  • Guy Love

Before I continue on, I must say that I truly mean no offense with what I am about to say. Although I may joke, I do not mean to attack or insult anyone out there. I do understand that it’s a sensitive subject. Please consider my commentary with a carefree spirit~

Guy Love – What exactly is “guy love”? As described quite wonderfully by the two actors in Scrubs (please see above clip), it’s a “guy love” between two guys who are “closer than the average man and wife.” However, do we ever hear of its female equivalence? I have not heard of the term “girl love” used in such an innocent way.

Now, I know such close relationships between two people, in which both may be male, do indeed exist. It’s normal. I find Turk and JD (the two actors in Scrubs) absolutely adorable - especially Turk and his awesome voice! There’s also Chandler and Joey from Friends who share a similar relationship – the clean, fun, and deep understanding of each other as friends. I love it!

However, the above examples involved only the shows’ depictions of the situation. If what is described in the song lyrics (link below the clip) is exercised in real life, would we accept it with such an open heart as we do with those two men? Wouldn’t people be suspicious? I am not ignoring those who genuinely experience this deep connection, but perhaps there are those out there who are abusing this phrase “guy love” as an excuse and a cover for something that’s not so innocent?

There are people who tread the thin line between a platonic relationship and something more, which often happen between males and females. However, when a woman and a man behave as such, people will claim that they’re interested in each other or excessively flirting, and if one party is in a relationship, then it may even be considered cheating or at least it would be frowned upon.

In the case where a man and another man is involved, “guy love,” or “bromance” as some may call it now, is used to justify their interactions that could easily be mistaken for something more. They feel that “there’s no need to clarify,” and to further quote the song, “it's like [they] married [their] best friend, but in a totally manly way.” They would put their girlfriends as second place on their scale, because “brothers” would always come first. They are both male; hence, they understand each other in ways that a female partner would not. There’s playfulness, but there’s also something more.

There are those who are so set with the traditional idea of a heterosexual relationship that they refuse to imagine themselves in anything otherwise. In a sense, “guy love” is their means of escape, the best form of limbo. This way they can have the best of both worlds.

Is “guy love” truly as innocent as what’s shown on television or is it used by people as a code name for something else, like the way some use the term “business trips”?
