  • The 7 Deadly Sins of Online Chatting

I have been a frequent internet user since 2003. Since my friend introduced me to MSN and helped me get an account. These 6 years I have used - learned - learned to avoid the 7 deadly sins of online chatting. Not only does it suck to the extreme - it is incredibly annoying for others.

    1. HAVING CAPS LOCK ON ALL THE TIME

It's okay if you're yelling/making a point/making a word stand out! Don't get me wrong. I do that. But all the time? Which sentence do you prefer:

Went back to school yesterday and it was like WOAH
WENT BACK TO SCHOOL YESTERDAY AND IT WAS LIKE WOAH

    Stop it.

    2. TyPiN LiKe DiS

I feel like my brain is wobbling when I have to read it! Also, doesn't it kinda take longer for you to talk like that anywho? It may look cool... to like, a 9 year old.

    3. Typing with a x on the end

As much as i love my cousin, she does this. Every time she says something she puts x. So our conversations look like:

    "Hey whats up?"
    "Not much, yourself? x"
"Oh not much, college today. Kinda boring =P"
    "Ohh how annoying x"
    "You have a nice day?"
    "Yeah been okay thanks x"

Not only is it terribly annoying, i look like a huge bitch for not doing the same thing!

    4. txt tlk

I used to do this when i was younger, but I got out of the habit early on. I was quite young, 12 maybe? I now have to think about how text language is used, and what they would say. And i'm finding it harder and harder to read.

    5. Being "Away" When you're not actually away!

It's just rude. Seriously. It's like you're choosing who you want to talk to. Something you can only get away with on the online world! it's seriously rude.

If you don't want to speak to them... block them! xD

    6. Wheeeeeen peeeeeople eeeelaboraaaate what they're saying, like thisssssssss!

I do it a little... but i genuinely know some people who do it like with every sentence. It's not cool guys. It's annoying.

    7. When people change their display name every 2 seconds

I don't really want to use the email address to identify you. Isn't that what MSN names is all about?

Can you think of any more sins of online chatting?

Oh yeah, another big one's when people abuse smileys. I don't mind seeing one if you're trying to make a joke or showing that you're happy, but when a comment goes like the following:

    "I can't believe it's finally the weekend!! x33 I'm so excited about it. xD I love this band, btw. =]]]] They're so good~ :D"

Then it's just a tad obbsessive. Although a friendly face at the end of each of my posts is ritualistic, so we'll avoid the hypocracy... For now. :D

  • iiinfinitesimal@xanga

#2 & #4 i HATE. on the other hand, i'm ALWAYS away when i'm online. sorry

  • goblinsinthemirror@xanga

I don't get the x thing, nor seen it before. is it like "kisses"?

  • frozencherries@xanga

something I do that I know is annoying is not finishing a statement in one IM. like
    Me: omg
    Me: something funny
    Me: happened today
    Me: that
Me: i wanted to tell you about

whereas as normal person would have just said

NormalPerson: Omg, something funny happened today that I wanted to tell you about

  • fugita@xanga

@iiinfinitesimal@xanga - I have to agree I am online 24/7 and usually away from the keyboard so my status is "around might not be in the room" or "around" or might be away from the keyboard" and sometimes I am busy working but still online in case someone needs to reach me ASAP so my status is AWAY.

  • vashts6583@xanga

having a font/color schema that is impossible to read.

  • RazorBladeParade@xanga

I'm always invisible. There are too many people who IM me out of the blue all at once and it slows down everything else I'm doing.

I also hate when I'm talking to someone and then I wait for them to reply to something I said, and then they just sign off a minute later. What the hell?

  • TheScaleDiaries@xanga

I don't use AIM as much, but I like the Away feature or better yet Invisible, that way I can just have one conversation instead of 3 at once, that's always annoying.

  • just_the_average_jane@xanga

@frozencherries@xanga - Hah, I do that too!  I don't think it's that bad when you're both chatting on the computer --but when one person is on their computer and the other is on their phone, I'm sure it must be annoying.

