I randomly stumbled on this video of a retractable car door - wow check it out!!
One of the coolest things I've ever seen on a car. I like how the narrator casually mentions that in order to allow the door to retract into the floor of the car, they had to remove a beam or pillar from the side of the car. If you got sideswiped and died, I guess at least you'd die in style.
As for me though, I'll take basic safety over the cool factor. Ugh I must be getting old.
How about you: if you had a choice between:
A Lexus with a side beam and no disappearing car door... or
A Lexus with a disappearing car door but no side door...
i agree with you--I'm all for safety. The doors look cool, but their probably expensive as all get out. Could you imagine trying to get them repaired?? ($$$). What happens if you get out of the car and it is raining heavily?
I guess those doors are similar to the ones that fly open, like in back to the future.
sorry i'm sure doors like that would totally freeze over during the winters we got here
thats soo cool I want one of those disappearing car door- but not on that model car its so ugly
I'm not so sure that the b pillar in this case really has a lot do with car safety... or really any given b pillar for that matter. yes, i'm sure it does add some extra stability and what not... but, primarially the b pillar is just to latch the door onto... and more so for vertical support... not for lateral support. And if nothing else, the b pillar is moreso moved back 10 inches on this car as they said thats how much they lengthened the door. The b pillar is just a reference point for the generalized design and makeup of the car. And i didn't see anything about the removal of a side beam... i might be just dumb and didn't hear / see it... but yeah...
Why does the video look like it was made in the 80s? Is this an old idea that has never been popular/publicized?
I want that
@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - haha, it DOES look super dated. I like the parking spot demonstration... i hate getting dings in my doors from jerks who park too close :(
It seems more time consuming to wait for the car door to appear and disappear... What if I have to make a quick escape and jump into my car on short notice? Haha.
pretty cool fer shur ...it's from like the futuuuure lol ;)
If I were to drive that thing, I have the feeling that I would accidentally press the button and fall out of the car. Or something. If you forget the seatbelt, but hey.
Ha that's pretty cool.
Can you pull a rabbit from the engine?
Seriously though I agree with most of the comments already here... it looks cool. But it doesn't seem really practical.
I think it's cool. If they could make sure it would never freeze up then that would be super awesome.
wow , cool, old video though haha
i watched the video and i was just the whole time.
