Why I Refuse To See "The Box"
(source)
The Box hit movie theaters not long ago and since then I've been filled with an ear load of annoying buzz about it from my friends, who also happen to want to watch that piece of shit. Not that I don't like Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as actors. Nothing wrong with them at all, but the plot just seems like an utter pile of crap.
The plot follows along these lines: A married couple, who are probably struggling financially, are presented with a small box with a shiny, probably red, button. If they press the button, they get one million dollars, but someone in the world who they don't know will die. After they press it, or don't, the box is recycled into the world and another person gets a chance at the box.
Maybe I'm just a heartless, money hungry person, but the guilt of one persons blood on my hands will pass when I'm rolling around in $1 million dollars. I know I'll probably get endless flame for such a bold statement, but I'm 100% I'm not the only one. When I already see the "dilemma" of The Box as black and white, I can't see how deep this plot can be.
Are you going to watch The Box? Would you press the button if given the opportunity?

I had to watch the fucking Box. I wanted to watch something else. It was alright, I guess. I was pretty pissed at the time, so I can't really give an accurate review.
I'm not gonna lie to you, I would totally push it. Because when you think about it, if the box is given to someone else, they would push it and someone would die anyway. I'd rather have a guilty conscience and a million dollars if a person is gonna die regardless. Heartless? Yes. Does it matter? No. Lucky for some random person out there I will never be presented with a situation like that. =p
Knowing my luck, I'd push the damn button & get the million dollars but then someone else would push the button and I'd die.
@LauraG0929@xanga - so first you're a slut and now youre a murderer. That's kind of sexy.
That's an interesting dilemma. It's a good plot to show the struggle of emotions in human nature.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I'm just being honest. I didn't see your input? And you really hold self imposed grudges, don't you?
I won't see the box for an entirely different reason - it's based on a short story/30 minute Twilight Zone episode, so I already know both possible endings they'll use for it.
Spoiler alert goes here.
1) one of them presses the button and the other dies because "do you really know your husband/wife?". 2) they push the button, someone dies, and they realize after finding out the button is being reset and passed on that they could be the next 'someone' to die because of the box.
End spoiler alert.
But even without knowing that, I wouldn't see it because as you pointed out, it's really a black & white situation. It can't possibly make for much of a movie.
you're right.. horrible movie. they could of made the movie just 15minutes and it would of been the same
well if that $1 mil doesn't get taxed........... bahahah jk. i dont need the money i have rich parents and stuff. there was a thread on a maplestory forum, sleepywood, that beat the question to death.
@LauraG0929@xanga - I said you were sexy. Is that a grudge?
My input is: Personally no, I wouldn't kill somebody. A million dollars isn't even that much money anymore except to poor people.
From the previews, I'm under the impression that there's a threat one of the family members could die--they really did mean that "anyone" could die. If the plot were as simple as "push this, get money, a random person dies, you live happily ever after", it wouldn't be a film.
@snapeful@xanga - I was kinda thinking the same thing. A million dollars, when the hell is that a lot of money? 50 years ago maybe. Stupid poor people.
I would push it, and here's my reasoning: people die every second all over the world. I know this from infomercials and numerous TV ads. Why on earth should I not profit from one of these deaths???
I saw the original Twilight Zone episode. How they stretched that 30 minutes into a full length movie I'll never know...
I don't plan to see it though.
@Shy___Away@xanga - Because people are more worthy of life than you. What do you do? Open your legs for a person and spread your STDs.
What if they killed someone important? Like anyone besides you?
to push or not to push, that is the question. Maybe. I might do inny meeny miny mo if I can't make up my mind. ;) Sounds like an interesting storyline...
I'd definitely push it, especially for the chance that @ShimmerBodyCream@xanga might be the one to die, bahaha. ;)
@weare_weare@xanga - chh too bad I am God's favorite.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Too bad god doesn't exist.
i wouldn't push it and i'm not going to see it.
@weare_weare@xanga - Yes I do exist.
yeah it's a completely shitty plot device. why would you need to examine how people's greed adversely affects people they don't know with this contrivance when there are concrete examples that you could be using instead? there's a plethora of examples of people profiting off misery in the world, everywhere from the exploitation of labor to the exploitation of resources.
are screenwriters so afraid of dealing with these issues that they'd rather just sum it up with some inanity like this box?
honestly the plot isnt as clean cut as that or the movie would be over very early on. it was actually a pretty good movie with a smart concept and it was eerie. i dislike cameron diaz but the movie was still pretty good.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Delusional much?
I would press the button. But the one thing I have a hard time getting behind is the fact that they're "struggling financially" when they've got that huge house. I couldn't suspend my disbelief to try and convince myself that they're doing all that bad.
