Rant Against The White Crew Neck T-shirt
Gentlemen, it is time to purge our closets of the ubiquitous white crew neck t-shirt at work. I see it day in and day out: men in the workplace with their open collars, one or two buttons undone, with their white crew neck t-shirt under it. Stop and take a look around the office for a second. Look at all the white crew neck t-shirts forming that oddly shaped upside-down triangle under a man’s Adams-apple; they’re everywhere. Here’s a question for the 21st century: WHY!?
My suspicion is that most men have no idea they are doing it. At the very least it has become a habit: take shower, towel off, don white crew neck t-shirt, finish getting dressed. Is anyone really thinking “this white crew neck will look great under my Brooks Bros. No-Iron shirt!” or “this white crew neck tee will be the perfect complement to my Ralph Lauren polo!” Really? Then why aren’t any of the models in the Brooks Bros. catalogue or the Ralph Lauren ads donning the same white crew neck under open collar look?Where did we learn this fashion no-no? Or rather, where did we adopt it?
Back in the 1950’s (half way through the last decade if I must remind you) men wore the white crew neck under their open collars when it was casual enough to do so, but they would never be caught in the office wearing a dress shirt without a properly tied tie.In the next two decades, the white crew neck was absent from the workplace. I remember wearing them to bed when I was a boy, but I never wore them to school in the 70’s, especially with an open collar.
In the early 80’s the white crew neck tee was still regarded as underwear, never to be seen in public; after all, our outfits were far too fashion forward to be marred by the unsightly view of one’s undergarments.
My greatest fear is that the era of Grunge music may have given us permission to don our underwear in public, and while society as, I have to believe, as become more sophisticated, we’ve all forgotten to dump the white crew neck tee as every day wear, to leave it for wearing at bed if nothing else.
It is time to go to your closet and your bureaus and purge them of the white crew neck t-shirt (that is, unless you are one who truly only wears them as bed clothes or you work at Best Buy).
Maybe we learned this fashion faux pas from retail employees. Throughout the 90’s you could walk into any store that sold men’s casual wear and find employees sporting that look: open fancy flannel collar with white crew neck underneath. We’ve entered a new era, it’s time to let go of the white crew neck. We can do better.
Purge your closets of the white crew neck t-shirt.
Why?
First and foremost the look is infinitely more modern! Let’s get with the 21st century .Secondly, nobody wants to see your underwear, least of all your dingy, ill-fitting, white crew neck t-shirt under the open collar of your pressed (hopefully) dress shirt, polo shirt or casual short-sleeve shirt. I don't really care if it is clean or brand new. Look at your peers. Take a look at those who are wearing the white crew neck and those who are not. The guys without the crew neck actually look more professional and clean. The guys with the crew neck look infinitely more casual and not as polished.
You won't see much of the “open collar with the white crew neck” look in movies, TV, or popular culture. Look at your idols and heroes, even your boss; they're probably not wearing a white crew neck under their open collar, unless you work at The Gap.
There is nothing wrong with an open collar showing a bit of skin or even some hair.
What!?I hear some of you calling out that you don’t want to look like some stereotype … nobody said anything about not keeping your chest hair trimmed in line with your collarbones or investing in gold chains. This is about education and there is no room for your humor or objections.
For those that are ready, ditch the crew neck now. Good man!“But what about my clothes? My t-shirts protect the pits on my dress shirts from turning yellow” I hear some of you decrying. Dump the antiperspirant. The aluminum contained in antiperspirants is the cause of those yellow arm pit stains. (Never mind the studies suggesting aluminum can lead to the development of Alzheimer’s) If you shower daily, even just a quick 5 minute shower, most guys should be able to get by without any antiperspirant, and if you really need to swipe something under your arm, switch to a natural deodorant, like Tom’s of Maine, to help control odor.
For those who aren't quite ready, make the switch to v-neck t-shirts, keep the chest hair level with your collarbones and maybe you’ll eventually learn to release the t-shirt as day wear.
Women and children have a hundred more choices when it comes to clothes. The proof is in the fact that female models get paid $100,000 a day to show off the myriad of clothes available to women while male models get back $2,000 a day to show off the same shirts and pants available to men time and time again. Men have fewer choices, add to that the most unflattering undergarment as daywear, the white crew neck, and it's almost like we are taking another unnecessary step backwards.
The time is now to release the white crew neck. Save it for bed clothes, or better yet, stop buying dust rags and rip those all-cotton crew necks into rags for dusting; after all, they do a better job of cleaning than they do of complementing your look.Do you consider a white crew neck t-shirt underwear or something wearable in public? How often do you see guys wearing a white T under their shirts or polo?

whatttt!!!! I love my white t's v-neck. Its an all purpose wear.
Don't take it away from meeeee.
T-shirt
I understand what you mean. I get annoyed when I see a guy wearing just jeans and a
white crew or a white A shirt. Those clearly should be undergarments
only. It makes you look like you just got out of bed put on some jeans and said "I'm dressed, lets go."
