  • PETA vs Obama: Is a fly an animal?

Dear PETA. No one asked for you to comment on Obama's killing the fly. If anything should be criticized, it should be the unreasonable amount of attention given to the President on a daily basis, to the point where his killing a fly becomes the top news story of the week.

    Suck it, PETA.

But seriously, PETA. You are bitching about Obama killing a fly, but not his taking a huge camera crew to Five Guys, a burger joint without a single vegetarian sandwich option, or his going to Ray's Hell Burger with Biden?

You're a lot like the boy who cried "Wolf," PETA. Keep whining about trivial things like this and no one will listen when you have real--forgive the pun--beef. This is almost as stupid as your protesting "The Passion of the Christ" for its reflection of societal indifference to the suffering of animals.

Is it just me or is PETA that dude at every party who interjects unwanted opinions into others' conversations? If PETA were a superhero it would be Aquaman, because no one gives a shit about either one of them.

    Good one, PETA!

PETA's logic seems to argue that a fly is an animal, Obama killed a fly, and therefore he has violated the Ethical Treatment of Animals to which these People devote themselves.

What do you guys think -am I wrong to think PETA is being unreasonable?  And what do you think: does a fly count as an animal?  Have you ever killed a fly before?

This is even more stupid then the news media replaying him killing a fly for the past three days.

    NO ONE CARES.

lol PETA has gotta be the funniest group of whiners. yes a fly is an animal. what kind of a retarded question is that? its an invertebrate with metabolic processes

  • ricopico@xanga

Funny how they have to pick out this particular fly swatting incident when they could've just made a home video of their own ages ago =.=
I guess they realised that no one would care if it was a home video, but the then again, thats the TRUTH. Nobody - correction, very few people give a damn about flies!! Thats why the gratuitous murder of flies everyday don't end up on the news!!!

@Secret_Qt@xanga - Organisms don't necessarily have to be mammals to be considered animals (if that was what you were getting at).

...In terms of taxonomy flies belong to Kingdom: Animalia so of course they are animals, what else would they be? bacteria? That being said, I think they are really being ridiculous about this entire thing.

@Lil_Firefly_25@xanga -  Ha so true. There are so many more important news topics to cover...

  • lil_azn_saphire@xanga

WTF PETA is such a buzz kill (get it flies....buzz yeahhh)

    but seriously, over reacting

  • ThePerksOfBeingABlogger@xanga
  • jesuismir@xanga

OMG!! Flies reproduce like CRAZY. If he killed a seal, it'd be different. but you can get 100+ flies from ONE fly!

  • CrisaRei@xanga

i'm sure PETA has stepped on a few ants and swatted at mosquitoes.

    Please, PETA, stop being whiny.
  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

Ugh.  PETA bitches over the dumbest shit.
No wonder no one takes them seriously.

  • Dargon@xanga

Is it unreasonable to disagree with PETA? Seriously? It is seldom reasonable to agree with them.

  • xo__crazybeautiful@xanga

you guys dont have to start saying rude things about a good organization. PETA is there to protect the rights of animals. yes it was far out about the fly issue. im a vegetarian and even i think that is pretty dumb. but dont start making PETA out to be a joke.
its a serious organization that shouldnt be made a joke of.

i wish Obama would come to aussie and kill all the flies up north *siiiigh*

  • noree_n@xanga

@ElementBAM130@xanga - lol.  did you not catch the subtle sarcasm?? :)

  • lolquack@xanga

XDDD peta needs to get off Obama's Nuts xD

  • nooitzben@xanga

PETA gives a bad rep for real people who really care about non human living creatures. Yes a fly is an animal.

So what if obama killed a fly? Tons of ppl do.

But for me usually if a fly is bothering me..I'd just capture it and release it outside..people are quick to use violence as a solution even for a such a tiny thing as a fly.

Peta shouldn't have been so critical..I never liked Peta.

