This is pretty much what the title implies. It's a list of the top 5 reasons why zebras are weird. So, I guess it's
exactly what the title implies. In fact, the title isn't so much implying as straight up telling you what's coming. In an event, this is why zebras are weird:
5) They're Called ZebrasCome on, people. I think it's long past time we all admit it's a crazy name. Look, it's okay to admit that one weekend while naming all the things on the planet humanity went out on a crazy bender and game up with Zebra, Hippopotamus, and Giraffe. It's cool. No reason to lose face. God did the same thing when he invented the platypus.
But Zebra is a crazier name than most. Mostly because it starts with "z." Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with "z," it's a perfectly fine letter. Some of my best friends spell their names with a "z." That doesn't mean that starting off a word with a "z" isn't a weird thing. When asked to come up with words that start with "z," most people will inevitably say "zebra" and give up. It's the xylophone of the z-world.
4) What's Up With The Stripes?Ok, so we all know zebras have stripes. They're quite spiffy. But why the hell do zebras have stripes? What is the evolutionary reasoning for that one? Have you seen a zebra? Always in the plains, aren't they? Those stripes aren't hiding them from shit. Maybe that's why every time I turn on
animal planet and its not animal cops or rhinos doing the dirty, I see a bunch of lions eating a Zebra. It's like, "Hey, buddy, that's a nice Tux, but that's not gonna do much for camouflage in
Afghanistan."
3) They're Like Horses, But NotThe zebra's closest relative is the horse. This is rather obvious if you've ever seen a zebra. They look like striped horses with mohawks. This is all fine and good. But the weird part is for looking exactly like horses, could you ever imagine a zebra with a saddle? I can't. Just try to think about riding a zebra. Get past the awesomeness for a second; isn't it a weird thought? I can barely think about horses without picturing some one riding them. But for a zebra that looks exactly the same, the thought just seems awkward.
2) What Sound Does a Zebra Make? You don't know, do you? Neither do I.
1) Fruit Stripe Gum Do you remember
Fruit Stripe Gum? I sure as hell do. I always called it zebra gum. Hell, I still do. Once upon a time, in college, I bought a whole bunch of Fruit Stripe Gum. Several packs of it. I kept the packs in my desk drawer. Whenever some one would come over I would ask if they would like some zebra gum. They never remembered it at first and would stare at me quizzically as I would reach for the draw. As I handed them a piece they would freak out with the joy of nostalgia for the gum on a level similar to what I suppose I would expect if I handed them a piece of the
Aggro Crag. I guess, my point is that I miss Fruit Stripe Gum. Also, a zebra is a really weird mascot for your gum product. But then again, zebras are just weird in general.
What do you think of Zebras, do you find them weird?

Oh man, I love the smell of the fruit stripe gum. mmmm
holy crap ahaha fruit stripes gum whatever happen to it!
Fruit stripe gum used to last like 10 seconds--but the tattoos were awesome!
NO. That gum was amazing. Well, the tattoos were, anyway.
nice reference to the aggro crag
I love fruit stripe gum.
Im sure everyone calls it zebra gum. lol
Zebra: black horse with white stripes... or white horse with black stripes?
Someone down the street had a zebra. I think the state took it away.
awe i rememer fruit stripe gum! X)
Zebras make really high pitched, almost whooping calls.
Just so everyone knows (:
Hahaha, zebras are so weird. There's a house around my area with a statue of a zebra in the yard. That gum was great (for about 10 seconds)- is it still around?
Zebras have an extinct relative, the quagga. (Another weird word.) It was brown-striped and its stripes faded as they progressed from head to tail. Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quagga
5) - maybe they're called zebras for precisely that reason! linguists wanted to give kids a memorable concept to associate the letter Z with, so they went with an endearing pseudo-horse and called it a Zebra. =)
@ 4) - well, every society has its nonconformists. sheesh.
@ 3) - or maybe horses are like zebras, but not. no one ever gives the zebra any credit.
@ 2) - au contraire... thanks to the enlightening gateway to knowledge known as yahooanswers!, the world need no longer wonder: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071224144140AARPrQo
@ 1) - fruit stripe gum is the only gum in the world i ever even remotely liked. *nostalgic sigh*
I love how everyone's commenting on the gum lmao.
I think Zebras are cool
But yes, they are the odd balls of the circle of life
I know what sounds a zebra makes. And the stripes are practical--it breaks up the outline of individual animals within the herd. Plus, people wouldn't ride zebras because they are wild animals, plus they're not really built like horses are ((really look at a racehorse and a zebra, tell me there aren't significant differences)).
Now, my little know-it-all-ness is over, this made me smile :)
i know what sound a zebra makes =[
Have you ever seen a herd of zebras? When you get a whole bunch together, their stripes make it pretty impossible to tell where one animal ends and the next begins. They look like one huge zebra blob, which is very hard for predators to target. Additionally, lions are colorblind --doesn't matter what color the zebras are, as long as the pattern camouflages. There are a bunch of other theories as well as to the evolutionary advantage of stripes.
Alas, I never had fruit stripe gum. I feel very deprived now.
i love this!
zebras are my favourite animal.
im actually wearing a shirt with a zebra on it atm .
No joke .
they may be weird, but its their weirdness that fascinates me.
it's what makes them interesting and different from other animals within their " kingdom " .. haha (:
LOL aw.
number 3 reminds me of that movie where that zebra wanted to be like the other horses and race with the other horses.
cant remember its name. but yahh. that movie lol
awww poor zebras :(
I remember a joke about zebra.
Why rabbit cannot date zebra?
Ans: Coz Mother Rabbit said those with tattoo were bad.
Zebras have stripes to protect them better from air attacks in the pacific, just like PT boats
its first grade science people.
you're absolutely right. i have NO idea what sounds zebra makes LOL
the stripes are for them to hypnotize the lions/tigers so that the predators will get confused about which zebra is which and get too frustrated because they cannot single out an individual zebra and the tastiest ones are usually protected in the middle of the herd; naturally they are the fast galloping zebras with sirloin muscular zebra legs to chew on. therefore, they are left with the less than appealing/slow galloping zebra to feast upon. so they'd probably save the hassle and just chase after those plain looking modest deers, instead of those weird&evil a-hole zebras, who use black and white optical illusions
@black_lie@xanga - How's that? And why do you know?! O.O
