, I decided to write about another pose we see popping up all over international culture: the Peace sign.
Often seen as a Japanese stereotype, the peace sign has not seeped into our culture, but it's
returned!
Everyone's three favorite things: FOX, American Idol, and Miley Cyrus!A friend of mine spent last summer in Japan. Not speaking any Japanese, he took a job as the superintendent of an apartment building. I don't get it either.
Anyways, he asked a few of his Japanese friends why they always made the peace sign in pictures. They told him that the person they were mimicking was none other than
John Lennon:Totally fascinating, right? It makes sense, too. When you find out things like this, you realize that maybe John Lennon was right when he said that
little comment about Jesus...

Japan does overkill it a bit. I don't think it's a bad pose if you only use one hand and do it in moderation.
HIPPIES! i just do it because i dont know what else to do with my hands in some pictures. Someone my arms just feel awkwardly there in a photo.
Asians will always want to use it in pictures. My mom does it all the time . . . I don't, though.
I think its okay if you're only doing it like miley cyrus, but if you overdo it in every damn picture then it gets annoying.
Peace sign pose is annoying!
Wasn't it originally the sign for victory?
I do it very rarely in pictures. The peace sign is kinda annoying now.
@KevtheMoron@xanga - That's what I thought, too.
asians do it 'cause it's cute !
or those japanese tourists !
asians lol
I think the peace sign is overrated...
Whoa! I did not know that!
I don't know if anyones ever noticed this, but Miley Cyrus was a double threat. For awhile, she was making the peace sign-kissy pose in a lot of pictures. She would do this on numerous "red-carpet" occassions and it annoyed me to no end.
When i was in New York a couple months ago a japanese guy (we asked where he was from) came up to my sister and I and asked if we could take his picture and he posed in front of time square with a peace sign. It was so cute because he was alone.
I personally think it's adorable. ^_^ I like doing it, it makes me feel young and cute.
Considering my youthful community of Asians, we still do the peace sign..
..just in front of our mouths while sticking our tongue out.
haaa oh i am soo guilty of doing that pose lol but its kinda down right overdonee
I'm not even sure why I do it sometimes. I accidently do it backwards sometimes which means I am really flicking people off... Oops.
@HiArianne@xanga - Hahaha, nice.
It's more effective if you throw them up in the air like Fatboy Slim. Haha!
I've been using it for a while. I think it's fun, but I don't do it all of the time.
@HiArianne@xanga - lmfaoo. so true
yes the peace sign, the index and middle finger raised in hope has been around and lately maybe overused. it is not to be confused with the peace symbol. in ww2 it was the sign for victory. in england if the hand is turned with the palm facing inward is considered a crude expression. the 2 finger "peace sign" has been around since the 1960's and was considered the salute for peace with anti war demomstrators.
originally the "peace symbol" was for "nuclear disarmament" and depicts the semaphore "n" and "d" and has been around since the late 1950's.
of course thsi is more info than anyone wanted to know. lol
peace.
@HiArianne@xanga - lol
omg thats so cool :]
