In a month my gym membership will expire. I need to decide if I want to pay the 3 digit annual membership fee again. The past year working out has not been hugely successful for me.
I'm curious how many people
actually go to a gym and exercise to get
in shape. I know of people with gym membership who never go. I know of people who keep saying they need to go, but never do. I know of people who go and then stop going almost simultaneously. But then there are the ones who you always see when you go.
Do you go? and what is your age? (Is there a limit?) What has your experience been like?
I am asking because I have realized a discrepancy. People are not exactly honest. I saw this one guy last year.
"I work very hard, and eat protein"
Recently I saw him again. I couldn't bear to take his photo because that is just too weird (call me scaredy pants if you will), so instead I am going to say he looked
like this:
"I don't eat steroids. Are you accusing me?!!"
After working out you supposedly get younger, more toned, and your genitals get enormous.
*disclaimer: they are not the same people. do your research because steroids will not make your genitals bigger.
What keeps you motivated to keep going? What are your
real reasons for going to the gym?

I don't. Workout DVDs and a home weight machine work just as well and save you money in the long run.
I have a gym membership... I just need to go.Â
For the girls, my health is just a side effect.
For real though, I used to go 2-3 times a week when I was in school (part of our fees.) Over summer though I don't have access to it so I got lazy and gained weight (or loss of muscle mass, FML.) I don't feel like paying another monthly fee for it. So I'll just wait until school starts up again.
I hit the weightroom to strengthen muscles I don't use when running - so I am less prone to injury. This summer I spend 3 days a week, but during the school year I spend about 4 days a week (though shorter times b/c they are after runs).
I go to the gym at my university. Unfortunately this limits me to only being allowed while Im taking classes for so working out for the rest of the summer.
I know this sounds horrible but I dont go to the gym for my health, it's so I can lose weight.
I mean sure, health is a reason... Im scared that one day I'll have a heart attack with all this fat. But it's not the main reason.
it's vain... but I'm tired of being the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). For once I want guys to be flirting with me and calling me and seeing me as a potential girlfriend.
yeah when I had the gym this past year at my school i was so excited. I went every single day. I am not exaggerating the least bit. and even before i won a thre emonth membership to the MAC..and went every single day...
what keeps me movtivated to go as much as do?? to look good. I am a very very VERY vain person. looks mean a lot to me. And I must feel thin and look good in my clothes to feel beautiful....if not I feel "fat" and gross and dont want to go out and leave the house...like back in HS i would actually miss days of school and fake sick because I felt fat....yeah. so i told myself i never want to have days like that ever again..so working everyday and gymmin it has been my promise to myself. ive been working out everyday with one day of rest for abouttt four yrs now....
so losing wieght and looking good and feeling good about myself when I go out is the reason i work out...the health benefits are just a bonus.
@MangoWOW@xanga - hahaha thats exactly the reason i work out. to feel good about myself so when i walk into a room all the guys stare...and because ive had success with it for the past couple yrs..i wanna keep it up..so working out everyday is what i doo.....its a must...never an option.
I do. It's just making myself get to the gym that's the hard part (getting ready, actually leaving etc etc)
I'm 15 so I need an adult accompaniment :c
I go 4-5 days a week to weight lift, and workout 6 days a week. I train to have better health, strength, and mostly to be a better Karate practitioner. I also do it to keep weight off.
Also, I just enjoy it! I love the challenge and satisfaction of completing a tough session.
Okay that bottom picture is really gross lol
I don't go to the gym, but I work out at home
may i just say something, both pics are so disturbing. i go to the gym and about 5 times per week. but i never want to look like either of the pics above. gross.
my membership is free cuz i work at the gym. if i didn't have a free membership though i'd probably just use the money and get a home gym. i workout because i love it. i like to challenge myself and after i put together a really hard workout i try it just to see if i can do it. plus i'd hate to be out of shape or overweight because my family history isn't the best and i wanna live a good quality life.
@abilene_piper_lg@xanga - No space, any suggestions around that other than going to a gym?
@LifeStar1622@xanga - I know that feeling too well. First month is like you pump yourself up, but then you start to dwindle. Need motivation. Is that the case for you?
@AznFier@xanga - Cool for honesty.
@JoeytheGenie@xanga - Interesting. I usually hit the gym less when school is in session. Do you find gyming helping your studies?
@MangoWOW@xanga - Wow, that acronym is mean. Being skinny as a guy can be just as much an issue.
