  • Injuries: Show Me Your Worst

I had a nice long injury-free streak going until last night when I dislocated my elbow playing softball.  I had never broken/dislocated anything before, so I was pretty surprised when I was staring at my bone poking out of my skin and didn't think it was that bad.  From all I hear about broken bones and dislocations I thought it would hurt a hell of a lot more than it actually did.  The fact that I almost passed out walking to the ambulance was attributed to blood rushing out of my head to the location of the injury.  At least that's what the EMT told me - though she may have just been trying to be nice.

I thought I did pretty well though considering the X-ray looked something like this:

What's the worst injury you ever had?  Was it as painful as you thought it would be?  How long were you out of commission?

Probably getting my upper lip ripped in half by a pitbull.

Worst injury I've had, was a ripped tendant in the palm of my hand to my thumb. It hurt, quite a bit. A rather burning sensation, and the feeling of my skin stretching to its utmost extreme. It ended up bruising darker than a plum and stayed like that for 2 weeks. I'm right handed, and it was my right hand. Ha. I could barely dress myself, let alone wipe my ass.

I've accidently cut myself with sharp knvies while attempting to slice food items as a teenager...

My bloodest probably was during an internship I had one summer when I was helping the office file away forms. I guess either I was doing it too quickly, or not paying enough attention because I sliced my hand open on the metal prong of the folder I was stuffing and bled all over everything. My pants, shirt, the folder, the floor, my desk...I had to get stitches.

I rolled, fell and flew almost 500 feet down a mountain. I bruised every bone in my body. Cracked sternum, broken ankle, arm, collar bone and my tail bone. I ached and hurt for months. This is nothing compared to what I'm going through now though. I spent almost 10 months in hospital recently because of 2 different infections in my heart. I was put into a coma, woke up partially paralyzed, had to have a hip replaced and a knee. Severe ligament contracture and the arthritis that set in while I was in the coma have disabled me. It takes almost a minute for me to get up from the couch and walk to my kitchen 15 feet away. I use to work construction as a cement finisher. I've built concrete silo's, towers, all sorts of structures over 200 feet high. I could climb up a silo 100' tall in around 30 seconds. Just like a little squirrel running up a tree. Being in a hospital, on life support for a prolonged period of time can hurt you. Sometimes I wish the doctors wouldn't have revived me. If I had no family, no friends that I cared about, I would have told them to pull the plug. Somedays I almost feel like getting the wheelchair out of the closet and giving up.

Broke my femur bone almost in half...can't remember how much it hurt, as it was a looooong time ago.

Shattered six bones in my left foot while sledding.
Then I had to walk on the foot to my house which was about 1/4 of a mile away.  Painful as fuck.
I was on crutches for like 2-3 months.

Stiches on my leg from mountain climbing. Luckily it didn't leave a scar.

This is funnny. I had an inflamed muscle that was pinching my sciatic nerve. Translation. I hurt my butt from cheerleading. I fell on my butt. Haha

Ha! last week - I was putting away dishes and got frustrated, I had one baking dish inside the other, and the bottom one busted, flipped up and cut my wrist, I grabbed on and held it for a good 10 minutes before looking at the damage - I was really worried, because I didnt feel my hand, nor did I feel the glass cut me....Luckily, after 10 minutes of preassure, I let go to look and it was just horribly embarrasing that I was as freaked out as I was - Im a girl, I didnt cry, I didnt whine, NOTHING. Just, freaked out a bit - afterall, it was my WRIST.  There was more blood than the cut itself was worth IMHO.

i broke a beer glass in my hand at a bar and it sliced my wrist open, severing a tendon and a vein and getting blood all over my watch.  it didn't hurt, but i was pretty pissed about my watch!! they called an ambulance and the a-hole paramedic cleaned it with a freakin' alcohol pad, that actually hurt like hell.  of course having my eyebrow ripped off after falling into the corner of a picnic table hurt pretty bad too...

I was five when I had to get a bunch of stitches on my left calf cuz a shard of glass scraped it & just basically cut it open. I still remember, there was a bigass hole there & I had to be rushed to the hospital.

torn acl, shattered patella, 180 degree twisted ankle.

7 years later, only a 3 in long scar and not even a hint of a limp.

    damn proud, damn lucky.
