  • Could you ever kill an animal?

Every dude from the ancient Greeks to Ernest Hemingway to Ted Nugent agrees: hunting is super manly. Regardless of our own personal opinions about hunting, there is certainly a popular conception that the ability to track, locate, and kill an animal reflects an epic degree of masculinity and manliness. Think about the images of hunters in pop culture:

John Locke, back before he was just the human vessel for that crazy evil immortal guy.

Teddy Roosevelt, with a frickin' elephant.

RIP Muldoon, who failed to "SHOOT HER!!!"

These are just three examples that immediately came to mind of famous, recognizable hunters.

I've often wondered if I have what it takes to hunt. On the one hand, tons of guys are conditioned to want to shoot things. On the other hand, we've evolved past much of our hunting instinct, replacing it with the role of "bread-winning" and providing financial support instead--over the past century, women, too, have begun to fill this role.

I'll be honest: knowing that I probably don't have the cajones to hunt makes me feel a little less masculine. But that shame doesn't really outweigh the fact that I'd probably hate myself if I did hunt.

What about you? Could you ever kill an animal?
