Death Note, the anime series
Okay, if you are an anime fan, then you are probably familiar with the series Death Note.
Well, they also made Death Note the movie trilogy and it is awesome! There are some versions that are English dubbed but I prefer subtitles since the original voices are so much better and none of the emotions or intonations get lost in the translation.
The brief summary for those who don't know the anime series: a young man named Light Yagami is a college student whose dream is to become a policeman. He resents corruption, crime, and lack of justice. One of those nights he comes across a black notebook that has the words Death Note on it. Upon opening it, he sees the instructions that read: "Any human whose name is written in this book shall die."
Of course, he is beyond skeptical but then he tries it and what do you know! It's true! Soon enough Light becomes known as Kira (from Japanese "killer"); he is considered a new God of Justice since a hell of a lot of criminals are dying throughout the world from something as trivial as heart attacks. Soon enough the high authorities become quite interested in the whole phenomena and from their point of view Kira is nothing but a vile serial killer.
A mysterious investigator who calls himself L becomes involved in the process and soon enough it's a battle of two masterminds.
The story is great, the cast is brilliant (Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light; Ken'ichi Matsuyama as L), and the directing is superb. Even if you are not a fan of Japanese movies, watch this trilogy - the twists and the great acting won't leave you disappointed.
Mancouch says: This sounds kind of awesome. We definitely want to cover more Japanese anime and gangster movies, so send in reviews if ya got 'em!

Deathnote is a really interesting series. Â
I have LOVED "Death Note" since, well, it came out! It's awesome.
Why is this on Mancouch? I thought Manchouch men would rather watch football or something rather than anime
w/e that anime is pwnage :], I don't watch it but a lot of my friends do :P
love death note, tis teh awesomeness
i loved it ^__^
death note is awesome. i only saw the first movie, but i want to see the others.
Death Note is the first manga I ever read. It didn't disappoint by a longshot, and to this day remains one of my favourite animes, second to only DBZ. And I agree, the movies for once managed to do them justice - even if the second one melded an entire plot arc together. It was still very well done.
Personally, I was a Light supporter from the beginning. Did anyone else have a similar outlook, or were you all for L?
@Dylan_Disast3r@xanga - Anime is awesome, as are all cartoons. The Matrix was heavily inspired by Ghost in the Shell, and many action movies are heavily inspired by anime.
Some anime is really sick too... it can get really crazy. Anyway check it out before passing judgement!
Death Note is a great anime. I also highly recommend Cowboy Bebop. The latter is full of nonstop action, excellent music, and a dreamy badass named Spike Spiegel.
One of the best series ever.
Also good would be Outlaw Star and Trigun (which I'm rewatching as I'm typing this.)
@vashts6583@xanga - yes, Trigun was brilliant! The ending battle between Vash and Knives especially.
The LAM was actually quite a disappointment, but it is by far my favorite anime.
hmmm, this actually sounds pretty cool.
my friends are hella into it, and i always thought it was just weird, but i never knew what it was about.
I watched 3/4 of Deathnote but then it got really repetitive and I gave up. I recommend:
- Madlax
- Trigun
- Cowboy Bebop
- Hellsing
- GTO
all of these are really good!
@Dylan_Disast3r@xanga - So a Man is not allowed to enjoy anything besides Sports? Maybe Shark Week on discovery? or are pigeon holed into watching action shows or something? quite the ignorant comment.
guh. anime sucks. the Manga was really awesome and the movies were pretty good too though.
LOVE L <3
@mistermino@xanga - Hmm, from reading some of the things they've written here before; yes. They've made quite clear what their definition of a "man" is so them saying that a "man" watches anime is quite contradictory to what they normally say.
@Pcgecko85@xanga - Cowboy Bebop was the greatest anime I ever watched :D
@Dylan_Disast3r@xanga - haha alright man eventhough 1 Author doesn't speak for everyone. Kind of like how the past president(s) reflected all Americans in the US. Way to go there man.
Its a hecka good manga, anime, and film(s). But I thought that the second Death Note film was a bit confusing (although I'm kinda slow).
@xx_interminable@xanga - yeah i was for light all the way, personally, i think Near cheated and got too many lucky breaks
@mistermino@xanga - mhmmm thank you very much
The anime destroys the movie. I really didn't like the acting in the movie or the loss of atmosphere. I also felt the writing was laking more.
I've watched some of the anime when it was on TV, and really liked it. Did the trilogy come out before or after the anime? From the responses I'm assuming the movies are pretty good...
