I think you should talk to them face to face. Don't believe that hype about risking your life. Most people aren't paranoid or crazy. Don't let a 1% possibility prevent you from doing the right thing. If you talk to them, you can be nice and neighborly and possibly even make friends.

In any case leaving an impersonal signed note might create tensions between you and them down the line as they are more likely to think that you are out to get them. And even an anonymous note will make them paranoid and antagonistic toward all their neighbors. Of course if you talk to them before leaving a note, any later note whether you sign it or not or even whether you are the one who posted it will be irrelevant as they'll suspect you in any case unless your conversation was such that they came to feel they could trust you.

Really people are just way too paranoid these days and not just the people who are on weed. If you want to move to create a world with less fear of one another altogether you have to start by taking the first step and be willing to talk to people.

I would probably do it during a time when they aren't smoking AS much as usual, like not when they are maximally stoned. I would parsel out enough time to have a real conversation with them not a like two second ultimatum. They might try to get rid of you as fast as possible and if that's the case fine you learn something about them, but otherwise I'd try to talk to them seriously as equals and gentlemen.

I would not approach it as if I were demanding that they stop smoking or else shove something under the door. Rather I would simply say that you can smell what smells like marijuana coming out of your apartment and that although you don't have any problem with weed in general your wife is pregnant and the smoke is making her uncomfortable. (don't suggest that the smoke is harmful for the baby! that will get you into an argument you probably don't want to get into) Then ask them if there's anything they can do to reduce the amount of smoke that escapes into the hallway and suggest as an option stuffing something under the door. You might even suggest that keeping more smoke inside might ultimately heighten their own experience. Also listen to their own suggestions.

If it continues or gets worse after that, then I would leave a note or talk to them again referencing the conversation you had earlier as a polite reminder.  And only if after that it continued would I leave a ever so slightly threatening note.

Of course a lot of this depends on your assessment of what kind of people they are. If they seem like a more dangerous lot then I would never threaten them in any way in order to avoid risking retaliation. Rather if they ignored my suggestions I would simply anonymously call the police. But I should hope it would never get to that.

Generally I'd give them at least three reasonable chances to change before I'd even consider tattling either to the landlord or to the police and that's only because 1. they might be rather forgetful if they are that frequently stoned and 2. blocking the smoke from getting out might be a harder task than it seems.  If they are nice people though I would try to work with them, offer suggestions and try to figure something out. I think they would appreciate that kind of consideration since it will be a thing that benefits them by making them more safe AND you by making it so you don't have to deal with the smoke. I think some sort of accord should be reachable.

I applaud you for not ratting out your neighbors.

As a cannabis connasseur, I'll tell you right now that cannabis isn't going to hurt your wife's baby.

And furthermore, unless you're the one inhaling the smoke or in the same room of a large smoke session, you're not getting high. 90% of THC is extracted by the lungs within 3 seconds of taking the hit.

But you should definitely let them know that the entire building smells like bud... that could attract unwanted attention. I can never tell if where I smoke smells like it because I'm well... high. You might mention it to them in the hallway or something, I think I would freak out if I just burned one down and someone came banging on my door.

smoking cannabis lowers the ability to smell cannabis.

Kind of like the way when you're eating really strong smelling chips, you can't tell that the smell takes up the whole room.

As a ex-stoner I would say just talk to them. They honestly dont care that you knocked on their door. They probably dont even notice that the smell is everywhere. Just ask, they will comply.

Oh yeah, im only an exstoner because I am pregnant. Haha. Damn being pregnant and breast feeding! Cant get my baby high! Cant smoke for like the next year, but whatever is best for the baby.

just knock on the door and ask them if they can smoke near a window or something cause your woman is knocked up if they are a dick about it tell them youll call the cops but idk if you asked me cause of a baby i would smoke out the window or near a vent

I'd say leave a  note. Maybe mention your wife and the baby? Knocking on the door would work too, but you said you felt a little uneasy about that option, so just play it safe with a note.

Just knock on the door but stand far back, or to the side a bit lol.

i'm sure they will be fine, i know a few people that do it everyday, well they are crazy but not gonna kill you kinda crazy lol..

Don't ever rat people out like that. You just don't do that. Especially if you have ethics at all. Pot does not cause cancer, doesn't hurt anybody at all in general. Yes it kills some brains cells, but so does the air we breath everyday.
 

The cops spend more time busting people who smoke pot then they do on meth and that is f*cking stupid. Seriously. Yes in most states pot is illegal, but that is because the government wants to make money off of it, and that  is why it is illegal because thats the only way they can think of making money off of it.

If you hear a gunshot from someones house you call the cops, if you see a bunch of tweakers in and out of a place that isn't theres, call the cops, you don't call the cops on someone who smokes pot, that is messed up. I dont care if they are breaking the law or not, it's not something you should do.

Would you call the cops on your on kid for staying out too late, or for finding a little nug of weed in their room? If you would then that is more messed up, but most wouldn't.

In some places you can get in big trouble for even having a pipe on you, and to add something to somones criminal record for the rest of their life when all they did was smoke a little bowl to relax, isn't justified in anyway what so ever.

MANY people would respond to a note or to a face to face chat. Most people care, and wouldn't mind hiding the smell because it bugged someone.

People have the stupidest misconceptions about people who smoke pot and it is so aggravating. Garunteed everyone knows at least 5 people who smoke pot.

I know a couple doctors, a lawyer and a few school teachers who smoke pot. Every walks of life partake in smoking because of how it makes them feel. There are probably more pot smokers now, then there ever has been, and the reason why, is because it is more and more socially acceptable, and they have taken back alot of the negative facts about pot they were originally created to scare people out of smoking the stuff. 

People get so wrapped up in what others think and in what others say. There is so many people out there that don't know the truth about pot because they just go with what one statstic says, or what happened to one person one time because of this or that. I mean honestly. The media puts so much negativity into things we do and don't do and it just scares the crap out of people so they just stay in there house and work 9-5 and do nothing with there lives all because of one person said so.

Think for yourselves people, and if your this mixed up on a little conversation on pot, then I have news for you, your mixed up on alot more than you think.

Leave a note saying that the smell of their recreational activity is bugging your pregnant wife, or talk to the in person. They probably wont mind at all. Most stoners are caring, and most are nice, so you will probably luck out. If you don't Im very sorry.
