  • Do I need a "real" hobby?

My girlfriend recently told me that I have no hobbies.

A cartoon dog on the Internet, not my girlfriend.

That's not true!  Here are some of my hobbies:
    • I participate on message board sites and blog communities (like Xanga).
    • I edit Wikipedia.
    • I read blogs about TV shows that I like.
Ugh she has a point... all my so-called hobbies are virtual.  I guess Xanga and Wikipedia don't cut it as "real" hobbies.  Everything physical I do is something I do with her or with friends:
    • Find new restaurants and check them out.
    • Go to plays and live events.
    • Go on walks around the city.
She told me point blank that I need a hobby...  something physical.  I think she would prefer it if I had a traditional man's hobby: hunting, fishing, bowling, or camping.  Actually even traditionally female hobbies would suit her: she mentioned gardening, but that's not going to happen (not because I think it's unmanly, but because I have zero interest in it).  I guess my leading contender for hobby is reading... but even that recently went digital (I got a Kindle).

My contention is that in this modern day and age, it's perfect OK for someone to have only virtual hobbies.  I do stuff in the "real world" (have coffee/drinks with friends, eat food, experience plays/live events), but always with someone else... so she says those don't count.  A "real" hobby has to be something you enjoy alone (I checked, and pr0n doesn't count).

Help us break the tie.  Does a man need to have physical hobbies?  Is it ok for someone to have all their hobbies on the Internet?

Well I can see both sides here. Doing all these things you do online sometimes does take dedication and motivation to do it. I mean, I've been meaning to edit some Wiki stuff for a while but I can never bring myself to do it or I just don't know how to approach it. So it's great that you're gifted at that. And it's great that you're interested in shows and stuff -- which makes you want to read further up on it online. A true fan for sure. But at the same time, maybe your girlfriend is just saying that there is a world outside your door and your computer -- you just need to stop once in a while and take it all in. I don't think it necessarily has to be physical per se, but it does involve walking outside, :P.

you should take up something dangerous (like sky diving)...

Based on that definition, it totally counts. Everything manly can be accessed online now. you're still a man, don't worry about it. video games, computers, cars, guns...

    @visualfusion@xanga

i'd LOVE to do that. i just wish i had 200-400 dollars to blow on sky diving...lessons, plane rides, and equipment rentals are not cheap.
now that i think about it, manly hobbies are really expensive...(maybe that's why girls obsess over boys, cuz its a low-cost hobby, but thats another topic for another day)

Cars and video games, everything a man needs.

Gardening is SO manly! I met a whole group of male gardeners when I worked at my local arboretum. And if you have a banging body, do it in the summer and she can watch you sweat

I think she just wants you to get out more.  You know, like get a tan or something.

why does it have to be alone? hunting, bowling, and camping are rarely solitary activities (i'll give it to fishing, tho).

i had the same dilemma a few days ago
i figured the only reason why im always bored and lazy is because i dont have a real hobby
its so sad, so very sad:(
is smoking weed on a daily basis considered a real hobby?

  • kyleberg29@xanga

Yeah I was told the same thing, so since your regular activities are similar to mine I would suggest picking up a hobby while you do your normal routine. Start a collection or something. Like collect all the ticket stubs from the plays and live shows and keep them in a notebook maybe with some pictures or something. Or even collecting like matchbooks or something from all the restaurants you go to.

Or even make ebay a hobby, yeah that is online but you would be going to garage and yard sales to look for shit to buy.

Or just keep doing what you are doing until YOU feel you need a hobby. Then do something about it.

it's fine I guess they dont want you that bored/ rely on them to be available O-o ?

  • y_tc@xanga

isn't it sitting in front of the computer and being online is a physical act itself? that's your hobby! If that doesn't count, then I guess playing video games can count as a hobby?

  • histrionica37@xanga

yes you do need to have a physical hobby! you sitting in your couch and blogging count as a mental hobby (really?). try to work out your muscles!

  • my_final_username@xanga

I dont really have any physical hobby,  the only things I have which may be classed as a hobby is postcard collecting.
