Brewery Creates World's Strongest Beer

(Source)
This is a guest post from Just A Guy Thing.
What’s better than beer? A brew strong enough to knock you on your ass, that’s what. BrewDog, a brewery in the U.K., claims to have created the world’s strongest beer. The drink, called “Tactical Nuclear Penguin” weighs in at an astounding 32 percent proof.

Of the 500 330ml bottles released, 250 will be available for £35 with a further 250 available for £250 – the latter will include a share in the BrewDog company as part of its ‘Equity for Punks’ campaign which is aiming to raise £2.3m to build a new eco-friendly, carbon-neutral brewery in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The company’s blog states the mission of Tactical Nuclear Penguin as:
This beer is bold, irreverent and uncompromising. A beer with a soul and a purpose. A statement of intent. A modern day rebellion for the craft beer proletariat in our struggle to over throw the faceless bourgeoisie oppression of corporate, soulless beer.
A warning on the label states: “This is an extremely strong beer, it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance. In exactly the same manner that you would enjoy a fine whiskey, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost.”
Tactical Nuclear Penguin beer comes packed not in an elaborate box or case, but a brown paper bag with a hand-drawn penguin on it. You can buy yours at BrewDog.

to be clear, i comment on this only because it's very late at night and no one else yet has.
a 32-proof beer is not a beer. this beer was not made for "soul and purpose". this beer was made to hold the record in highest alcohol content by volume.congratulations, tactical nuclear penguin, on accomplishing what malibu, parrot bay, any given schnapps, or name-your-own-girly-alcohol, has already accomplished in the form of creating an alcohol which college-freshmen boys will think they are cool for taking straight shots of, and any given girl will most likely prefer to chase with sprite or some equivalent soft-drink. dark beer ftl, yet another fail for the other side of the pond.
Nice but too damn expensive.
Eh... that definitely took the fun out of binge beer drinking.
Will I drink it? Nyet I'll stick to my Vodka.
Dude, just awesome. :p And, even though it wasn't the intended effect, I gotta say its cute anyway. :p
Totally love the name, man.
The penguin looks like the Sanrio character Badtz Maru. A bit too cutesy for a beer that's supposed to knock you off your ass, right? XD
i didn't read this but the heading makes it sound stupid. i instead read the first comment because it was shorter and i agree
Haha. 32 proof = 16% alcohol. I know of lots of beers that have higher alcohol than that (Sam Adams Utopias has about 27% alcohol).
Epic fail. That said, as a beer drinker, I'd give it a try.
@supaflychikn@xanga - You obviously don't know a damn thing about beer. I regularly drink beers that are above 10% alcohol. Then again, you're probably used to flavorless yellow cat-piss that most Americans associate beer with.
I'm more about the cider, myself!
@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - Thank you, sir! My husband brews beer and I can tell you there is not enough respect for craft beers here in the U.S. There's so much variety out there in beer and what do Americans settle for? Bud Lite. Please. (Haha I don't really even drink beer but I know what real beer is!)
I'll be side hugging all night long if I drank this.
I want to try it!
32 proof? I'd give it a try! But I wonder what it tastes like since it has a decent amount more alcohol than the average beer...
@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - Hey now. Don't diss all Americans. Not all of us enjoy cat-piss taste.
I was about to comment about Sam Adam's Utopias before I read your comment (though, even S.A. says it tastes more like a port or cognac than a beer). Regardless, I'd stick to S.A. ...they go more for flavor than a world record.
@Sighing_Woodpecker@xanga - If you're into beer, subscribe to mine and trunthepaige's beer review blog.
@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - I'm into GOOD beer. :) And I've read yours before (just didn't think to subscribe).
@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - haha, i may have been a little harsh. but yes, i'll take my catpiss any day.
LOL sweet.
@FracturedOne@xanga - 32 Proof = 16%
@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - @Kate - Hey now, Cat Piss isn't what everyone drinks. It just so happens that it's a cheap beer for the masses. Like I'll spend my money on those parties where I need to provide quality liquor to people I don't know really well.
@AznFier@xanga - I misread. And to think I haven't had one, yet.
Beer can't be both a percent and a proof. If its 32 percent fine... if its 32 proof fine... but it is impossible for it to be both 32 percent and 32 proof.
@supaflychikn@xanga - Agreed. 32 proof is about as high as you can go without distillation or any other weird freezing tricks. You could use more specialized yeasts, like Turbo Yeast Power 23 or something weird like that, but with normal yeast, you're kind of limited.
Essentially, they made wine out of hops instead of grapes. I'm not terribly impressed.
this beer is listed as beer an d is brewed with same process other use. Beer is listed by alcohol by content rather than proof like liquor is. Also qoute from WIKI:
The strength of beers has climbed during the later years of the 20th century. Vetter 33, a 10.5% abv (33 degrees Plato, hence Vetter "33"), doppelbock, was listed in the 1994 Guinness Book of World Records as the strongest beer at that time,[81][82] though Samichlaus, by the Swiss brewer Hürlimann, had also been listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the strongest at 14% abv.
Since then, some brewers have used champagne yeasts to increase the alcohol content of their beers. Samuel Adams reached 20% abv with Millennium[86] and then surpassed that amount to 25.6% abv with Utopias. The strongest beer brewed in Britain was Baz's Super Brew by Parish Brewery, a 23% abv beer.[87][88] The beer that is claimed to be the strongest yet made is Tactical Nuclear Penguin, a 32% abv Imperial Stout made by BrewDog using the eisbock method of freeze distilling - in November 2009 the brewery freeze distilled a 10% ale, gradually removing the ice until the beer reached 32% abv.[89][90] The German brewery Schorschbräu's Schorschbock—a 31% abv eisbock,[91][92][93] and Hair of the Dog's Dave—a 29% abv barley wine made in 1994, both used the same freeze distilling method.
Just so you know,
also since Bud(re:dud)weiser has grown into the "King of beers" its quality have went down many levels. I can remember as a child taking sips of different beers from family members (a taste not getting drunk) some worse than others. A few years later I found that Bud, had turned into bitter swill dishwater.
Probab.y the best I ever had was one year me and a buddy had started a tradition of trying something new and we had Tucker Blackberry Wheat, awesome, not bitter, clean flavor with just a touch of berry sweetness.
Now everyone who drinks the Bud swill must love bitter water, maybe they should try drinking their own urine forst, not much difference I bet.
Now take your beers of all kinds and run it through a still and you get a liquor. Distilling takes te water element out of the ethanol and creates much stronger alcoholic drinks, or in my case RACE FUEL for cars, much better use!
This is not the strongest beer in the world. Sam Adam's Utopia (still) holds that record at 23% or 46 proof... It drinks like a cognac, doesnt have bubbles, and is best served a room temp in 2 oz servings...
It, like the beer you've pointed out, is only a beer in name and brewing process.
