I think it's safe to say that, so far, the Summer 2009 movie season has paled in comparison to its predecessor. Last year was rife with huge blockbuster movies, from
Wall-E to
The X-Files: I Want to Believe to
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (I was shocked with how damn good it was). While each of those movies was a big deal in its own right, Summer 2008 was dominated by the superheroes:
Iron Man kicked off a series of superhero flicks that ranged from the ridiculous (
Wanted) to the sublime (
The Dark Knight). Claiming the biggest opening weekend in history, not to mention setting
a long list of other records, The Dark Knight holds firmly to its prestigious (get it?) honor as the biggest movie ever.
VS
Which brings us to this summer. So far, not great.
Star Trek was truly excellent, garnering Oscar talk following the
decision to increase the number of Best Picture contenders to 10.
Up was pretty good, and
Wolverine straight-up blew.
July is the month for summer blockbusters, usually dominated by the 4th of July weekend releases (which are usually dominated by Will
"Mr. July" Smith). Looking at the upcoming releases for the month, I can't help but feel a
tiny bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong: there is definitely cause for excitement:
Public Enemies,
BrĂ¼no,
Harry Potter,
Funny People.
Here are two questions I'm wondering about: First, how well do you think these movies will do? And second, which are you most excited to see? Check
here for a full list of upcoming movies.

I like THE DARK KINGHT more ...
Probably Public Enemies.
Harry Potter!
Personally, I think that The Dark Knight was the last truely great movie to come out in theaters. Nothing incredibly amazing has come out ever since (in my opinion). Though, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that Harry Potter will be awesome.
Funny People.
Harry Potter. *LOL* I have been waiting forever for it....*yes, I am a huge nerd*
Does Transformers count as a summer movie? Because I choose that one. And Harry Potter. Public Enemies looks good too.
Public Enemies and Bruno, in that order. How can you resist "the most important movie to star a gay Austrian since Terminator 2"?
Public Enemies; many scenes were shot in my hometown.
most excited for the hangover, harry potter and transformers, THIS summer. last summer i was extremely stoked for the dark knight because i knew heath would be phenomenal.
public enemies!
Harry Potter, hands down.
The rest seem retarded.
I'm soooo pumped for Harry Potter!! It's taken sooo long for it to come out! I'm going crazy!
Harry Potter will be immensely popular, of course.
500 Days of Summer! That's about the only one left I want to see this summer.
This summer is going to be dry... very dry. But even summer ends.
Harry Potter has been steadily declining- but it's not at rock bottom yet. I'm sure it will be good. 2012, however, just looks plain awesome. Let's be honest: we all know Emmerich loves to destroy landmarks- but even this is overboard! And then, of course, we have New Moon- love it or hate it, it's going to be big....
But yeah, I think I'm more excited for 2009 games than I am movies.
Maybe Bruno out of all of them.
@GodArt@xanga - Ditto! Me too! Can't wait to see it when it comes out!
Public Enemies, without a doubt.
It's the first blockbuster in over a year that has me excited to go to the cinema.
im REALLY looking forward 2 HP6!!!!!!!
bruno i think 'LL do good, but as for the others...
THY WNT STAND A CHANCE AGAINST HP6!!!!!!
HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!
HBP! It's such bull shit that they moved it from October to July.
HARRY POTTER!
this actually angers me you overlooked a great movie that just came out. Transformers 2 came out on wednesday and blew me away. In other people's opinions it was better than the dark knight and i'm having trouble not agreeing with them. It is a must see regardless of whether or not you saw the first one there is a lot to appreciate about that movie, but still to come this year that i am excited for, public enemies, 9, and G.I. Joe. They all look very promising but transformers is award worthy ten times over seriously everyone who hasn't see it do so and if you have well go see it again i'm going again in a week.
Holy shit. I CAN'T WAIT FOR HP6!!!!!
I hope Bruno will be good because i want to go see it with friends lol
