Do Men Listen To Mainstream Women's Music?
(Source)
This whole month, I have carried a pretty controversial conclusion that has a lot to do with men, women and their CD collection. My hypothesis was that divas or soon-to-be-divas often get the short end of the stick, when it comes to reaching the ears of straight men. One great example I pull out is Beyonce. She's a bestselling artist, and had some best selling albums with her group, Destiny's Child. However, since the song is hardly identifying with men, the women listen, and the men all choose to ogle at her.
I personally didn't find this very surprising. After all, the way of man is that women idolize the woman star, and men listen if they think they are good. Or if they are pretty, they start ogling. Face it. If none of the words apply to him directly or if he doesn't like the song, it's not going to show up in a straight man's CD collection.
Being called an educated listener, I'm always one of the people who can tell when a certain album isn't going to get a lot of Male Rotation, and which one is least likely to get women's rotation. Another example of this is Black Eyed Peas' very own Fergie.
Separated from the Black-Eyed Peas, she has a debut album, and odds are some girls might have liked it, but you can guarantee most men did not want the pleasure in listening, and it circulated radios like a NASCAR marathon, and hopped NOW Compilations like a rabbit (which, by the way I will cover some other time). Even Leona Lewis is getting a crack on her likely fan-base from Entertainment Weekly, featuring the following statement, "Women and gay guys rejoice! Leona Lewis is No. 1 [on the charts]!".
Not to mention that entertainment shows also follows this rule with a simple quote: "it belongs to my girlfriend". In the movie Empire Records, a shoplifter named Warren stole a couple of CDs and applied this very quote to a CD by Whitney Houston, a best selling artist. Another example would be Noah's Arc, where Noah, the protagonist snooped through his future boyfriend's CD collection to figure out whether he is gay. His friend instructed him that "you can tell if a man is gay by their CDs".
Once he found some female CDs (including Whitney Houston), the initially straight Wade responded, "oh, those are my (ex- ?)girlfriend's". Simply, nobody is going to admit to owning a CD, if it has a sudden "girly-girl" streak across it, and that applies to albums by Keri Hilson, Lil' Kim, and even the likes of Madonna, hence Family Guy's crack on Madonna's fanbase, claiming that it mostly contains only gay guys and women.
Right now, I am conducting the experiment with men, and am going to give the results in a bit. For now...both men and women, have you noticed this trend in music? What are your thoughts on it?

A lot of men like Taylor Swift. Once my brother randomly busted out into "Baby boy' by beyonce... frightening
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - that is so wrong on so many different levels. you should be ashamed of yourself. children look at this site.
mainstream music? eww.
Anyways, I can definitely see this happening. No man should be caught listening to woman music. That music should be kept in the kitchen where it belongs.
@AphoticxIllusion@xanga - Easy now. SBC didn't put that picture of Beyonce up there. Haha!
Aww, people should listen to the music that pleases them. Who cares if it's "women's" music or "men's" music? That only feeds into stereotypes and stereotypes aren't cool.
@AphoticxIllusion@xanga - children only look here because you said you would give them candy and let them play pony on your lap
PSHAW! my little brother plays "you belong with me" on his electric guitar almost every other night. and he gets all the ladies too... *sniff* xDD
my boyfriend loves party in the usa. no joke. i can always predict when i hear a chick song he's going to like.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - yeah, you caught me. lmao
@mynameisblueskye@xanga - i didnt even notice the picture before.

I'm a woman and I hate most mainstream music...male or female.. I like other types of music though by both males and females.. musical ability isn't exclusive to one gender.
I wish it didn't even matter.
I noticed that, I guess. But music that I find a lot of guys ( usually ones I know ) a lot of girls like, too.
And everyone has their own personal preferences.
So if guys can relate to girls who can relate to Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry, they'll listen? (:
@BlehhItsTu@xanga - Maybe, if they aren't so fixated on her humps. Do you notice that most of the time, women write more love songs, and breakup songs than men in more genres than just hip-hop, pop, rap and R&B?
I wish everyone just listened to whatever they want!!
My boyfriend doesn't care if people find certain music girly. He's going to listen to what he likes.
you'd never catch me listening to Beyonce
I doubt a majority of men listen to the mainstream women music, but I doubt a majority of women listen to the mainstream men music.
what do you classify as "women's" music and what do you classify as "men's" music? there are breakup songs written by men, so what is a "man's" song?
it's like men preferring action movies over chick flicks ... it's a generalization.
Meh. It really depends. Every gay guy needs a diva, but every once in a while, there will be a guy who has a guilty pleasure. Maybe the rule is, one CD, not gay. More, then...
'sweetest dreams' is the only beyonce song i like. many girls for the most part only get the record deals based on their... personal aesthetic appearance (by which i mean, sex sells). lady gaga, britney spears, beyoncee, katy perry, lily allen... and so on, it is all the same strategy. and the music sucks, it isn't because they are women, but because it is that premade crap.
... i've never even heard of: leona lewis, fergie, whitney houseton, big girls don't cry... though i admit i like that last group's band name.
my point is that besides taylor swift, the only girls that seem to really be targeting both are girls that i wouldn't shake hands with, out of fear of catching something. and that is my only real exposure to 'womens music'... yeah
the love songs thing is interesting cause i hear allot more male sung love songs in metal than vice versa. in fact the closest thing to a female sung love song in metal (that i've heard) is 'there for you' by the hard rock group 'flyleaf'. let me know the results :D
i've noticed this too. i hardly ever share any female music with my guy friends because they will cover their ears as if it could kill them.
@lenybobsyouruncle@xanga - What I can tell you is that a former female Xangan has met a musician that didn't listen to anything from a female, until she introduced him to Lucinda Williams.