I think obama should of just let the fly go. Would of been a nicer thing to do.

  • bodyheartmindsoul@xanga

i try not to kill bugs, in a way i get it. it feels weird to take a life. but, i do't think killing a bug is a big deal. i just don't (except mosquitoes...)

  • anonymous

    @NiDH0GG@xanga - good point. XD

  • anonymous

I could write an encyclopedia on how stupid, immoral, and just fucking ridiculous PETA is. But I won't. The South Park PETA episode really says it all. I suggest all PETA-haters watch it, even if you aren't a fan of South Park. It's well worth it.

  • Epic_Dood@xanga

there are over 120,000 different SPECIES of flies...SPECIES!!!

pretty sure obama, the president of the united states of america can freely kill 1 single specimen...the insignificance of the matter is just ridiculous

i would like to know what peta was doing while egypt slaughtered its entire pig population out of ignorance..

If they really gave a rats ass, you would think they would have tried to inform egypts political leaders or something:

egypt kills 300,000 swine Peta does nothing
obama swats a fucking fly and they flip shit OMG THAT POOR FLY!!  IT DIDNT EVEN LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO PRODUCE THOUSANDS OF MORE IN ITS 20 DAY LIFESPAN!!!!

  • The_World_Will_End@xanga

lol... PETA is too dramatic. I get the idea of animal cruelty - but this is just too much.
Who hasn't swatted a fly in their lives?

And according to evolutionary molecular data and phylogeny taxonomy, flies are under Phylum Arthropoda. This phylum houses lobsters, crabs, insects, etc. And to be specific, flies are Phylum Arthropoda, Class Hexapoda, Order Diptera. (ugh... just ended a summer biology class which made me memorize such things) ..... This phylum is considered animals. Even Phylum Platyhelminthes (flat worms) are considered animals.

So, PETA gots to care about stepping on any space on the ground what so ever. Who knows if they stepped on ants (on purpose or by accident)!? Yes, ants are animals too ;)

  • bonEtuh@xanga

the fly probably would've died that same day anyway. it might as well die from being slapped by obama.

  • thewindycity@xanga

im sure everyone agrees that PETA has and always will overreact to almost everything.
as for the "is a fly an animal?" question, I really don't see where that's leading because anyone with 8th grade education can classify a fly as an animal.

  • OldFashioned@xanga

flies are not animals, they are insects. insects do not fall in the animal category to me. mamals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mollusks, crustaceans, birds, people, those are animals. non animals are insects, plants, fungus, bacteria, viruses.

if all living things constitute as an animal, then i should condemn them for killing plants and indirectly killing people. they are killing off what is supplying the world oxygen by eating plants. and it's no secret that vegetarians give off a lot of methane because of their diet. their adding more greenhouse gases, so they're actually speeding up global warming and letting in harmful uv rays which is in turn giving eveyone cancer.

plus what's the life cycle of a fly? it'd be amiracle if it lived beyond a week anyway. plus they spread diseases and multiply like crazy. there's like a 100billion flies to human ratio anyway. one fly is not going to make a difference.

did i mention i hate flies? i also hate cockroaches and mosquitoes. cockroaches is the top of my hate list, next is mosquito then the fly. why? cockroaches live through radiation, are canibals, and can live up to 7 days decapitated, and will only die because it has no mouth to get food to keep it hydrated. they have ton of babies per sac they release, and they smell bad and spread disease. mosquitoes suck blood and spread malaria, dengue fever, typhoid fever, the west nile virus, h fever, to name a few of the known diseases they spread. sure the males dont bite, but they hella sound annoying. now the flies.. eeewww they spread magggots, and spit on things they land on then suck it up again. they taste with their feet and they have germs stick on their hairy body. they frequent things that are decaying or rotting then they land on your food, open cuts, and even poo.... then obama does the world a favor (i didnt vote for him though) and kills a pest, and peta get's mad?

    where are their priorities?
