  • Being Forced to watch Chick Flicks

My girlfriend was kind enough to watch Terminator Salvation and Star Trek with me recently.

It was awesome, and I loved her 5% more after each movie.

Then recently, she mentioned that we should see another movie... but the last two had been "boy movies" so that this time it was "her turn".

I froze in fear.  It was a very fair point.  But I realized - what if she chose a chick flick, like Sex and the City, The Movie (it's not in the theaters any more, but I was panicking and not thinking clearly).  I never would've taken her to those two movies, if I had realized that she'd ask for a chick flick in return.  T2 is one of her favorite movies, so I thought we had made that choice "together".

Thank god she took pity on me, and chose "UP" by Pixar.

For Up not being a chick flick, I loved her 5% more after the movie.

I like movies about relationships, like When Harry Met Sally, Forgetting Sarah Marshall,  or Knocked Up.  But an outright chick flick is painful to me.  I have watched many a chick flick in the theaters... all in the name of love.  But taking my girlfriend to see two action movies in a row... wow, that's just begging for trouble.  Let that be a lesson to us all... think ahead to the next movie when picking this one.

How about you: do you enjoy chick flicks?  How do you and your SO pick movies to watch together?

I'm a girl, & I don't even like chick flicks. My boyfriend & I tend to like the same kind of movies, anyway. The last movie we saw together was Gran Torino & we both loved it :)

an affair to remember 1934 ..cary grant and deborah kerr... lol old ones .. kinda like the acting... new chick flicks? need some good explosions, a rapid fire machine gun and a unstoppable monster and then its all right... sorta...

  • xjadersx@xanga

I'm happy my boyfriend doesn't base his love of me on the movies we go to haha. We usually like the same movies. I like comical romances, not sappy ones. But I did get him to watch the Notebook and he did not complain too much.

PS: Star Trek was amazing. ^_^ Zachary Quinto as Spock = so hot.

    @beforedawn@xanga - @steph@datingish - "good explosions, a rapid fire machine gun and a unstoppable monster..."yes. ^_^

I hate chick flicks, but unfortunately if there isn't a movie both me and my girlfriend can mutually agree on, we just end up having one choose and then switch the next time. Recently, she chose for us to see "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" Oh god, I can honestly say that was the worst movie I had ever seen.

The last three movies my boyfriend and I saw were: Fast and the Furious, X-men Origins and Star Trek... (we both saw Terminator but with other friends)... I think we've only ever really watched action movies together but I like them.

I DO like "chick flicks" but we've just never seen one together... I kinda like watching them on my own or with other girl friends.... they're like a guilty pleasure :P

I've never had to sit through one, at least not with the current girlfriend. She's pretty good at picking out movies that turn out to be good, except I tend to ridicule her choices at first and then end up having to eat my words because I like the movie. She has good taste.

The last chick flick I saw in theaters was The Notebook and that's because I got tricked into going by a bunch of female friends who said it was a "historical film set in the 1940's." Apparently the fact that everyone who was going was female wasn't enough for me to see what was happening. I will admit I got owned.

my boyfriend owns more 'chick flicks' than i do.

When he tried to make me watch 'Love Actually',  I foiled him into sex. I can happily say i'm never even going to look at that movie

The boyfriend & I just pick something we would both like to see. For my Valentine's Day present this year he took me to see Friday the 13th. :)

@beforedawn@xanga - An Affair to Remember is my favorite chick flick ever.  And I LOVE Cary Grant.

I went to all those movies willingly with my boyfriend recently. :)  Star Trek was amazing (saw it twice so far and would like to see a few more times, at minimum!), and so was Up (in different ways).  T4 was absolutely terrible; I can see why critics gave it a 30% Fresh.  We also saw Angels & Demons because he really loved the book, and that movie was so-so.

I can't STAND chick flicks, though.  I probably hate them more than my boyfriend does.  They're such a waste of time, effort and money all around.  I have no idea how anyone can enjoy them.

  • beforedawn@xanga

@flowerspushthrudirt@xanga - lol if i ever had a choice for a man buddy, cary would rank right up there...

  • coolmonkey@xanga
You are under no obligation for movie quid pro quo. If she agrred to watch those movies with you with a sound mind, then that was her decision. She had every opportunity and right to refuse or negotiate before watching.

What happened to men? Didn't we used to have the ability to say "no?"
  • Murphy_Rants@xanga

I would never force a male to watch a chick flick...never...I don't think I would even watch them...I did like Confessions of a Shopaholic...but again, would NEVER force a male to it...wouldn't even suggest it.

If someone wanted to go see Star Trek or Terminator with me...I'd be all, "Fuck yeah!" Terminator 2 was one of the first movies I remember watching as a kid. It then became a ritual to watch it with my dad. Then The 5th Element was our movie to watch obessively, hahaha.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

Chick flicks are for when I'm alone at home. I think I'd be embarrassed to watch them with my SO.

  • jolee121910@xanga

yo UP was an amaaazing movie

  • a_single_raindrop@xanga

I've decided that chick flicks are kind of pointless to watch at a movie theater. And I usually regret it afterwards because the tickets are so expensive. So I let my boyfriend choose the movie (unless there's something I really want to watch).

I do remember being angry with my boyfriend after he took me to watch Pineapple Express. I thought it was stupid, while he really enjoyed it.

Hmm, UP was awesome. We watched 17 Again with Zac Effron, and he liked it haha. The last chick flick I watched was Confessions of a Shopaholic and it was bad.

i always made my recent ex watch chick flicks with me, he would always say no, i know deep down inside he likes it, he even laughs sometime.  though one time, i had to pay up when i took him to see a chick flick with me, but it was definitely only good times.

  • emilyd_foster@xanga

Does your girlfriend not have girlfriends to go see chick flicks with?  I am nice and don't see those kind of movies with my boyfriend because he won't enjoy it and me knowing that won't make me enjoy the movie at all.  Plus the fact that I very rarely like chick flicks myself.  Haha  I like more mens movies I guess.
