  • Why Women Still Aren't Funny

Do you agree with him or no?

I can see his point of view when it comes to the necessity to be funny. As he states men have more of a requirement to make a girl laugh then a girl does to make a guy laugh.

Women like a guy that can make them laugh. Women are automatically a little defensive when they first meet a guy. To help let their guard down and ease them into liking the guy more, it's important that a man can make her laugh. It gives them a more positive point of view on the guy. He doesn't need to be a comedian, but he needs to at least have a sense of comedic wit and / or sarcasm. Something that will get a laugh out of her or make her giggle.

That's not so true of men. As Hitchens says, men are already attracted to her based on her looks and actions. If anything, a guy is looking for a girl with a sense of humor that matches the kind of humor he can let off. A sense of humor is not the same thing as the ability to make guys laugh.

A sense of humor is more like taking it in, laughing at something. Whereas making her laugh is more like putting it out. In a way it sort of represents the sexual roles that males and females play. Men put it out and women take it in.

That said many women have made me laugh and there are several female comedians I find funny. But he's right. That's not something I look for in a female. A female that acts more like a comedian does have a certain sense of masculinity to them. I've never said to myself "she's funny, I'm so attracted to her". Looking back I've never been attracted to any of the female comedians I've seen. If I was, it wasn't because they were funny, it was because they were good looking.

So I think to some degree he's right. Even though the headline doesn't really fit, since some women really are funny.

i dont think girls have to be funny lol i mean yeah i guess it's a plus but i knwo some pretty boring men out there as well

  • devilsbane@xanga

i agree i never been attracted to a funny woman either

My god, I never knew how obnoxious Christopher Hitchens was. His entire
demeanor in that video betrays some sort of misogyny... or maybe it's
just some ingrained smug superiority complex that he's just currently
projecting at women who 'can't read' and are 'annoying, irritating'
blah blah blah.... Jesus Christ. I agreed with him/this post and I
still wanted to smack him in the face. What a fucking bitch.

  • C0ll33Ncorps@xanga

Well. I've never been attracted to a man because he's smart.
Does this mean there are men aren't smart?

Of course not. It doesn't even mean I've never been attracted to a smart man.  It just means it's never been what initially caught my eye. I know plenty of smart guys, just like I know plenty of hilarious women.

Just listen to this guy talk.  It sounds like he doesn't really think anything is funny.
I understand his point, but the headline is still false.

  • PenaltyLife@xanga

wow, that guy is such an asshole. maybe his points that he brings up are good, but he's still an asshole. hard to listen to.

@C0ll33Ncorps@xanga - you have a great point that has apparently eluded men when they talk about women's senses of humor.

  • kaytemptation@xanga

Yeah, headline doesn't fit but I agree the point he was "trying" to make.

  • ELCIINE@xanga

I like to be funny. ._. I'm sure a ton of other girls do too.

When you meet a boring guy, don't you have to be funny to balance it out? Haha. :)

  • xenas_shortskirt@xanga

O.o So, wait, women can only be funny if it was a trait guys were attracted to?
But since guys apparently *aren't* attracted to funny girls... girls aren't considered funny?
    Weird logic.

I agree that there's a big difference between men and women when it comes to being funny. Men can get away with a lot more so that's why I think it seems more acceptable for the man to be the funny one. However, I love making people laugh and being funny. If that makes me seem more like a dude to you then so be it. Because I sure as heck don't look like a dude, and all you have to do is not date me. I'm not going to shrivel up and die.

    Good post, though.
  • Imnotcrazyjustinsane@xanga

I can get pretty feminist nazi on a lot of things... but this is the one thing that I'll give on. Women aren't funny.
I mean, I can make people laugh, but most of the time, I'm just being sarcastic...

  • youaintjam@xanga

I think he's right that dudes need humor more than chicks, but I think a chick who can make me laugh earns a few points on her rating. Unless she starts off ugly, then she doesn't gain too many points.  Humor can turn a 6 into an 8 if she's funny enough.  Girls like Olivia Munn show that good looking women become HOT with some personality points.

  • Insomnia_Pickles_XtraTomato@xanga

idk i think being a little goofy and silly and odd is attractive to my bf. he's likely been with girls more physically pretty than me, but i love to see him laugh (for real) at my silly jokes lol

  • BranmacFeabhail@xanga

@no wonder christians hate him - if you knew anything about Christopher Hitchens, you would know that this is just who he is. He's a polemicist, antitheist and antireligious. He takes his cues from Enlightenment thinkers--secularism, humanism and reason.

He said this stuff to get a rise out of people, and he certainly got one out of you.

For the record, I think it's true. I've never been found attractive because I was funny or even smart, most of the time. Men are visual, they like what they see. If I happen to also be entertaining to listen to, then that's a plus in their books.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

It's true that if a guy can laugh, there is some instant attraction. I'm a bit of a comedian, but I'm defiantly not manly. :P

  • colormethespian@xanga

I'm a woman. I'm funny *nobody say looking or I shoot*. Therefore, women are funny. Problem solved - although I understand the point of Christopher's video *sort of, anyways*, the title is the one thing that I have to pick a bone with...I know it's just an attention grabber, and it's not anything that he said in his video...but it bothers me. Very misleading.

  • colormethespian@xanga
  • thehighbreed@xanga

hmm. humor isn't sexy, but sarah silverman sure is.

  • Neowind@xanga

You know, I think he's right. I'm attracted to women who I can make fun of.  Women who doesn't allow me to make a joke (not that they don't allow me, but you know when there's just certain people who you just don't have the mood to do so) are not that attractive to me...

And I've yet to met a funny girl, more or less the ones I meet are silly.. then I resort back to making fun of them.

  • LifeStar1622@xanga

    I crack jokes a lot but I'm not manly. I don't think.

  • xkthily@xanga

I'm not funny... I'm just very sarcastic and sometimes mean.. which some people mistaken me for being funny. haha

  • nylondare@xanga

obviously haven`t met me yet .

  • lolquack@xanga

Rofl. I'm a rather funny girl!! People always tell me to be a stand up comedian. But I don't like many female comedians for the fact is the try to hard.

I could hardly understand what that guy was saying, Sounded like he was chewing sand >.<
I know my boyfriend loves the fact that I am funny. I make him ROFL all the time.  & He loves it. As he can make me laugh so hard.

Maybe I am missing the point of this, but everything seems so contradicting.

  • lolquack@xanga
  • WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga

I think he's right, I can be funny in a clever or cute way, but never make anyone wet their pants from laughter.

And the female comedians he mentioned, aren't funny.

  • colormethespian@xanga

@lolquack@xanga - lol, thanks...btw, your name makes ME laugh. lolquack...that is quite original, I must say.
