We recently brought up whether or not nerd-loving girls were a myth... and someone explained: "I think it depends on what you mean by "nerd". I like dorks, but I don't like nerds..."
What's the difference between a dork and a nerd? A quick Google search turned this up:
And then there was this, from phdcomics.com:
I have to say, I'm still not sure on the difference between dorks and nerds... let alone geeks.
Can you break it down in plain English for us on Mancouch? Or even better than plain English: which one are girls most likely to have sex with?

I think its all in the eye of the beholder, but im rather fond of that hierarchy you got there.
i love phd comics! but i don't have an answer to your question, sorry. =p
haha wow... i hope the last question is kidding.
to me:
geeks = geeky gamers. usually kinda cool; computer related stuff
nerds = mainly books smarts; book/school related stuff
just my opinion.
I've honestly always been very fond of both geeks and nerds. Mainly because they tend to be extremely smart, and they have the answers for my questions, and the solutions for my problems. :)
@AnchorsAwayx@xanga - yah it's a joke.
I'm agreeing with princessremy. I date a geek. Video-gaming, card-playing geek. :)

mystery solved.
Simple, nerds are usually obsessed with a non-mainstream hobby, like action figures. Geeks are into collecting more mainstream things, like video games and nerds tend to be more socially awkward. I'm not great at explaining, but see encyclopedia dramatica links below.

the ones most likely to get some are neither nerds or dorks. Alpha Males or the Alpha males' friends are the ones most likely to get laid.
Dork : Frequently misses the point of the subject matter or situation. Also has pointless habits/interests. Examples: One night stands, temporary romances, picking on other(s) for fun, misuse of the word dork, etc.
Nerd : Highly intelligent, never comes to conclusion without first realizing and considering all relevant points. Wants to be social, but has difficulties relating to those with below genius IQ.
Geek : A higher level nerd who only cares about innovating in preferred field. Prefers to socialize with nerds or geeks. Everyone else is a dork (see definition above).
Gotta love the nerdy ones.
whennn in doubt urban dictionary!
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nerds
@algebraicdisco@xanga - Nerds tend to be socially awkward for a reason. There are too many pointless social rules.
@jasonwl@xanga - I thought they were socially awkward because unlike geeks, they don't hide their nerdiness, so they begin to talk about things no one else in the room holds much interest in?
I'm dating and totally in love with a 'geek'. He's an electrical engineer who is VERY knowledgable of Star Wars and anything involving electrionics/power systems basically. He's shy, but not socially akward and actually has a life outside of his passion (like playing guitar, wakeboarding, etc). And therein lies the difference between 'geeks' and 'nerds'. Geeks (like nerds) are intelligent and may have 'childish' obsessions like with Star Wars, Legos, etc. However, for geeks the obsession is not all encompassing, they can function in social groups fairly well (though they often don't enjoy large groups) and have lives outside their labs/work/collections (if they have any, most geeks don't collect stuff as adults, but still have the things they collected as children...your normal nostalgia).
(I, personally, never knew there was such a category as 'dork' I always thought it was a generalized insult towards anyone who was acting like an ass or talking out of their own back end)
i like dorks!
I would've switched Dork and nerd. Nerd has very little ability to have social interaction. Dork is someone very excited about techie and cool stuff. But I think everyone deserves a fair chance.
@vladisbeast@xanga - omg i got that emoticon in your display pic! HAHA I LOVE THAT EMOTICON
Oh mancouch, you've confused me now. T_T
Ahhh, I think the three terms are essentially synonyms, but like all other synonymous words, there are slight differences in the meanings. Like somebody above said, when I think of nerds, I think of somebody that focuses a lot of book smarts. The word geek gives off the feeling of being savvy with technology, and a dork is simply somebody that's like, easily confused... I guess. Haha, I'm bad at explaining. Nerd=socially awkward, geek=technology, dork=slower in terms of social...activities?GAH. NO, THAT'S NOT RIGHT. FUCK. I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. LMAO. screw this.i love geeks and nerds!
@xueyo@xanga - awesome face is awesome. Thats just the end of the story.
A GEEK is usually a well paid professional in some sort of technology industry or someone with a great skill in technology (like gamer geeks).
*I'm a Database Administrator and thus a computer geek"
A NERD tends to be someone into Science Fiction lore, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, and so on. Nerds put on costumes and group up with other nerds to explore the world of Cons around the world or discuss the vast reasons why James T. Kirk is better then Picard as Captain of the Enterprise.
(A geek can be a nerd and a nerd can be a geek and either can get laid if the girl is into the guy.)
A DORK is an idiot without a clue and the only way a dork is getting laid is by accident or if she pities him... or if she is a dork as well.
(Geeks and Nerds can be dorks however so can Preps, Jocks, Motorheads, Cowboys, Emo Kids, or anyone else for that matter)
Nerds are those kind of people who are into complex mathematical equations/situations and are just all brains and nothing else in general. Dorks are completely the opposite.
Better chance at sex? I'd say nerds.
