  • Do Men Listen To Mainstream Women's Music?

    (Source)

This whole month, I have carried a pretty controversial conclusion that has a lot to do with men, women and their CD collection. My hypothesis was that divas or soon-to-be-divas often get the short end of the stick, when it comes to reaching the ears of straight men. One great example I pull out is Beyonce. She's a bestselling artist, and had some best selling albums with her group, Destiny's Child. However, since the song is hardly identifying with men, the women listen, and the men all choose to ogle at her.

I personally didn't find this very surprising. After all, the way of man is that women idolize the woman star, and men listen if they think they are good. Or if they are pretty, they start ogling. Face it. If none of the words apply to him directly or if he doesn't like the song, it's not going to show up in a straight man's CD collection.

Being called an educated listener, I'm always one of the people who can tell when a certain album isn't going to get a lot of Male Rotation, and which one is least likely to get women's rotation. Another example of this is Black Eyed Peas' very own Fergie.

Separated from the Black-Eyed Peas, she has a debut album, and odds are some girls might have liked it, but you can guarantee most men did not want the pleasure in listening, and it circulated radios like a NASCAR marathon, and hopped NOW Compilations like a rabbit (which, by the way I will cover some other time). Even Leona Lewis is getting a crack on her likely fan-base from Entertainment Weekly, featuring the following statement, "Women and gay guys rejoice! Leona Lewis is No. 1 [on the charts]!".

Not to mention that entertainment shows also follows this rule with a simple quote: "it belongs to my girlfriend". In the movie Empire Records, a shoplifter named Warren stole a couple of CDs and applied this very quote to a CD by Whitney Houston, a best selling artist. Another example would be Noah's Arc, where Noah, the protagonist  snooped through his future boyfriend's CD collection to figure out whether he is gay. His friend instructed him that "you can tell if a man is gay by their CDs".

Once he found some female CDs (including Whitney Houston), the initially straight Wade responded, "oh, those are my (ex- ?)girlfriend's". Simply, nobody is going to admit to owning a CD, if it has a sudden "girly-girl" streak across it, and that applies to albums by Keri Hilson, Lil' Kim, and even the likes of Madonna, hence Family Guy's crack on Madonna's fanbase, claiming that it mostly contains only gay guys and women.

Right now, I am conducting the experiment with men, and am going to give the results in a bit. For now...both men and women, have you noticed this trend in music? What are your thoughts on it?
