi's are amazing.
It really comes down to [and if money isn't an issue]:
Are you going to be playing both DS games and GBA games? DS Lite.
Just DS games? Easily DSi.
If someone already owned a DS Lite and was wondering about upgrading, it's not really a necessary upgrade, but if you don't already own a DS, a DSi is really awesome. And I've little interest in GBA games anyways.
if you get the dsi.. it's probably gonna end up like how the psp was.. more for internet browsing, less for gaming. -_-
i think you should get the DSlite.... honestly... the camera thing is fun.. the first five seconds.. but after a while. eh...
if you're lucky, you could always buy the dsi used.
I broke my DS lite around the time the DSi came out. I was in the same boat where I didn't have that many GBA games, so I figured getting the DSi just made sense. Whereas I would like a more quality camera and faster internet, all the extras are simply that: extras. Performance-wise, the unit plays well, and I do like the ability to download DSiWare games via the shop. Although I haven't really seen that many titles that I'm interested in to download, I'd like to hope that Nintendo is trying a little harder to get out better DSiWare.
@Nevando@hardestlevel - DS lite adds more than just GBA games. If you wish to play games that require adapters, such as any of the Guitar Hero or Band Hero games that require the guitar adapter, you need the GBA slot. The DSi cannot play those games (except Band Hero, if you only play drums/vocals, and never use the guitar/bass aspects of the game but that is a waste). Also, the GBA slot allows you to add rumble packs, and other random extras.
I thought about getting a DSi when I heard they were coming out, but I love my Guitar Hero games, and enjoy playing the few GBA games I have (or uploading pokemon from the GBA games and put them on my DS game!) so I am glad I chose to get the DS lite. It's cheaper, and offers more that I want. I don't really feel the need to surf the internet on a DS, or take pictures. I could easily do that on my lap top or cell phone.
I have the DS lite. I also have a GBA, so it was a plus that I could play the games on the DS. If you get the DS lite, the fact that it plays GBA games is a huge plus because it opens up your choices as far as games. A lot of the DS games are cooking or animals or Hello Kitty type things. At least GBA has the old NES/SNES games available for it.
oh ya all the video game related posts will be on mancouch now i believe? damn no more hardest level? :(
I'd just get a DS Lite. One, it's cheaper. Two, my phone can take pictures too (and my camera, for that matter) and can browse the internet. (And so can my computer). Three, I have heard of absolutely zero downloadable DSi games that are of note/or have impressed me.
I would just go with the DS Lite. You get to play more games, since it has the bottom slot for GBA games as well. The DSi does not have that feature, which is why I didn't trade my DS in. Do you really need that silly camera feature? I don't think so.
DSi would be for more internet browsing being you can post the pictures onto the internet (facebook, myspace) after you take them and such, but really, i'd get the DSlite if your all about the gaming.
Ds lite can play gameboy advance games, if you don't like gba games go for the newer one.
i own a NDS since nearly a year and im super happy with it!!!
im not much unto DNSi coz i always have my mobile phone with me, and theres also a camera. so i dont need another one..
i would choose the NDS lite... also you can buy cheap GBA games and use them :)
good luck :)
Honestly? Why are you buying it if it weren't for playing its games? Your phone does a better job at taking pictures and most phones are starting to have wifi on them for internet browsing. I'd go for the DsLite. If you don't care for the looks of the Ds, heck you could even save more money by purchasing it's predecessor, the DsFat.The dsi was just an empty upgrade.
get the PSP3000 or PSP go....better and easier to get games than DS
I have a DSi, and I love it. I never had any of the other DS models. I wanted the DSi because of the DSiWare capabilities. It's a great system, totally fun. I'd recommend it. The online shop games are much cheaper than in-store games, $10 for the most complicated games. That makes game buying cheaper.
I got the DS for Christmas and I LOOOOVE it. For the money I don't think the screen size is worth all the extra change. Think about how much you'll actually use it for all the other things like internet and what not...Eh, I'd stick w/ the lite personally.
DSi fool. The internet browser is the BEST.
Dsi for sure.
Slightly off topic, but when HardestLevel got deleted, did all of the blogs featured on it get deleted too? I'm looking for that blog which recommended DS games...
(P.S. I have a DSi and it's awesome)
