  • Is Victoria's Secret that it is legally indecent?

Did you know that ever year, the FCC receives multiple indecency complaints about the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show...  from groups like the "American Family Association"?  They object because the FCC "places more restrictive standards on TV shows that run between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m" - and the Victoria's Secret aired at 9 pm in Central and Mountain Time.

Here's how the FCC defines indecency:

The FCC looks at three primary factors when analyzing broadcast material: (1) whether the description or depiction is explicit or graphic; (2) whether the material dwells on or repeats at length descriptions or depictions of sexual or excretory organs; and (3) whether the material appears to pander or is used to titillate or shock. No single factor is determinative.

Here are some pictures from the 2009 VS show - do you think these are close to the line of indecency?

Would you object if these shows aired at 9 pm on your television?

no. but then again, i don't have kids nor do i've a family.

i suppose i can understand why mothers and fathers would get upset if their kids were watching ladies in their panties, thongs and see through clothes on tv.

    xo

They're in underwear. Their vag's aren't hanging out, and they're not fucking each other. So where is the indecency really?

If parents don't want their kids seeing it, DON'T let them watch it. DUH. Parents have nobody but themselves to blame if their kids see something they find to be inappropriate.

  • n1colee@xanga

It's the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Do they seriously expect the girls to NOT wear lingerie?

"They're in underwear. Their vag's aren't hanging out, and they're not fucking each other. So where is the indecency really?"

    ^^ I agree.

Well, as a lesbian, I CERTAINLY don't find anything wrong with those wonderful shows.  Even if I try to think as a hard-core feminist, I can't find anything wrong.  Hell, those are beautiful women, with beautiful bodies, (with eating disorders, fake breasts, and all sorts of other stuff that makes them look a hell of a lot better than they may look in real life) showing off kick-ass underwear that I wouldn't in my life ever wear. (Not because I'm much larger than the models, but I'm fond of the practical.)

As for should it be on during prime time?  Hell, didn't they have that same argument over the Three Stooges, Three's Company, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and The Dukes of Hazzard?  To paraphrase Peter Griffin, if you let your kids morals be formed by a TV show, then you've got the problem. Yeah.

I don't see a problem with this airing when it does.

  • YossariansWingman@xanga

Maybe if the founders of the AFA focused more on pressuring parents to monitor what their children watch rather than trying to have it take off TV, we could all be happy.

  • mixtapesenmasse@xanga

    @YossariansWingman@xanga - exactly.

Also, I've seen many bikinis on television and otherwise that reveal more than this lingerie does, and I've never understood why one is considered indecent and the other is not.

Miss America Pagent contestants parade around in bikinis [that's on primetime, I believe], and so do other people in television/movies/real life, so why shouldn't these girls?

...Especially since these examples are much more fashionable and tasteful than some other lingerie and many bikinis I've seen.

  • kimtendo@xanga

Uh underwear is the same as bikinis, so would you keep your kids away from the beach and pool too?

  • LonerB@xanga

If you don't want your kids to watch a certain show on TV, you turn it off or switch the channel. Really simple, I guarantee it. Some people, honestly... *shrug*

  • iStephanieMarie@xanga

Pretty much every point the previous comments have made I agree with.

    It's called CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

    it's totally acceptable, pretty hot!

  • yourblondeness@xanga

if you don't pay attention to what your kids are watching, then it is YOUR FAULT. sorry.

  • BebePnai13@xanga

the meaning of the fashion show is for lingerie.. promoting underwear.. it's not like they're promoting porn or any type of sexual act...

they need to stop complaining because parents should watch what they're children see on TV.

  • turnyalightsdownlow@xanga

oh please. if you don't want little kids to see such things then don't let them watch it. it seems that simple really. everyone knows what Victoria's Secret is. the mere fact that you have pictures of the event shows that you took some time out of your day to beat your  beat to some VS model. if you don't want your kids to touch their little weenies then moniter what they're wearing.

  • buddy71@xanga

has anyone seen womens beach v-ball?  it is aired during the day and their "outfits" are much less than this.  but since it is sports, it must be ok?

you have programing guides to let you know what is gong to be aired, you have v-chips and parental controls.  you have channel selctions and the off button.  nobody is forcing you to watch the shows. if you dont want your kids to see something then you should take control.  your the parent, act like one.

  • cutesycharm@xanga

For public television, maybe. I don't think its any worse than a lot of things.

  • T0m03@xanga

Personally, I wouldn't object but if I had kids, we'd definitely be switching the channel.

  • causewehavealovesostrong@xanga

I think it's pretty sexy.  My mom had more problems with me watching Jerry Springer when I was younger.

  • taaru@xanga

Parents should be monitoring what their children watch.
Honestly, if my family and I are watching TV like we always do after dinner, I would get so embarrassed and feel weird if a victoria's secret fashion show came on. Sure, we would change the channel, but it would be awkward...
I still don't find anything wrong with it. It's the same thing as girls wearing bikinis at the beach.

  • Lynnjynh9315@xanga

9 pm is adult time- the kiddies' hour is now over.

  • songbird27@xanga

@YossariansWingman@xanga - I have young kids....and I completely agree with you.  It's ridiculous that parents would complain about it.

  • ROCKtheB0ATx@xanga

if you don't like it, dont watch it. simple as that.

  • thats_not_my_name@xanga

Indecent no but inappropriate for younger audience that is definitely still watching tv (probably unattended) at 9 pm.
I guess that's more of a parenting issue though...I know people whose kids not only have no bedtime but have a tv in their bedrooms as well. Clearly they are not the people complaining to the FCC. lol

  • RaquelHiggins005@xanga

LOL, not indecent at all. It's at 9:00, what would a little kid be doing watching tv at 9:00. There's worst things on tv, so those uptight parents need to get over it. I also want to point out the woman in the second picture. I don't mean the one that the focus is on, but the one who's backside we can see, wearing a thong. Now, she has a nice body but, she doesn't have much of an ass...which makes her in that underwear she's got on look stupid.