I find the exception comes when a white or black crew or muscle shirt (not an A shirt or hanes undershirt w/ all the lines thos eare and always will be undergarments) is paired with a dress button up or poker shirt (Provided that the shirt is unwrinkled). While you find it not classy I find that it takes what could be a formal look and makes it more
casual. Many times doing this also leads to pairing that said shirts with a
nice set of jeans or Khakis (To be considered nice these pants must not be cargo,
carpenter, stone washed or ripped but a straight/boot fit and preferably
designer quality). This style is at times suggested by many people who sell shirts and suits saying that with a nice undershirt
and/or nice jeans/khakis you can take a formal dress and create a dress casual
style.
If you don't have nice jeans/khakis (at which point I determine that you don't know how to dress and probably frequent only your job at Mcdonalds and the local bar) But if you are in that boat you could pair them with corduroy (yes I said it, don't hate on the corduroy it can at times look nice if done right and ladies love the feel of cordury and you can see where that leads).
I usually go with a white or black sleeveless muscle shirt but on occasion I will use the crew cut BUT I
wear them under a button up, never by itself. And as mentioned i will pait them with khakis nice jeans or even my nice pair of baise corduroys. I like this kind of dress casual look and out of most of my friends I'm considered to be one with decent fasion sense and always looking quite good dress wise.
As for your mention of Polo shirts. I'm opposed to polo shirts uless you are out golfing or if it is part of your workplace outfit. Polo shirts are just an attempt to create classy t-shirts, which is like the idea of a gourmet hot dog (don't lie to yourself there is no such thing they just want to chasrge you more for something that is hypoed up but actually worse than the traditional). So, polos with an undershirt are even worse. Polo shirts in just about any case should not be worn with an undershirt due to the fact that they are already casual, it gets too
warm on its own. Though if you have the polo for work and plan to
change before going out right from work wear the undershirt and change
the top shirt in the car I can make an exception for that.
Well thats my reply rant, thank you and good afternoon.
i think it's pretty sexy..especially for buff & cut guys ;]
i wear guy's white v-necks too :Di buy them in a pack at Walmart & then shrink them so it would fit me :D & i feel pretty confident in it than fancy girly clothes :DI absolutely hate it when guys wear a white button down shirt without a undershirt. Everything just looks so fleshy and gross. But I guess, most of the time when guys wear white button downs, they have a tie or something on with it...
Lol. I'm just glad I take most of the Mancouch posts as jokes. I just can't believe the length of this humorous post. A for effort. A for execution.
Does it really matter that much?!
Besides... I think it looks good... I could devote a few more minutes to this to sound convincing, but this is one of the most pointless arguments I've ever come across. You don't like the shirts? Then don't wear them! Let everyone see your nasty ole chest. (I, personally, find that more icky than a white shirt...) Really though? No one actually cares, icky chest or white t-shirt.
v-necks are a good idea.
some guys really cant go without another layer to soak up the sweat...and i hope no one decides to stop wearing deodorant because of this...i've known a few who abstained, and shouldn't have.
I think men should wear them as undergarments just because they're small and tight. They look best underneith...
Are you kidding? Men who don't wear deodorant carry the worst, most disgusting smell that makes everyone want to stand 6 feet away from them.
It IS a good thing that I take Mancouch strictly as a joke because than I would think the people behind these blogs are absolute morons.
What a ridiculous rant. It isn't a big deal if people decide to wear crew necks. Some guys can wear only a white tee shirt and still look hot ! Not everyone is going to stand there, staring at their closet going "how can i refrain from wearing my crew neck today ?"
If you don't like it, don't wear it. There's no need for such an incredibly long rant !
Does anyone really care?
I personally don't leave my house in pressed khakis with a tucked-in pressed collared shirt and a tie on a daily basis, primarily because as a college student there's no need for me to dress like that. If I had a job that required me to dress in business or business-casual clothes, that's one thing, but I like being comfortable in my clothes.
..Why do you know the history of white crew neck t-shirts?
They're cheap, sometimes they last if you don't use bleach and they're comfortable. I've been called white trash before so it's nothing new to me. Maybe it would be simpler if everyone adopts the Brave New World style of dress?
I would so much rather see a guy wearing a white tshirt than see his chest hair. Ew.
i'm that guy
whoa..this is long.
@KevtheMoron@xanga - ewww. that would suck. that book is....idk, but i didn't like it.
yeah because everyone wants to bring back the circa 70s look of an open button-down with chest hair sticking out. count me out. ill wear my white crew neck underneath.
yeah, because everyone loves those fleshy earth tones peeking out from the shoulders when you wear a dress shirt with no undershirt. classy.
yeah.. another mancouch crash and burn.
Youre just a perv who has a weird unhealthy fetish for collar bones and clavicles or something. Jesus this was lame.. and women should stop wearing underwear alltogether because pantyliens are hideous and also stop wering bras and just duct tape thier nipples and breasts into place. Bra straps being seen under clothes is SOOOO 1950's
Actually, my boyfriend looks pretty good in his.
white t's keep my nipples from showing
