  • Are the Jonas Brothers being Hated on a Little too Much?

It's a very rare thing to hear of a guy like myself defend modern day pop acts like the Jonas Brothers who are adored by so many young girls but my personal curiosity is to why they are constantly being ridiculed so much in media outlets like youtube.com, by not just their fellow peers, but grown folks over 25 years old who are at that age where some worries could be easily eliminated. Yes i understand that some people are going feel intimidated by young celebrities because of the connections that they had to get them where they are, but shouldn't it be no surprise that young successful stars are even in existence?

It's no secret that it's a generational trend for young people under 25 years old to find a spot in popular culture, especially in the music scene. We heard and seen the likes of many generations of young singers that girls have adored and whom guys considered their guilty pleasure. consider the artists i've listed as a relevance to my rants.

    1960s
    1. Beatles
    2. Paul Anka
    3. Beach Boys

    1970s
    1. Osmonds
    2. David Cassidy
    3. Jackson 5

    1980s
    1. New Kids On the Block
    2. Deborah Gibson
    3. Tiffany

    1990s
    1. Spice Girls
    2. NSYNC
    3. Backstreet Boys

    2000s
    1.Demi Lovato
    2.Miley Cyrus
    3.David Archuleta

Again i ask, why all the hatred for the continuing cycle that the Jonas Brothers seem to possess as role models for our modern day teens? Unlike teen celebs like Chris Brown and Lindsay Lohan, they don't beat their girlfriends, nor display drunken scenarios in public. And let's not forget about their pledge to abstinence. To me that sounds like the kinda guys that a Dad would consider an exception to dating his daughter.

Far as their music is concerned, personally i find their work an exception to the collection of music i have ranging from all sorts of genres such as urban pop, rock and it's many sub-genres, latin, and country. Sure the Jonas Brothers may be signed to Hollywood Records which is owned by Disney and when you think of Disney you think of kids. But let's not forget people that Hollywood Records is just another professional label that once had acts like Fastball, the Insane Clown Posse, and Duran Duran on it's roster. Hollywood Records is for adolescences and older people who wishes to reach celeb status as a singer and put out songs to earn a place on the American top 40 even if you are a teen musician like the Jonas Brothers who have achieved success on that same chart with songs like ''Burnin Up'' and ''Paranoid''.

So that puts them on the chart with artist like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana who have both had pop success on the American Top 40 with hits such ''1979'' and ''Smells Like Teen Spirit''. If the Jonas Brothers are constantly popping up on the American Top 40, then shouldn't that tell you that they possess the same musical qualities as musicians such as Kanye West or Britney Spears whose names as well are always on that chart? Cause the Top 40 is a Billboard musical chart that mostly consist of adult talent over 21 years old singing music mostly requested by grown people. Also, the Jonas Brothers were originally signed to Columbia before being affiliated with the Disney label, but due to lack of interest to further promote the band after the release of their debut album, ''It's About Time'', the Jonas Brother decided to switch labels. But who says every album released by a musician is going to be perfect? Anyone remember ''Glitter'' by Mariah Carey?

So are there really hypocritical grown folks who say they ''hate'' the Jonas Brothers, but actually do? Because I'm a 20 year old who decided to take their music into consideration after hearing their latest cd, ''Lines Vines, and Trying Times'' which i believe have a couple of radio friendly tracks such as ''Turn Right'' ''Before the Storm'' and the 80s inspired, ''Much Better'' that'll get stuck in your head. So if a 20 year old like me can admit he listens to the Jonas Brothers, then why can 29 year olds admit the same thing when they appear on their youtube music videos making derogatory remarks about their sounds and appearances.

If you hate someone and come to their youtube videos, then something must be awfully wrong. I have my theories as why i think people are so resentful towards the Jonas Brothers, but i would like to know your theories and opinions.

LoL I like some of their songs, what can I say? They're catchy. I don't understand why musicians have to be some emo punk group or straight thuggin rappers just to be accepted by fans. Sometimes there's no need for little fan girls to be going apeshit over them, but whatever. I'll bob my head to "Burnin Up" any day.

