  • Short Shorts

While summer doesn't seem to have officially arrived, thankfully the glorious outfits associated have still manged to poke their heads out into the intermittent sun.  Ah yes, the glory of short shorts.  At a place like mancouch and on a planet called "Earth" you won't find any complaint about the above photo, well unless it is a jealous female or a longing male.  But sadly these are not the shorts shorts to which I refer.  Instead my topic for brief discussion is the fashionability (a word in my to be released dictionary) of short shorts on men.

Like most men out there I long wore shorts that went past my knees, for the purpose of both fashion and athletics.  Once I began running, I realized the glory of unobstructed and unimpeded leg motion that is split shorts,  the kind of shorts that have a three inch or smaller... inseam.  To wear these even while simply running invites gratuitous heckling (and the occasional cat call), but to step up to wearing them for everyday seems a dicey undertaking.

A quick and irrelevant disclaimer: I do not look like this girl when I am running, but it is a reason I like girls who run (sorry no photos of me in short shorts for the time being, some people might recently have eaten or imbibed heavily before reading this post).

Back to the point at hand, when you throw in the soft crepe liner, which eliminates the need for underwear, I find myself wishing I wore nothing but short shorts frequently.  Now I'm pretty comfortable with myself, in spite of the fact that I have some of the hairiest legs known to man, but sometimes I also consider that you must think about the children and the potential trauma you might inflict.

In order to be socially acceptable, most fashion trends must be run through the celebrity grinder so herein lie my offerings.
    Cristiano Ronaldo:

Considered one of, if not the best, footballer (soccer player) on the planet, he's also widely regarded as a stud. If you saw the man above, what would you say?

    Ed Westwick:

You (and I) know this actor for his starring role as bad boy Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl.  I've seen his quirky and classical on set fashion mimicked on the streets of Manhattan, but what say you to his street attire?

So dear interweb inhabitants, I ask you, short shorts this summer?

the rugby team at my school lives in short shorts. its disgusting.

  • Kevin_is_a_pirate@xanga

I wore shorts shorts in a pool they were really tight jeans once and I cut them and they got really tight.

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

I think I've DEFINITELY made my opinion known on this issue. Not only yes, but HELL YES.

I like my legs. I'm going to flaunt them. Apparently women like my legs too, as I get complements on them pretty much continuously. I even have women who ask to feel of my legs. It's quite flattering. The guff I get is from guys. Oh well, their opinion really doesn't matter. I'm apparently doing something right
  • PenaltyLife@xanga

both of those shorts seem like they're the natural length they should be to me.

i'm sorry, but wearing half-pants is not wearing shorts. and they are incredibly unflattering.

I LOVE SHORT SHORTS ON GUYS. and i'm not afraid to say it!!!!

  • john@xanga

I forgive you, because of the first two pictures you posted (thanks btw).

  • jupiter312@xanga

The first picture is very nice.  I'm not a fan of men in short shorts.  It's just awkward looking.

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

@PenaltyLife@xanga - Oh you so rock my world. Hahaha. Apparently if you are in a minority you aren't in a very big one.

I will defend this until I die. If any of you had the balls to look back some 30 to 40 years, you'd quickly find that these were the norm back in that era. When these "half pants" as my friend calls them came on the scene, they weren't accepted for awhile either, so you know, choose your battle and DON'T HOLD DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Haha now I have am image of Paulie Bleaker running in Juno with his little short shorts. I don't think short shorts are bad on men. While the shortest can be saved for running, a decent length for the everyday is fine with me.

  • arenasa@xanga

Men in short shorts is a turn-off.

Women, however, are quite sexy when they wear short shorts.

  • tiffy_momma_of2@xanga

i dont understand when guys wear shorts half way down their calf and socks that go up to their knee's. Why not just wear pants???

Also there are some guys and women who i would never want to see in short shorts or who make you go temp. blind when you see them.

