star trek is the only one with 43 years of shows, movies, books, and everything else?

@harmonyminusmelody@xanga - All that plus it's one of, if not THE only show from the 60s to show minorities & Russians in a positive light. Plus they had mobile communication, desktop computers & other technology a good 20 years before it was made in the real world.

Star Trek has the hard science and wins on the technical aspect, but Star Wars wins hands down in the artistic category. Discounting the piles of fail that were Episodes 1-3, the original trilogy is seriously some of the most epic storytelling ever captured on film.

I used to say that if the two went head to head that Star Wars would win until the new Star Trek movie came out. Being able to destroy things by creating a black hole is just simply not fair. You'd have to reach into the Expanded Universe to find weapons to counter that in Star Wars.

the difference is clear, just because you can't tell the differences.

Ah, the unsatisfied Trek vs. Wars debate.

    1. Star Trek was first, it aired in 1966, whilst Star Wars was created during the 70s.

    2. Star Trek was originally a series. They just decided to make films based on the series later on. Star Wars: films. They just decided to make series based on it later on (i.e. Clone Wars)

    3. Star Trek's main theme is space exploration, as said by the opening credits of the original series - to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations (the fighting is just collateral damage caused by angry/mean aliens or people). Star Wars is basically war (as derived from the title).

    4. Star Trek was the pioneer for modern technology and science - hello, communicators = cellphones, voice activated computers are already used today, etc.

    5. WEAPONS - light saber, Star wars; Phaser, Star Trek.

    6. Star Trek can relate more to humans and the Planet Earth and its issues than Star Wars, which didn't have anything to do with the planet Earth (as it was in a galaxy far, far away). For example, Starfleet is based on Earth, and the episodes and films have tackled human issues such as racism (the original series was set in the 60s, and the Enterprise already had a multi-racial crew! Plus, Captain Kirk and Uhura performed TV's first interracial kiss), religion, communism (Chekov in the film Star Trek: The Voyage Home, where he can be seen in the streets of 1980s San Francisco saying "Can anybody tell me where the nuclear wessels (vessels) are?"

    7. the Force does not exist in Star Trek. (Unless you're a Thalossian or an extremely powerful Vulcan that can telepathically move objects)

    8. Star Trek is more scientifically sound and relevant (It first became popular among engineering students)

    9. Star Wars has better effects, excluding the new Trek movie.

    10. Star Trek is more...spontaneous. Most of them speak casually, and there is room for humour and jokes, unlike in Star Wars, where everyone's sort of...archaic and concise.

    11. Star Trek's fans have a name: Trekkies or Trekkers (still debated, but Gene Rodenberry says it's Trekkie). Star Wars fans are simply called Star Wars fans.

    12. Klingons and Vulcans have whole dictionaries, and some really hardcore fans can actually speak their languages.

    13. Star Wars has a lot more androids.

    14. Obama likes Star Trek.

    15. Trek is more for the older generation, people of around 30 - 50 yrs., whilst Star Wars is more for people under 30 (and I guess the people under 30 can't really tolerate the special effects, or lack thereof, in Star Trek)

    16. Gene Rodenberry: creator of Trek; George Lucas: Star Wars.

Yes, I am a Trekkie. And I have also watched all Star Wars films and I watch Clone Wars with my little brother.*note: the age generalization in number 15 doesn't apply to me. I am 16 years old. And no, I didn't start liking it because of the new movie. I've had to search far and wide for old episodes.Live long and prosper.

@bootifool_footibool@xanga - i'd have to disagree with you on the age group part. star trek is for all age group, it's just that younger people never give it a chance. when i was in middle school i used to make fun of star trek and people who liked it, but i had never seen it. so one day i sat down to watch how stupid it was... and i fell in love. i've been a fan for over half a decade.

also, the special effects thing is off too. of course, since enterprise is more recent, its special effects are pretty good, but my favorite special effects are in DS9. seriously, in the episode sacrifice of angels where the miranda class vessel gets a phaser through its saucer section? awesome. i would say that trek movies and shows have always been on the cutting edge of special effects during their time periods.

i just love sci fi. basically all sci fi. is there something wrong with that? I love Star Trek (all the series!), Star Wars, Stargate (both series, and probably the upcoming one!), Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, etc.....seriously...am I the only one? Nerd-dom is too specific these days I suppose.

  • Jack_Hawksmoor@xanga

As a bonafide nerd, I think it's preposterous that someone could  get the two mixed up. I'll make it easy for you, kid.

Star Wars = Light sabers, the Force, the Dark Side, and the whole "I am your father" shtick.

Star Trek = Klingons, Warp powered star ships, and the occasional intergalactic shagging from Captain James T. Kirk.

Which one is better? It all depends on who has the John Williams score. Well, then.

I believe I just cracked the case, but I love them equally. If one could combine the two, you'd have nerd-gasms out the wazoo.

  • Bluekiller2025@xanga

Look they are both awesome.  Why not love both?  I do. Makes life a hell of a lot easier.

  • bootifool_footibool@xanga

@harmonyminusmelody@xanga - sorry, I probably phrased my point wrong, but yes, I meant to say that younger people don't like it much because of the unsophisticated special effects that they would expect from a sci-fi series.

and the special effects part, I was pertaining to the original series. Sorry, I'm a TOS purist, and I don't really consider the rest to be "Star Trek" unless they have the original characters.