  • mynameisblueskye@xanga

Good point. In the Year 2000, some people loved The Click Five and Fountains of Wayne. By that definition, I guess they are kind of being hated on too much. I don't listen to their stuff, but it's a to each his own kind of situation.

  • Morningstarrising@xanga

I haven't paid much attention to them, but I guess that's because they're not shown too much in a negative light in the tabloids... they are POSITIVE role models.  If I was a teenager, I would probably like them.

  • TropicalOceanSunset@xanga

I don't really have a problem with them. I think I've only heard one song of theirs. What I DO have a problem with is their ridiculously tight pants. Eek.

  • yankeesrock92715@xanga

    I love them But I am a teenage girl...so..haha

  • mynameisblueskye@xanga

Does this mena Miley (excuse me for bringing her up) is the new millenium look at Britney Spears, and Girls Aloud is the Spice Girls? Is this whole thing a retread of the 90's?

  • JoeytheGenie@xanga

I'm sorry, but in my opinion their music is sub-par.
I would take Nirvana, Jimmy Eat World, Creature, Protest the Hero, &etc over them any day

  • xDark_horizonx@xanga

Your uh generation list is a little/a lot wrong, but regardless i suppose the jonas brothers fill the niche of good (sort of), clean and excitable music for the current teen (and older) generation.
However I don't think I've ever listened to a song of theirs all the way through, and probably never will.

  • allyouwanted15@xanga

I agree completely. I may be a teenage girl, but now its getting to the point where its not even "cool" for a teenage girl to like them. Seriously, what's wrong with society? Is it because they aren't wild and negative role models, or they don't sing alternative stuff (a good deal of which has no real meaning) that they are labeled "teen and tween girls only"? Anyways, I agree and thank you for writing this post.

As for their music, I don't think it's genius work, but it also doesn't make my ears bleed. I like them, they're pretty good role model's, their music is catchy and they're pleasing to the eye, which is a good bonus, you have admit.

All of that aside, I think people need to shut up about the Jonas Brothers. It's one thing to dislike an artist, but for their to be an uproar, a mass movement against them, it's pathetic. People who spent so much of their time promoting their hate for them are just as stupid as the people who spend the bulk of their time freaking out about them.
  • depp_and_meaningful@xanga

They're not being hated on "TOO MUCH". Everyone gets hated on.

I am a bit tired of seeing so many Disney kids thinking they can sing and entertain. T__T

  • InsideAmylyn@xanga

The Jonas brothers are horrible. There's really no argueing it...

  • GieGieHeart@xanga

You have just earned more gratitude than I can ever express from me. Hands down, I agree with everything you just wrote. Not only because I am a Jonas Brothers fan but because many seem to assume that because they are signed by a Disney label that they don't have the 'talent' to be real artists. How that conclusion even comes to pass baffles me.

Maybe they are hated on for being positive role models because everyone knows how horrible that is.....Riighht.

I love the Jonas Brothers for many reasons. Just like any teenage girl, I find them really attractive, obviously. I like their sense of style. I like the fact that they are trying to be positive role models, be that to further their career or not. I like that they have such a loving family and aren't afraid to be proud of it. I love that they do so many charitable things, for example, the Change for the Children Foundation.

Most of all, I love them for the musical ability. I really appreaciate good music. Their last CD no doubt proves their versatility. From the album A Little Bit Longer songs like Lovebug, Can't Have You, and A Little Bit Longer are amazing. My favourite song, however, is Eternity. It's not on any official album but it is a song they wrote back in 2005 (I believe) for their grandmother who had passed away. Anyways, that's all, I'll stop ranting now. Great post and thank you for writing this :)

  • splitsecondshot@xanga

I just don't like their music.

  • bamxocandy@xanga

i mean i don't personally enjoy their music but i agree that people just need someone to pick on so they pick on them....if you think about it i mean they built their career out of nothing and it is very successful, they have good relationships, and their pretty much the idol of every preteen girl out there...give them a break .everyone has to start somewhere....but seriously when people go on youtube and bash people its like..if you hate them why waste your time talking/blogging/commenting about how much you hate them....drop it

  • mynameisblueskye@xanga

@depp_and_meaningful@xanga - Yeah. That does kind of get old, especially since some of them sound the same idea-wise.