  • turnyalightsdownlow@xanga

@PenaltyLife@xanga - never heard that from a girl before but hey this is Xanga =)

i must disagree and say i hate short shorts on guys. yes it's a double standard but that's just life. i also don't like you wearing flip flops. your feet are gross and i dont want to see them. & please dont wear a man thong

  • jesuismir@xanga

Short shorts for summer ONLY?! 365 (or 366) days a year, baby!!

  • jesuismir@xanga

    @tiffy_momma_of2@xanga -

"i dont understand when guys wear shorts
half way down their calf and socks that go up to their knee's. Why not
    just wear pants???"

AMEN!!! They are long enough to be pants. SRLY!

  • PenaltyLife@xanga

    @turnyalightsdownlow@xanga - i don't think it's a double-standard. it's just your opinion!

it's the wrong opinion, but still.... (hahaha jk. :P)

  • beforedawn@xanga

sorry.. havent yet made it past first two pics....what is this about?

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

@jesuismir@xanga - Haha. I like my legs, but not enough to bare them in freezing temperatures.

  • nolan_kun@xanga

Yeah I love the short shorts on women.. but men?  I am pretty conservative and only wear shorts at the pool.  And they are boardshorts.  To see a man in shorts that short makes me think three things.

    1. Gay
    2. Euro
    3. Most likely both.

What is with euros and their femininity?  Damn if they're not great soccer players but the way they carry themselves as man is laughable at best.  Nothing beats the Roxy glasses they wear, either.

  • ElusiveSoul@xanga

It depends on the legs, really. If a guy is athletic and trim enough, I say "Sure, flaunt what you've got!" but seeing larger men squeeze into short shorts is kind of uncomfortable and awkward (and the same thing goes for women, so that isn't a double-standard). Everyone has the right to be comfortable in the summer time, but if anyone's going to put their body out on display, they should make the effort to accomodate their figure accordingly. :P

  • FallenReign@xanga

To be honest, I really hate short shorts on men. I mean, I'm only an inch or two short of six feet tall and I have nice legs, so why shouldn't I wear them? But I'm a sixteen year old girl, not a grown man. But that's just me and my little ol' opinion.

Yes, I guess it's a double standard, but still. It is what it is.

  • mistersoulja@xanga

    Ronaldo shaves his legs...

  • FallenReign@xanga

@turnyalightsdownlow@xanga - your comment made me smile, and I agree completely :]

  • TheUnbearableLightnessofPeeing@xanga

what was the topic again? I was busy scrutinizing the first 2 pictures for umm photographic errors...

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

@mistersoulja@xanga - You don't know that for a fact. Some people just don't have leg hair. A middle-aged man who used to live in Abilene (got killed a few years back) I don't think shaved and he had glass-smooth legs (and for a 48 year old man, he had some of the best legs I've ever seen.......)

  • xjadersx@xanga

@abilene_piper_lg@xanga - You go man! Ahaha. Show off those sexy legs. If women all over are doing it then you can too!

I will say what I have said for all short short articles, I don't like them on either males or females. About 4 inches above the knee is all I like to see. Save it for the beach/bedroom I think. That's where the eye candy should be. I am not a jealous female, I like to see females skin. But in public, seeing the ass cheeks makes me gag. It is not attractive to me. It seems very disrespectful to themselves, and to others who don't want to see that. I know a lot of guys who have said they like a girl who doesn't flaunt it all, because then it leaves you guessing.

If I had a girl friend I wouldn't want her showing her ass. And I would not like my boyfriend to wear short shorts either. A little above the knee is fine.

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

    Here's an analogy I use:

Men are discriminated against when it comes to "fashion freedom" about as badly as atheists are discriminated against in the United States. Since I am both a practitioner of fashion freedom (kilts and short shorts) and and atheist, well, let's just say I know from experience.

Nonetheless, knee-length shorts don't cut it in Texas heat.
