hot girl attractive female, there are a slew of comments like this: "I have a total girl crush on her!"
To unravel this mystery, we chose not to actually ask any women... but instead, turned to

I can't help but notice that a lot of girl crushes mentioned by commenters are on women that most men aren't attracted to (e.g. Sarah Jessica Parker).
Why is that... how exactly do these girl crushes work?
Men of mancouch: how we can use girl crushes to our advantage? And girls, please explain... what is a girl crush, and what is the point of them?

a girl crush, as urbandictionary states, has to do with euphoria, inspiration.. etc. basically what that means is that a girl respects another girl (for her personality and what have you) and aspires to be like her.

@mancouch - think about how people talk about celebrities. like when a girl talks about.. angelina jolie, for example. you must've heard a girl say "even I'D do her" at some point.
never experienced it personally - but - i think it makes sense that if a girl finds so much to like and respect about another girl, she begins to idolize her and the line between liking someone platonically and liking someone romantically gradually begins to blur.
Sarah Jessica Parker has a manly face, so maybe some women mistake her for being a man. I always thought a girl crush was the equivalent to a man crush, whatever that is.

i read in a big ol' article of some fancy newspaper - the name of which i don't recall - that women are much more easily aroused than men, they just don't, uh... realize it... and (hetero) women can be sexually attracted to a woman alone, woman with woman, woman with man... whereas (hetero) man is only attracted to man with woman. i guess my point is that we may be attracted out of admiration, maybe even envy, but we may also be physically attracted, even if we are heterosexual. (i'm sure any girl you ask will deny being sexually aroused by another girl). anywho... i've never used the term girl crush, but i do admit to admiring a woman's many glorious qualities ;)
@sameasalways123@xanga - That's about right. Girl crushes are really about being attracted to how that specific girl presents herself or tackles the world. It's very much about personality, image, and confidence; and essentially wanting to emulate that person. It usually isn't about sexual attractiveness.
I personally think SJP is over-rated and looks old.
My girl crush, though, is definitely at the moment India.Arie. I love how inspirational she is, how independent and totally confident she is, and her style; which all corresponds with the definition. I'd love to be as sure of myself as she is.

Girl crushes are slightly awkward. It's a cross between wanting to BE that girl and thinking she is so goddamn pretty I'd do her. I had a girlcrush on this girl in my dance class; her back was just so toned and gorgeous. It got to the point where I blushed whenever she talked to me!!

To me, a girl crush is someone I admire who is also sexually attractive. That doesn't mean I get aroused when I look at her...more like I want to immitate her. I want to be hot and awesome like her.
I saw a show not too long ago in which there was this actress who completely filled the stage with her presence. She was sexy and captivating. I want to be like that as a performer. I have a woman crush on her.

Maybe its me but its there are two different things... crushes and lust (that man hes hot id like some of that) feeling and the crush (butterflies in your tummy, think about them all the time, giddy when you talk feeling). In my opinion "girl crush" is just a trendy way of expressing that you respect/ admire or like someone, or you are curious about then.

although some girl crushes are simply admiring certain qualities in other woman (whether it be friends or celebrities), many girl crushes are actually an obsessive attraction to the point where you want to be her because you are so envious of that girl.
