Decent beer, Dos Equis, has been running a bunch of commercials lately featuring "The Most Interesting Man In The World" that are, much like the beer itself, mediocre.
Yet these commercials seemingly have a ton of buzz. This is a perfect example of a company tricking thousands of people with a marketing scheme and I'd be more angry if I wasn't so impressed that they got everyone to fall for it.
What they did itself wasn't difficult, per se, but usually some one will call them out on it. I mean look at how worshiped the Jonas Brothers are by tweens across America and even they've been called out again and again for making awful music and wearing purity rings as a pretense to sell sex to young girls. Russell Brand and South Park have been all over it.
The thing with "The Most Interesting Man In The World" is that nobody heard of it until they heard that everybody was talking about it.
Let me explain, further. Any mention of it in a blog or a magazine, any segment that mentions it on a television show always introduces it as "the thing everyone is talking about it." But no one was talking about it until there were these reports that its "the thing everyone is talking about." I heard that it was "the thing everyone is talking about" about two months before I ever even saw a commercial.
What this says is that Dos Equis sent out press releases and e-mails to again and again calling it "the commercial everyone is talking about" and everyone bought it and reprinted it. It's amazing that anyone could pull something like this off in this day and age. With so many people being so media savvy and everyone having a voice, it just boggles my mind that I haven't seen anyone poit out the fact that a company managed to completely manufacture hype without anyone questioning it.
Have you seen the commercial in question? Have you been one of these people talking about it?

I don't even drink, but these commercials are hilarious! He is truly one of the great men of our day.
That was the first time I had seen it.
And it wasn't very good at all.
What's going to be funny is when everyone, myself included, starts talking about it in the comments section of this post.
I think these are some of the funniest commercials I've seen in a long time. Very intriguing, to say the least. :)
Hahahahah.
I haven't seen those commercials, and I'm not interested in seeing them.
i agree i've never seen that before and it wasn't intresting at all
I didn't know everyone was talking about it, but I love the commercials. There was another series of commercials for an alcohol, similar to these. Can't recall, but they were absolutely hilarious, these are equally funny, thus my appreciation for them.
I thought this was a repost. Haha.
When I first saw it... all I could think of was.. Chuck Norris.
So yeah in a way it is talked about everywhere.
I say Chuck Norris star in their commercials. I usually laugh when i see those commercials anyway.
Never seen the commercial but that's the way things go in the media. You have to establish a brand and with media saturation of other products at an all time high, it's hard to break into the public consciousness without some help from that damning media that is keeping you from getting exposure in the first place.
PR firms are incredible places. They may not be telling the truth all the time about the product (often times, not as their own doing, but what the company tells them) but they do the job and do it well. It's a subtle blend of marketing, psychology and the ability to exploit the media in the way that works best for them, and it works well.
I've never seen the commercials, but I also hardly ever watch TV.
well, they've done what they were intended to do - get people to talk about this mythical "Most Interesting Man" and the beer he shills for. Someone walks into a beer store, perhaps wanting to try something other than "the regular", and suddenly the eye falls on ... and WHAM-o! Another six-pack (or case) out the door! That IS the point. LOL
I haven't talked about it. But I think they're kinda catchy, and funny.
I've seen it before, but I haven't talked about it.
Most of them are hilariously stupid.
"he can speak french in russian"
i dont know what commercial that is from but i think it's from the same company..
figures it would be you to say something about my beer. Don't be mad you cannot be as witty as these commercials sir. Go back to your Corona that taste like crap. Dos Equis is THE Mexican beer.