  • live_for_love@xanga

As others have said, my biggest peeves are insane font/color combos (pale pink font on a white background? really? D<) and not finishing a thought in one IM. I think these are probably more of an irritant to me than weird ass typing.

  • Whiskers@datingish

    - Really bright fonts like green or yellow? Don't really know why they choose it

    - When they sign off and then sign off and then sign off and then sign on.. those notificiations things on the bottom right comes up constantly and the noises

    - When they buzz you (or whatever they are called) but it's so annoying. Especially, when they are doing it for fun or to annoy the crap out of you. It actually works.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

Actually I like #5 so I can avoid people if I don't want to talk to them. That or I say BRB and never come back. :P

  • lesprit__descalier@xanga

i do 5 and 6 all the time.

in fact. i'm away ALL the time, everywhere, and something is wrong if i'm online. everyone kinda learned to ignore my away sign and talk to me anyways...
  • TheDoubleDeuces@xanga

No way.. i'm a big fan of #5.  there is no rule that says that you actually HAVE to talk to anyone... period.  Its just like looking at your caller id then realizing that you dont want to talk to that person right now.  And its highly not rude.  If the person were right in front of you and you didn't respond.. .then yeah... very rude.  But online?... nah... you've got your away sign up...

  • jesuismir@xanga

    1. I'm always away.
    2. ppl get tired wich is y dey type like dis. heck, after an hour of typing like this all i want to do is dis. =P
    3. i change my away msg a lot. hahahaha...

    I hate it when people uses white font b/c i have my side set up to white background/black font. sometimes AIM changes the bg but not the font color -.-;

I don't like being on AIM anymore. got something to say? call me. :]

  • BlobOfGoo@xanga

I don't think there's anything wrong with having away messages on when you're not away-- I do it all the time. I imagine doing that is very compatible with the heavy usage of "status messages" and things of the like on facebook, twitter, and even some AIM clients (in other words, away messages are getting more and more like status messages anyway). Plus, most people that know me even remotely well can tell when I'm actually away based on what the message is, or wouldn't get offended if I didn't respond either way (because people who get offended easily aren't the easiest to be friends with!)

  • soberheartss@xanga

    those are for sure
:) except the being away thing
im always on busy, when most of the time im not :D

  • nikki__tran@xanga
  • snapeful@xanga

bash.org has all these and more but in a satirical way, and it's really funny :D

    a:HI EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!

b:try pressing the the Caps Lock key

a:O THANKS!!! ITS SO MUCH EASIER TO WRITE NOW!!!!!!!

    b: ....well fuck me

  • EverlastingSimplicity@xanga

The being away one... I am guilty of, but most people who I often talk to know I'm usually at the computer but preoccupied for a little bit. lol.

I definitely have a problem with the people who tYpe LiKe DiSh. And I still have to put up with it. -__-" Drives me insane.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

there's absolutely nothing wrong with #5.  why can't people choose with whom they'd like to chat?

  • ShimmerBodyCream@xanga

Maybe you are annoying and people set their away status on purpose. Don't bug them. BYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEE oKaY

  • curious_maya@xanga

    nudges!
    gahh, annoyance much!?

  • OngishLyOngLee@xanga

i don't see anything wrong with an "Away" status because how can you prove that they aren't?  what if that person really is "Away".  also, depending on what kind of chat program you're using, it might automatically show that you're away if you show no activity for at least 5 or so minutes.

i would like to replace that with not saying goodbye.  i've chatted with people before and all of a sudden, they just leave me hanging.  my reaction is, "hello?  are you still there?"  *crickets chirping*  at least let me know you're not going to chat anymore.  i don't care for sugarcoating so i'm okay with, "okay, gotta go.  bye!"  at least i'm not typing to an empty screen.  just like playing ouija.  you never leave the game until whatever entity you're communicating with or people's conscious control says goodbye.

  • kittiING@xanga

Over usage of exclamation points irritates me to no end. Even if you type perfectly but use multiple exclamation points, I'll completely ignore what you said. Or when people just don't make any sense at all. It's irritating.