  • stealingtheory@xanga

I used to hate on them, big time.

But then I SAT THE FUCK DOWN and grew up.

They're just regular guys making solid pop music. I still don't like their stuff, but I think everyone's being way too hard on them AND their fans.

    Nice article!!

As for me...I really love them...I'm 29 and I am much more of an indiepop/rock person, historically - but they got my attention accidentally just before they got famous (I get pretty set in my musical ways and was ignoring new music when I first heard them).  So I wasn't hearing nasty things about them, because no one was talking about them.  I was won over right away...their music is very well done, kind of old-fashioned, simple pop that has sounds that span the 50s-90s, some really good sounds that got abandoned when pop fell apart in the 90s.  They are a band apart in a lot of ways.

I really could give a crap about top 40 and pop, but they caught my attention because they genuinely seem to just be doing their thing the way they want to, and doing it with the label that happens to suit their POV and current level of maturity. And I think they deserve more respect than most of the MTV type bands who are MUCH faker: pretending to be edgy/mature when they are as developed and corporate as anything on Disney (it's just the way the music industry works, across the board), but those bands are worse - they are fooling kids into thinking they're exactly what they're not: anti-corporate, rebellious.  I find that more mainstream (Jonas aren't the mainstream, they've never had a top 10 single) and deceptive, but the kids eat it right up.

Unlike most other Disney, the Jonas Brothers DO play honest music and, despite what you hear through their overdone marketing, stay pretty true to themselves and are normal - not weird or sheltered.  They don't seem to get too fussed that you are all making fun of them, though they know it, because they don't care whether you think they are cool or not.  Unlike all the fake/pandering MTV bands (who diss them out loud for publicity and apologize about it later when you're not looking). But earnestness is not as corny as MTV has convinced you it is.

Oh and they also kick ass live.  Much better than their recordings, in my opinion, which are overproduced.  And that is much more than I can say for a few of the other bands I've seen this past year.

I just hope it all pans out for them.  I think they deserve a good career.  The hatred against them is based on reactionary ignorance from people with little musical taste or sense of context, and I just don't get it.  The pop music industry is finally offering you something a little different & cut above, and most people are too shallow anymore to even recognize it.  Bummer.

    Answer to your question:

No. They can never be hated on too much. =D
  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i mock their abstinence pledge. that's an extremely personal thing. if you're going to wear a stupid ring about it and tout it to the media, you're just whoring it for attention. and i am going to mock you.

  • justaloner@xanga

    @MissPixieGlitter@xanga- I agree.

I dislike the Jonas Brothers because their voices sound all the same to me. If you have more than one singer in a bad, I'd like to be able to differentiate between one and the other. Their lyrics have no content and seem like pathetic attempts to sound deep and profound; their music is an extremely long distance from "genius"; their guitar-playing isn't all that special or crazy talented, like Synyster Gates (from Avenged Sevenfold) for example. And Joe should learn to play real drums, not just a tambourine. If they want to call themselves a band, they gotta have a drum player. At least be like Blink-182 and have each person play an instrument that requires skill. Even the White Stripes have drums and guitar and a bunch of other instruments among just two people- but I forgot, the Jonas Brothers just aren't talented enough.

  • lil_azn_saphire@xanga

their tight pants freak me out :/

  • Lil_Dude433@xanga

    @justaloner@xanga - Amen.

It's a matter of flaunting and over marketing themselves into getting their squeaky clean image into people's head. Why do people hate them? Whether it's Hollywood Records or the Jonas Brothers themselves, it's just that overrated part that annoys the heck out of everyone.

Don't show off the damn purity rings if they don't want people to start making fun of their sexual behavior/preference/morals. Or wear a heck load of tight-ass jeans and not get people criticizing their fashion sense.

It's a matter of doing something that gets people talking negatively about them.

  • Breakin_D_Habit@xanga

I don't like them or their "fans". Both annoying. They also claim they "Write their own lyrics" but no they collaborate with REAL writers so wheres the talent yall? Thats one of the reasons why I dislike them and mainstream music.
