  • Misadventures in Racism!

Well, folks, there's been a lot of cuh-razy crap goin' on in the world of Post-Racial America these days. Ever since January 20th, we believed that racism disappeared overnight, that the clouds of racist intolerance had evaporated the moment our first black president descended the Capitol steps to be sworn in.

I mean, think about it. We've gone from presidents who all sort of looked like this:

to a guy who looks like this:

And then, just when we thought that everything was cool with America's race issues (except for when it comes to immigrants, of course), Henry Louis Gates had to ruin everything by breaking into his own house. Regardless of your own take on the whole thing, the fact of the matter is that maybe we're not as racially tolerant as we believe we are in this country.

Here are some examples of misadventures in racism found online today:

English may be our only language, but we're still working out the kinks...I guess...?

Finally, let's hear it for our failed education system ONE. MORE. TIME.:

Way to go, Asian kid! Nothing's better than a good in-yo-face pwn.

I agree with a lot of what's said in this post, but the whole thing is about America. And then that last video is clearly a bunch of English people.

  • laytexduckie@xanga

Bahahahahaha, oh how the tables have turned in the video. But yeah, America is not as racial friendly as people believe it to be. Especially when Obama came into office.

  • AznFier@xanga

Cowardly? I never heard of that before.

  • JusT_AhNaTa_cHiNeeZ@xanga

Yeah, never heard of the cowardly before.

  • JusT_AhNaTa_cHiNeeZ@xanga

I forgot to add "Pwned, miss redhead!"

  • yourblondeness@xanga

    @AznFier@xanga - @JusT_AhNaTa_cHiNeeZ@xanga - I have....watch some old western movies....

  • AznFier@xanga

I can't even tell if that is a guy or girl.

  • salmandarrr@xanga

@yourblondeness@xanga - Yeah, it sound more like "yella".

  • snapeful@xanga

i've encountered people who think that "american" (aka white blonde blue eyed or whatever) is a race... usually i ask them why they don't look native american.. bah

  • xsPoNgEs_go_SQUISHx13@xanga

lmao. chinese? asians ftw, y'all :D

the 'cowardly' and 'yellow/yella' connection can be traced back to more than one origin, probably. because i don't know what the western origin is, i can't say. but in asian countries, wearing yellow was a sign of cowardice (even though their 'purple hearts' were yellow flowers...weird...)

  • canadianposer@xanga

@snapeful@xanga - Reminds me of a shirt I have that has a picture of a Native American holding a sign that says, "export illegal immigrants"

My grandma calls people Yellow. I just think of "You yellow bellied punk!" and that's how I remember what it means :D
  • applebottomjeans08@xanga

Honestly I think that it is very sad that certain people still feel that it's ok to judge people just because they are different. I mean everyone in this world is not meant to look the same, dammit (sorry, had to get that off my chest.lol)

  • LiberalArmyWife@xanga

The picture and the video made my night.

About the professor, though, according to the 911 tapes she never mentioned the "burglar" being AA, so I'm not sure this is an issue of race anymore. More like male pride. Just my thoughts. The idea of a post-racial America is still pretty ridiculous. As the wife of a white man and mother to a mulatta, I can guarantee you - race still matters.

  • snapeful@xanga

@canadianposer@xanga - HAHAHA! that's actually quite awesome.. lmao! i want it but then i'd get into all sorts of political trouble.

and when i hear yellow, i think of sir cadogan from HP "YELLOW BELLIED MONGROLS, DRIVE THEM OUT HARRY POTTER! THIEVES AND SCAVENGERS AND..." lmao. but it's still a teensy bit offensive because it's like whoa, so yellow skinned people are bad guys now, huh?! we gonna KICK YO BRITISH ASS

  • Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga

I've only heard of yellow when paired with "bellied". Otherwise, I would've answered like the white kid. Haha.

The Gates controversy shows that blacks are racist, too.

Racism has not gone away. It probably never will (that's not to say that we oughtn't try to get rid of it). There are still whites that hate everyone who doesn't look like them. There are tensions that are even stronger since Pres. Obama has become president. Decades ago, racism was systematic, especially against blacks. With few (highly localized) exceptions, that has been eradicated for decades. Now, though, those who've never been oppressed (especially not systematically) cry racism as soon as they decide to act like a jackass. Is it possible that, in a different situation (or, had Gates not been a complete jackass) this event could have been dubbed as institutional racism? Sure, but this was certainly not the case.

Racism is almost entirely based on a false set of pretenses or presuppositions. In fact, racism is a form of prejudice (that is, judging someone or something based on stereotypes or expectations that are not necessarily true). So, in the Gates case, it becomes abundantly clear that the racism employed was actually the reverse of what some would expect. That is, Gates assumed he was being targeted because he is black (which, as the facts show, is not the case), and President Obama assumed likewise. Therefore, the racism is shown on their parts: that is, the assumed that the white police officer was acting a certain way based on their race, not on the actual context of the situation.

So, yes, racism is alive and well. And, often, it's not what we expect it to be.

i dont agree that we're in america and our language is only english!!!!

there were 2 boys on the bus speaking in their mother tongue (bengali or arabic) and the kid from behind told them to speak english cuz this is america. i was like wtf we're all learning to speak a foreign language in school dont we? that kid has to be taking a foreign language class in order to graduate high school. it's ironic that he tells them to speak english on the other hand he needs to speak spanish in order to pass his oral exam.

so whats wrong with speaking another language in america? THIS is america!!!! It's a diverse place. and i know some people might say go back to china! go back to ur own counrty. if you cant accept others' diversity then leave cuz this is america duh!

  • thehighbreed@xanga

you cant help but judge people...
but it's horrible to have skin color be the determining fact when judging someone.
