  • Nickelodeon Shows You Probably Forgot About, But I Didn't

As some who spent a majority of their childhood in the 1990s, I amassed a great deal of knowledge about 90s Nickelodeon as seen HERE and HERE. The gilded age of Stick Stickly and every couch was draped with orange. Life was a good. But a number of television shows fell through the cracks and even during the bouts of nostalgia every 90s kid feels about the Nickelodeon of their youth often go unmentioned. It is my hope that in reading this article you will exclaim, "OH YEA! I Remember That!" several times.

Here are the top 5 of those shows:

    5) The Journey of Allen Strange

Typical "girl meets alien, alien comes to live with girl's family, there's an awkward romantic tension between alien and girl, alien tries to go back home" story. This show joined Snick towards the end of my Nickelodeon watching days. I still remember it, though. In fact, every so often I'll catch an old rerun of Malcolm in the Middle and go "Hey! Look! It's Allen Strange!" I don't remember much from the actual show other than he could read books fast by touching them.

    4) Cousin Skeeter

This show had a puppet. But he wasn't just any puppet. He was a puppet who no one ever recognized as a puppet. You probably don't remember this show because it wasn't very good. I don't really have any positive memories about Cousin Skeeter. Except, maybe, for that time MC Lyte was on. I remember that episode for some reason. In any case I think the theme song and opening sequence tells you all you need to know about the show:

    3) Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

The one animated section on this list and also the one most likely to be remembered.  It was certainly beloved (I know I always liked it), but I still believe that most people end up leaving this one out when remembering their favorite 90s Nickelodeon shows.

It was a surreal little show that followed the adventures of 3 monsters: Oblina, Ickus, and Krum. With Oblina sounding like Chuckie Finster and Ickus sounding straight out of Cow and Chicken. Solid show all around if for nothing else than its everyday absurdity and wackiness.

    2) Roundhouse

Nickelodeon's answer to In Living Color (which I also loved as a child, Homey don't play dat!) and precursor to All That. This show seems to be one of the few Nickelodeon shows that people are genuinely divided on. You have people like me who LOVED it and then you have the ungrateful group of people that hated it. Shows on Nickelodeon are generally either universally loved (Aaah! Real Monsters) or universally rather disliked - hated (Cousin Skeeter). I loved Roundhouse so deal with it. In fact I probably would have preferred that it carry on a few years more to All That being created. That's right, I said it.

    1) My Brother and Me

This show did not last very long, but it certainly made an impact. It was only on for one season but I'll never forget Kendall Gill showing up, Goo Punch!, Alfie not wanting to wear tights in the school play, and Alfie's flat top. Every episode was a classic. Shame they killed it off.

Do you remember any of these shows?
