  • Conan vs. Letterman

Conan "Coco" O'Brien has recently taken over the role of host of the Tonight Show. There were many worries about how he would transitioning to the earlier time slot. Things like what would have to be lost (we miss you, masturbating bear and pimpbot 5000!) and who would stick around (Yay Max Weinberg! La Bamba! Andy's back!) and so far things seem to be going over well. It's still a little bit in the awkward stage, but I think that's largely him getting used to the larger space.

However, all is not well in the Conezone. Viewers have been fleeing the Tonight Show to watch Letterman over at the Late Show instead. Why is this?

There are a few theories.  One is that all the olds who were watching Leno don't quite appreciate Conan's zany brand of humor (after all a segment called Twitter Tracker isn't exactly cross-generational humor). Another is that Conan simply isn't doing that well. This is either because his humor is too similar to what it was at 12:30 or not enough like it. There are others, but you can pretty much figure it out for yourselves.

The important thing is that the Late Show is getting its highest ratings since the late night wars of the 90s. Maybe Leno just resonated better than I thought (I still won't cede anything  positive critically to his show). It appears we're heading to a whole new era of who's better.

So, my mancouchaterians, who do you prefer: Conan or Letterman?