@kieri126@xanga - I hear vain a lot. I wonder if looking good has to necessitate vainness. Perhaps I lack the motivation there because I don't care for my looks as much. I guess vainness has good qualities :) Thanks for your HS insight too.
@kimtendo@xanga - Imo, that is young. If you keep it up, by age 20 you should have a formidable body. Goodluck to you.
@FOXHOUND_HQ@xanga - @C_UNIT42@xanga - Anything specific that keeps you focus and motivated? Do you ever find yourself forcing you to go?
@imakeyoufree1@xanga - @mewithoutu77@xanga - The guy I saw was really ridiculous, no joke. Swing by the gym and you might know what I'm talking about.
i go to the gym 6-7 times a week.
i'll admit that i'm vain and love the good shape the gym keeps me in. however, another HUGE motivator for me is the fact that i actually look forward to going to the gym every day.
why?
i take fun classes at the gym, such as zumba, hip-hop, and spinning. i love the people in the classes. they are so nice and inspiring.
the treadmill...not so fun. the endorphin rush afterward keeps me doing it.
weight-training...i LOVE the male eye candy in the weight room, and love feeling strong when i lift.
the gym also keeps me motivated to stick to healthy eating, because i NEED healthy foods to fuel my workouts, not to mention that i don't wanna undo my hard work with chips and cookies.
there are obviously plenty of other health benefits to working out...basically i LOVE it! :)
keep trying different stuff there. you may fall in love with it.
@leadheavy@xanga - I'm motivated by the fact that the effort I make will pay off in the long run. But yes, there will always be times where I force myself to go. That's called self-discipline. Its all about how bad you want the results. It's always best to take the high-ground when debating things like this. In the words of an Olympic athlete I met recently. "It's not like you're going to say 'I wish I hadn't done that.'" If you're debating whether to go or not.
Even if I force myself to go, by the end of the workout, I'm always glad I took the time to train.
Your body always wants to take the easy path, you have to force it to take the hard, narrow path. Make your body work for you, don't work for your body.
oh and i forgot to add...of course some days i feel tired and lazy. when you're feeling that way just get up and GO. tell yourself you can do an easy workout if you want, just to get yourself to go. you'll thank yourself afterward. just know that it IS good to take off 1-2 days a week (although i'm SO addicted that i only take off 0 or 1), so don't feel guilty about that :)
@leadheavy@xanga - honestly if anything, my schedule this summer is heavier than my schedule last year, take my advice and don't ever take both physics + law courses in the summer; summer school is not easy. But then I have IB next year..shudder.
But to answer your question, I spend more time during the school year b/c a) I have a weightroom buddy to spot for me b) I don't tend to race in the summer so there is not that much need for the extra strengthening c) exercise does help me think better
@leadheavy@xanga - I'm kinda afraid to run into someone like that lol XP
@choosingausernameishard@xanga - 1 day off is always good to give your body rest. I know of professional level athletes that take a day off.
YEAH! It's all about having the self-discipline to go even when you feel lazy or tired.
i have to workout. I've been slipping lately because I just can't get there right now. But I'm dieting and need to lose 15 pounds so it's a must.
I'm a fresher and I go to the gym a few times a week unless I have exams. But I go because I need to for my sport.
I not only go to the gym to workout, I also work there. In my experience, the people who are the regulars look at least 10 years younger than they are. I am constantly shocked when I find out that so&so who takes water aerobics three times a week just turned 83, and the woman in the begin-to-swim class turned 79, and the dude that plays handball (Handball!! That sport is insane!) every day will be 96 soon. Go to the gym because it will not only give you more energy and a better quality of life, but also because you will look and feel younger.
EW nasty pictures! I live in a community where we have to pay community dues every month that include the gym, so I go there occasionally. I have phases where I will go almost everyday, then for some reason, I lose interest or motivation and don't go for a few weeks or months. It's a strange cycle.
I actually have a proper gym at home. So I go there about 3-4 times a week.
i go cause there is a gym at my university. so its provided in our tuition so why not use it. and a motivation is when i feel like i am actually sweating off and becoming active. having gym buddies also is a motivation. but if there wasnt' someone that i go with daily, i dont know if ill be motivated to go in all honesty. so try going with someone. my experience has been productive, even though im not at school now, im not as productive. but i can't wait to go back to school to start being active again.
