I was hanging out with a few friends the other night, and one of them was texting this girl that he was into for the majority of the night. Eventually, someone called him out on it, and he defended his actions by saying "Dude, she's so into me. Look at this. She keeps putting smiley faces at the end of her texts!
Predictably, we made fun of him for the rest of the night, but then we started trying to figure out the smiley face and what it meant.
Note: it's a very real possibility that we were just reading into this way much, but, well... the conversation was hilarious, so it kept going for a while.We soon split into two camps. Half of us thought that girls just use smileys to punctuate texts, the way that a lot of people say "man" or "dude" a lot. The other half assumed that smileys were only reserved for special occasions (which, I still swear, is ridiculous). This continued for a while and didn't really get anywhere until my friend dropped a bombshell: he was sending smiley faces back.
Immediate, universal disgust. All of the other guys in the group agreed: there's absolutely no reason to be sending these things back. No excuses. Even if a guy is dating a girl, it's okay to be cutesy, but the male smiley face ranks pretty low on the acceptable scale. We even came to the conclusion that
girls would even find it lame for their guy to be sending smileys.
Of course, we're just one group, and the Mancouch audience is considerably larger.
Guys and girls: what are your thoughts on the "smiley?" What does it all mean?

Er you can't really tell anything from my smilies. If I include one, the only thing you can assume is that I'm not extremely angry with you.
I use them basically as often as I would smile in a real life conversation.

it might have been just an automatic signature and meant nothing.
smily faces don't mean anything except that she's not currently annoyed with you.
and.. although i wouldn't be disgusted if a guy used smily faces, i would think it's kind of weird.

I think its great when boys use smiley faces. Theres not even enough boys here.
I use smileys A LOT. Mainly because in real life, I tend to smile A LOT. It's also an easy way to be polite, if that makes any sense. I mean sure, maybe sometimes it means a girl is into a guy, but there's no way to tell that via text message, especially if she does it all the time. When I get a smiley from a dude, though, I usually assume he's flirting.
I always thought smileys meant that you were getting lucky :o
haha just kiddin, smileys are like different languages, different people use them for different moods, sarcasm, sexy tiem (Hello, my name ah Borat.), or just that shes not pissed.

As for the post. I must admit...I send some smileys. At first my texting was fine. Then one day...I just...I just put a smiley in. I don't know why I tried it. It was well received...and I've been in a downward spiral since.
I started off small....now I can't stop. My texts look naked without a smiley! Now I'm sending them to everyone!!
BUT.
Before you judge me...know that I have admitted my problem and am seeking help for it.
guys can use it without any shame. Its fine.
It adds to flirting if yall are flirting. If not, its just to punctuate texts like you said.

@Lordv16@xanga - Once in a while I won't use any emoticons in a conversation to try and break the habit and they'll ask if I'm okay and that I seem sad. I can't stop using them, it's like they've just become a part of me now. . . . :)

I use them to express things. I show my expressions with smiley faces. I only start doing it a lot though after talking to this one guy because eventually we usually end up having convos of just smiley faces. I think he is the only guy that uses a lot of smiley faces that I know.
I use smile faces to say things when Im really happy, or maybe I'll use them more often if its a guy I like. Like if I see a hot guy I'll text a girlfriend and be like
" Heyy look at him. :) "
and if I like a guy I'll be like
" Haha yeah I missed you :) "
so there is a bit of a difference. I dont use smilies very often if I DONT like they guy.
So I would say either she is WAY over doing it, OR she likes you. :)
It can be used for a plethora of contexts. And it's absolutely fine when guys use them. Personally, I like it when they do. Like someone else has said, there's no shame in that.
I never thought there would be a time when a man would read more into something than a woman. After all, it is usually the woman who is over thinking, over analyzing, and picking every little thing apart to convince herself that the guy in question is into her.
There is nothing wrong with a smiley face. Smileys and emoticons in general are a way of communicating feelings and facial expression when you aren't face to face, ie, through text! Maybe your guy friend was sending smileys to convey a flirty message. Obviously a smiley face means more than just a period, but it really depends on the person. Is she putting it at the end of everything? "I just twisted my ankle! :)" "My cat just vomitted a bird on my lap :)" or "How was your day? :)"
What's so wrong with a little smiley ending at the end of a message anyway? How is it weird for a guy to send one? I find it odd that this is coming from a man who wears Cookie Monster shirts. :)
I think it really depend on the actual text that the smiley face is being used for..
Like:"I think you're cute (:" = Flirting"My cat is being so cute right now (:" = Not flirting"haha that's cool (:" =(to me) Not Flirting.To tell you the truth, when I use smiley faces it is usually when I am bored or I need to fill in space because I don't know what to say. Unless of course it is in a long text like:"I had a wonderful day. My brother just came back from New York. We spent some family time together. Boy, I sure did miss him. (:"That of course is just expressing you are happy. ha. To tell you the truth I don't think two people could say that they use smiley faces in all the exact same ways. But one univerisal smiley face is ;) 1. Playing around2. Flirting.

...unless they do it like, EVERY text. then that just comes off over the top to me. and usually comes off as me thinking you're a "player" who thinks of themself as cool, or is going to end up being a clingy boy.
but in general, I love them. :)
Some people are smiley whores. Watch out for those because their smileys mean nothing. NOTHING, I TELL YOU. But otherwise, it just depends on the context.
